Lions Release Jonathan Wade

To make room on the roster for kicker Dave Rayner, the Lions have released cornerback Jonathan Wade, according to Tom Kowalski.

Wade was signed in the offseason to be one of the Lions' new starters at cornerback. He and Chris Houston were slotted as the new starters and gave Lions fans hope that the secondary would be much improved this season. Well, the secondary has improved quite a bit, but not because of Wade. The move to trade for Alphonso Smith right before the start of the season was much more important to the secondary improving than signing Wade back during free agency. Smith quickly took Wade's starting job and the Lions haven't looked back.

Although Wade has the physical abilities, as Kowalski points out, he lost confidence after a rough start to the season. That opened up an opportunity for Smith and Wade just dropped down the depth chart. Now he is off the team altogether, as the Lions obviously feel comfortable with the corners they still have.

Sad in a way. He seemed to have some promise.

We could still use some CB depth. Vasher did not show me much of anything on Sunday.

Vasher has played well.

Im not a huge fan of his but he has played well enough to stay on the team.

by BennieBladesFan on Nov 9, 2010 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

really?

I think Vasher and Wade have played at about the same level. It seems I see Vasher in chase mode a lot

At least you SEE Vasher

Wade is the invisible man

You see Wade...

but he just had no clue how to cover a receiver and track the ball. It was ridiculous seeing him run in stride with his guy and be staring him down just to watch him catch the ball and make no attempt to defend the pass. His best moment was deflecting that pass near the sideline for Santana Moss. I liked Wade, but it takes more than personality and attitude to get on a football field.

Vasher did get on the field Sunday

Cornerback Chris Houston dislocated his left shoulder but had it popped into place. Houston, who said he suffered the same injury two years ago in Atlanta, said he expects to play Sunday at Buffalo.

Hmmm....

Makes me wonder if the Lions put a waiver in on Harris.

by CLF on Nov 9, 2010 3:15 PM EST reply actions

I

wouldnt be opposed to bringing Al Harris in he has a couple good years left in him. it would allow us to be able to draft a corner later in the draft next year

by hate2lovelions on Nov 9, 2010 3:17 PM EST up reply actions

Hope not.

Id rather have Pratt then a broken down 35 yr old vet thats coming off surgery.

by BennieBladesFan on Nov 9, 2010 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

ya, it's not like...

Harris & Woodson & shut us down twice a year, every year, or as if they could use someone out there in the DB that doesn’t allow 50+ yrd plays every game.

by LTownDown on Nov 9, 2010 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

Harris was one of the top CBs in the league just a few short years ago. He’s worth a flier, if only for nickel packages.

+1

While I like Al Harris….I think Pratt has more upside. Harris is on the decline and coming off major knee surgery. Granted the surgery was a year ago….but the Packers had to see something that made them release a player that was at one time considered one of their best players.

by BBlades on Nov 9, 2010 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

Is there any news on Houston?

If Houston can’t go whos gonna get the starting role on next Sunday?….And Yes I wouldn’t mind seeing Harris back there either

by DetroitDub on Nov 9, 2010 3:22 PM EST reply actions

I think he's going to be fine

He dislocated his shoulder but had it popped back in and came back.

Did he finish the game?

He came back for a few plays, but I thought he finished the game on the sideline with an ice pack on his shoulder.

by SLH on Nov 9, 2010 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah... I don't think he finished.

He went out, then came back in, but ultimately ended up with the shoulder pads off and ice pack on. Hopefully, he’s good to go on Sunday.

Ok so shoot me I don't care

Giants waived Sinorice Moss sign him..Cause I like the guy and he’s not bryant johnson lol

Sorry...

I know people hate BJ, but he is a better option than Moss. BJ’s worst season is equivalent to Moss’ career.

Mayhew

Someone mentioned on a another site that the Wade signing is Mayhew’s first bad move of the year. I think though that it was a 50/50 shot and Mayhew only signed him a 1 year. Millen would have given him a 3 year deal at top rate. It just another proof how much better Mayhew is.

by LionfaninPA on Nov 9, 2010 4:32 PM EST reply actions

Wade was not a bad pickup.

Smith was unproven, Wade projected to be better.

by Mavyrk on Nov 9, 2010 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

we needed bodies he filled a role. That role isn’t as important. he’ll prolly come back after/if hanson gets healthy.

I have a 9" personality

by Waitingfortheroar on Nov 9, 2010 4:52 PM EST up reply actions

Agree

Remember Wade was signed first to be a starter and then Mayhew traded for Smith at the end of preseason. The issue with Wade was/ is whether he could step up and become a solid starter. He was a nickel back for the Rams. Hopefully Macdonald, Vasher or Williams can fill that spot now.

by LionfaninPA on Nov 9, 2010 4:47 PM EST reply actions

Did we sign Wade or trade a late pick for him?

I can’t even remember anymore. Either way, this is one of the few heralded Mayhew moves that hasn’t paid off. It was bound to happen sooner or later.

by WestsideLionsFan on Nov 9, 2010 4:48 PM EST reply actions

signed

if memory serves….we signed Wade as a free agent

by BBlades on Nov 9, 2010 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

Hmmm...I'm unsure about this

He’s at least solid depth, you’d think.

Hopefully Jonathan Wade catches on with another team

I liked the guy but I have to say that I am more encouraged by this move than anything. Jonathan has all of the tools physically, but mentally he is not making the leap. If he could ever learn to get his head around and play the ball the dude could be a decent corner. That being said I am looking forward to see who gets a shot in his steed.

Houston and Phonz are solid guys in the starting rotation, but both of them have been getting banged up lately. So I am intrigued to see who will play nickel, and even who will be the 4th guy on the depth chart. Obviously Vasher is there, but don’t forget McDonald and Jack Williams, also Paul Pratt is still lurking around somewhere on the PS and I am sure we will bring in another guy or two before the season is out.

This is typical Mayhew and I like it. Churn the spots that are question marks untill you find a hit. To his credit, most of the time he hits quick, the secondary though for some reason has taken longer, which is odd considering the experience that both Mayhew and Schwartz have there.

You guys can look all the way back to when we signed him

I’ve been saying since day one that signing a CB that the Rams didn’t want is a bad idea.

Still, had at least some glimmer of hope that he could turn into a solid pro. Sad that it never happened, but was to be expected.

by motown313 on Nov 11, 2010 10:22 PM EST reply actions

Yeah.

But A. Smith was a CB that the Broncos didn’t want. The Broncos aren’t much better than the Rams. :P
