What I have liked about the 2010 Lions .....so far.
I thought I would take an opportunity to go back to optimist mode and highlight some of the things I have been impressed with about the Lions in 2010. Here is my list to date [Not in any order]:
1. Stafford - when he has played [yeah I know] he has looked every inch the leader this team needs. His accuracy and reads and judgement have improved greatly over last year. Still has a long way to go, but I like what I have seen.
2. Pettigrew and the two TE Formation - Grew has played very well this season as a receiver. He gets open and seems to be a load to bring down. Yes he has lots of room for improvement, but that leaves me more optimistic about his future. The two TE set seems to take advantage of our strength at TE and I'll give some of our pass blocking improvement to that set as well. Again, there is a lot of untapped potential here, especially in the run blocking side, but I really like this as our base offence.
3. Suh - he has been everything that the Lions expected when they drafted him. The foundation for a strong defensive line for a long time. Cliff and Lawrence Jackson have played very well at end to suggest that Suh will have some solid support.
4. Special Teams - led by Stefan Logan on returns and John Wendling on coverage, the Lions special teams have become a strength of this team.
5. Calvin and Nate - Calvin has stepped up his play from last year and looks motivated again. Nate is a great complement and is justifying the big contract he received. A dangerous duo.
6. The Secondary - Houston and Delmas could be a good base to build a strong secondary. Alphonso and Spievey have had their moments, good and bad, but overall this group has played much better than was anticipated.
Well, that's my list. If you have any other thoughts on what you have liked so far let's hear from you. If all you have are complaints and disappointments....please start another thread.

Isaiah Ekejiuba on special teams. He got injured for a couple games. But he has been outstanding otherwise.

Did I mention..I love the Phonz!
I think Gosder Cherlious has made big strides
I’d like to see Gosder compete for the LT spot in a year or two, hope Jason Fox can become a RT
The D-Line is pretty good.
Lions Super Bowl 2012
agreed
Gos is FINALLY showing why he was a first round pick. granted he hasn’t been phenomenal but he is at least holding his own. I wouldn’t mind seeing them give him a shot at LT, and I def. want to see what Fox can do. From all I’ve read, Fox is a freak athlete but it really raw.

I agree about Gosder. He has been quietly doing his job.
I think we are expecting more from him on the run blocking side, but he has excelled in pass blocking this year. A great improvement over his 2009 performance.
+1
Gos has been good.
RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.

Am I the only one not sold on our special teams?
Sure, our returns are more fun to watch. No more 3 yards and a cloud of dust.
But what about how many times we let 6 get by us? We are ALWAYS in danger of letting the other team get points when we kick or punt. Much like our defense, we are always in danger of giving up the big play.
ATL, I checked the stats and I was surprised a bit by the results.
While our returns are #1 in KO and #6 Punts, on the coverage side we are #8 on KO and #26 in Punts. I thought we were better on the punt coverage side. I know that the 97 yard return against the Cowboys bounced our stats a bit, but even without that return we are middle of the pack around 9.5 yards per return.
Part of the problem that I see is that too many of Detroit’s punts are being returned. Detroit is last in the NFL in most yards given up on punt returns. Other teams kick it out of bounds or force more fair catches. Sort of an indictment of the return coverage and Harris’ punting too.
I think...
Isaiah being out added to some of the poor coverage, as well as Follett being on IR. Before those injuries, we were shutting guys down.

Good Post
I agree with all of your points, with the exception of maybe the secondary. i think they are much better than last year and I agree that Houston, Delmas and mayyyybe Spivey and Phonz are good building blocks, but they haven’t exactly been a picture of consistency this year. I think we need to go after a top tier CB in the draft, move phonz to nickel, and pick up a solid SS. Spivey is talented but doesn’t have the experience at safety to cover over the top. Maybe the coaches think that with one offseason under his belt he can cut it…we shall see. Also, I am in love with the Dline. Starters are obviously amazing, but SLH, McBride, Willie, and LJacks on the bench keeps me warm at night.
I sort of skipped Sammie Lee because he has not had a lot of playing time in any one game.
But I am hoping he sees more of the field in the last five games and shows some growth from last year. He and Suh could be a great tandem for the next four or five years.
But when he is in
He is making plays. I think this role suits him a lot more than full time rookie starter. He comes in on running downs and messes up the place.
Yes I like the idea of rotating our tackles.....
..but the Lions don’t seem to be doing that much. Sammie does not seem to be getting a lot of snaps. I know it is heresy to suggest that Suh take a few snaps off, but a regular rotation might help Corey and Suh be fresher for the end of the game when we need a killer pass rush or a big stop.
I tried to find out how many snaps Sammie Lee has played this year but I could not find any site that reports that. I know the PFF guys do, but you have to pay for that info.
I bought season tickets for next year after reading this.....lol
Seriously, there’s glimmer of hope on the team for sure. Of course there was glimmer of hope for this year also…..So I think I’ll just leave my pompom’s in the closet and just hope for a fast start next season.
The only legend around here is the one that exists in your own mind.
good list...
the main thing that worries me is that we still have a huge need in the defensive back 7 and the oline. Perhaps we focus on one spot again on the oline (preferably interior) and then beef up the lb corp or secondary, much like we did the dline this season.
Then, we acquire a no.2 WR so Nate can play the slot mostly, and we should be much improved, since we can add depth to be ready for injuries and will have very few weaknesses. Spievey and Alphonso growing and solidifying starting jobs would make next season much better as well.
Hopes for 2011
1. Solid 3rd WR – No more BJ or Dwill.
2. Star Draft picks – Hopefully Prince or Peterson and maybe Greg Jones.
3. Fox pushing for starting job.
4. See ya Julius
5. Less mistakes
