The scope of the offseason
Hey it's getting to be that time of year when the NFL regular season is winding down and Lions fans everwhere relentlessly jump right into the offseason as if it were the first game of the season. Every Lions fan is a qualified GM as I see it, as we all KNOW we could do a much better job than Mayhew or Millen or whoever has been the target the past 60 years. Last year it was pretty much consensual that the Lions would grab Suh in the draft as one of its many roster changes. This year, the pick is much less certain as there aren't many traditional top draft picks...yet...and the fact that nobody really can tell how much of this roster needs to be turned over and how much it can be turned over. Instead of saying with certainty what our lineup might be next year, I'll just list the players in groupings that I think will be looked at next year.
Players not going anywhere:
Matt Stafford, Shaun Hill, Jahvid Best, Maurice Morris, Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson, Tony Sheffler, Brandon Pettigrew, Will Heller, Sackus, Rob Sims, Gosder Cherilus, KVB, SLH, Corey Williams, Suh, Avril, Turk, Lo-jack, Levy, Follett, Alphonso, Houston, Spievey, Delmas, Harris, Stefan Logan, Willie Young
Other than that, I could see upgrading continually at every position. Plz note that I would personally move Backus to RG and do whatever I could to get a franchise LT, whether it be thru trade, FA or draft. And I would also move Levy to WLB.
I like the following players however, and think they deserve a spot next season but not a starting one:
Dylan Gandy, Jason Fox, K Smooth (if he can get back to rookie form), Ashlee Palmer, Landon Johnson, John Wendling, and possibly Aaron Brown...depends if K Smooth stays or not.
IMO, the rest should be turned over regardless of what's out there.
I think our top needs to compete are: LT, C, MLB, CB, OLB
Medium needs: 3rd WR, Power RB, 4th WR, 4th CB, K
Then just fill in the rest with quality talent. What do you think?

Center And LB are top needs.
Yes you cant take a center in th first round where we re picking but we need one bad. Domic is aweful and its time to make a change LB is also a huge need. So Id say we go CB in first round. Then we will go Oline and Defense the rest of the way. I think we will mostly go BPA aviailable becasue thats what we have sone last two years.

Yeah that seems to be the frontrunning mock right now, and justifiably as long as Peterson does well at the bowl game, senior bowl, his pro day and/or combine. Because let’s face it, without a perfect offseason, he won’t be top 5. And the draft could be weird anyway this year without a CBA in place next year…the top 7 prospects are all underclassmen, so they could technically stay in school another year, which they might do to avoid a lockout. Gonna be fun.
Avril's contract is up this year
Not much to turnover as far as the roster goes. getting a franchise LT is easier said than done…I can only think of 5 actual franchise LTs out there right now. Biggest issue that needs to be solved: OLBs…we need to find two solid starters. Gun’s scheme doesn’t ask much from the linebackers, but the guys that are starting can’t even fill that role.
Next big thing: evaluate Spievey at the safety spot and see whether or not he really is the answer. I personally would like to see them bring in another aging starter to both take over for him if he struggles and teach him how to play the position (something that he is doing for the first time).
The beginning of the end of the misery
Yeah LT isn't exactly pick one and get em
but if there is a disgruntled one out there with another team, maybe trade for him or if there is one that stands out at the draft and falls to us grab em, or if FA somehow has one (doubtful)…but don’t just write it off already.
On Spievey, I think yeah go out and get a veteran that knows the scheme well. But Spievey is the guy until he proves that he absolutely is not the guy. We used a 3rd on him, he needs to pan out or at least get the chance to play early to evaluate whether or not he can pan out. Can’t waste him on the bench as a backup/spot special teams player.
I also think Levy is a much bigger asset on the outside than inside. He runs extremely well and is surprisingly physical. The problem is, he tends to get blocked or he isn’t to blow up a couple guys in the middle to stuff the dive play. He’s just not big bodied enough. He’s a hell of a player I believe, but I just think with his speed and ability to tackle well in open areas, he’d be better out there. For simple comparison, if I rate him as like an 85 as in Madden ratings in the middle, I’d rate him as a 95 on the outside. I think he could be one of the top OLBs in the game, whereas I don’t see that at MLB. I think he’s just slightly above average at MLB, and his smaller LB frame would breakdown quicker in the middle. I want to get more of a true run stopper in the middle.
just my opinion though.
yea
I like levy on the outside too…not sure if would be a “95” OLB tho. My dream scenario would be landing Greg Jones in the second round
The beginning of the end of the misery
no...he is in the mid 230lbs range

its not just weight
A guy can be 260 and still play OLB if he is athletic enough. Jones is good enough of a talent to play any LB position, but his leadership, combined with his ability to read offenses (something that doesnt get talked about) and his athleticism make him a better MLB (of course this is all my opinion)
The beginning of the end of the misery
without a doubt
Jones was born to play linebacker. As much natural ability and instincts as anyone. I would only question his speed to get sideline to sideline.

I think Jones would be great if we can get him 2nd round
If it were me, I would think Jones in the middle, Levy outside and whatever we figure out for the other side… I think that gives us a damn good crew and sures up the defense quite a bit if we do in fact grab Peterson 1st.
I like your thinking.
We’ve been a one-dimensional offense pretty much since Barry left. The constant has been Backus and Raiola, on top of the revolving talent on the right side. We need big guys who can push the pile, then we can get our own version of LaGarett Blount or Ben Jarvis-Amos-Green-James-Ellis.
Suh for DROY!
I still
wish we would have went out and got Blount. Oh well though

When you say “Players not going anywhere” you mean players that SHOULDN’T go anywhere, right? Because I’m pretty much already assuming Chris Houston is out of here. Especially after reading his scary comments this week.
"I want to explore options," Houston told Birkett. "I would like to be here in Detroit, but I just want to do what’s best for me and my family."
The way I translate that is “I don’t want to piss of Detroit fans right now, but I plan on going where they are going to pay me the most.”
LBs and DBs are the priority with any OL being the next pressing need.
I think Houston is in for a rude awakening...
he has played well, but coming from Detroit, he isn’t going to get the top dollars a guy like Dunta Robinson got. I think he’ll field some offers from teams, but at the end of the day, if Detroit wants him, they will be able to re-sign him without over-paying.
by lions_sucker on Dec 11, 2010 1:54 PM EST up reply actions
I disagree
I don’t think he’ll get top dollar but he’ll get a contract matching any we would of gave him, I’m worried about Avril, either he’ll leave, we over pay for him like Redding or franchise him. All scary thoughts
I think Avril...
stays for a bit more money. He’s had some injury problems and hasn’t quite lived up to his potential. Next time around he’ll be expensive to keep, not sure he is yet. With Houston, I think he’ll be affordable, and if Mayhew will want to keep him, he’ll get him.
by lions_sucker on Dec 11, 2010 3:16 PM EST up reply actions
I think Avril stays
He is really gacious to this franchise…follow him on twitter and youll see. Plus, he isn’t an elite DE…just very solid so he wont court any outrageous offers
The beginning of the end of the misery
I don't think we'll let him go
unless someone comes in with an absurd offer, then I think the Lions will be able and willing to give Chris a little Cash (if I can summon the former Lion for a little pun). Avril I think will get a good offer from Mayhew as well, however, DEs tend to get the absurd offers more frequently, so in that case, I could see him signing elsewhere for a good deal more than we’d offer.
Hopefully he resigns soon
I’m anxious to keep.

Good Post....this gets a rec'd from me.
The biggerst needs IMO are. A run blocking center. Some real starters at the linebacker position. Levy needs to move to the outside. Either draft or sign a big time thumper in the middle. I know alot of us are talking up Greg Jones. I see him as an OLB. I have also noticed that Bruce Carter seems to be dropping in some mocks. I know it is far too early to accurately judge where player are going to fall this far from the draft. But if we can do the samething as we did to get Best. I would not mind that at all. With the current Lions draft projection. I do see us getting Peterson or Prince.

I would
go out and grab Stephen Tulloch in FA moving Levy to WLB. I would draft Bowers or Peterson in the first then an OLB in the 2nd If Travis Lewis was there get him if not Jones will be, and scoop up a guard in the 3rd Pouncey might be there then a Center in the 4th like Tim Barnes.
My biggest needs are:
C – A smart anchor who can lead our push in the run side of things.
OG – Someone to either replace Peterman or provide youthful depth.
WR – A solid slot type guy.
OLB – This is a big one for me. We need a LB who can take advantage of the defensive line’s ability to plug up holes and create pressure. To be honest, we need a superstar at the LB position.
CB – We need a good cover guy, maybe even two. One taken high, one taken low.
S – Someone to fight Spievey for the safety spot.

Last year everyone wanted Backus gone
or moved inside to help solidify the line, so I’m surprised reading that most prefer a DB over LT.
I guess Schwartz was right last year when he said Backus was good

is the linebacking corps. Most of our DB’s can cover for 3 seconds and that’s what our D-line does, pressure the QB. We get beat on short passes for long gains.
Trade down from that 1st rd pick and get solid players for the O-line and LB corps. The game is won and lost at the line of scrimmage. Our D-line is deep, our O-lne not quite there yet.
We need good 2nd stringers and solid LB’s to win more games.
What we need.
I would love to get a left tackle better than Backus. I don’t think you will find one. I would like a center better than Raiola. But again, I don’t think you will find one. Instead, I would like to see young line talent brought in. Some one who would spell right guard, or would allow for the adjusting of the line. Players switching positions from time to time. Either way I would like to spend a draft pick and get a young free agent lineman.
Recievers are fine. Do we need a 3rd reciever? We have several. Toone, Bryant J., Williams, Logan. This would be low on my want list.
Running backs, With the warrior Smith and a healthy Best you have two great backs. If we can figure out how to pay Morris, we are doing well. Felton is Ok.
QB- Stafford is like Phil Simms, but with a better arm. I would like the team to come around quick enough for Staff to be throwing in the SB. Lets see if Hill heals up and has another year in him. Stanton did ok last week. Let’s watch him this week. I would hold.
D-line, find a way to sign Avril, keep Smith happy, and then Suh and KVB will shine. Not bad backups, if we can keep Hill and Jackson and Turk. Maybe Yough is the real deal, we’ll have to see.
Linebackers, If Julian is gone, we need 3. Maybe Levy can be coached up, but maybe he needs to learn to tackle. I loved the hard hits from him in college but they are not showing up in the pros. I’d look at LB early in the draft or maybe trade for one of the guys we missed last year.
Corners, try to sign Houston and then get two. Again, I would draft one high and look at free agent or trade. I would look to keep Houston and Alphonso, but I would love to have Alphonso at nickle.
Safteys, Delmas is good, but Spivey loses focus and does not make the tackles he should.
I like our coaches and coordinators. The only time we play on offense like we are trying to win is when Stafford is in there. Every time Hill is in, we play to not make a mistake or try to force the ball down field.

If they cut me, I bleed Honalulu blue and silver.
while watching the game
I had an interesting thought about next season.
What if we were to add D’Quan Bowers at DE and moved KVB to MLB. He’s played well there in our 3/4 look and I think he could transition to it in the base D.
They say some people never go crazy.... what a boring life that must be!!
no way man!
First off, Levy is fine at MLB. Hes a better OLB, but he is still pretty solid in the middle. Plus, KVB is like 270 lb. He could maybe play OLB
The beginning of the end of the misery
Levy's still getting better too.
He’s far from hitting his ceilling.
If you can't spell practise write, then dont repond!
My thoughts...
This team should go into this off-season really looking at 3 position areas: Linebacker, Offensive Line, and Cornerback. If we can sign Chris Houston and he doesn’t leave (looks like a longshot, but who knows) I’d still like to have a genuine top end cornerback so what happened Thanksgiving has less of a chance of reoccuring. The only linebacker we have is Levy (who’s better outside than inside, but Schwartz has to stubbornly insist he’s the MLB of the present and future) while Julian Peterson is at the end of the line (and who knows about how well Zack Follet and Landon Johnson comeback from injuries). Offensive line we should try to find an upgrade at LT as Jeff Backus is pretty clearly at the end of the line even though he’s had a better career than many give him credit for and we also need a Center (which are usually available in the second round).
My thoughts for the draft:
1st Round-Peterson or the CB from Nebraska
2nd Round-Best LB that fits our system or best Center.
3rd Round-If no LB in the 2nd? Greg Jones if he’s available so that Levy can go back to his true position of WLB.
Granted, we have also done well in addressing the teams needs through trades (Sims) or waiver wire (Logan) so the draft isn’t the only means of help here.
