Kevin Smith I have some bad news........

I can't say enough about Moe Morris. He hits the wholes he played that big time football at RB I haven't seen in that Honolulu Blue since Kevin Jones against Chicago in our last road win. Kevin Smith has been a solid back for us but since his rookie season his career has been almost identical to Kevin Jones. As a rookie he's showed promise but has been spotty there after. He's one of those Millen guys who when u look at that draft we could've gotten Forte or Rice in the 2nd except for Dizon. Jamal Charles who's looking great for KC was picked 9 places after K. Smith. I like Kevin's tenacity but he hasn't worked out the last couple seasons. Maurice Morris looked good last year when Smith got hurt and again this year. We need a real power back and Kevin Smith isn't that guy which makes him expendable. You guys ripped me last week tell me how you feel about this one.

Too soon to tell with K Smooth

He’s been injured and playing injured too much since his rookie year to make a fair judgement IMO. He still showed some good flashes this year before he got hurt.

I'm a Ksmith backer

Morris is a good RB, it’s a shame he signed with us when he should got a chance to start for someone else. His age is now a problem, do you want to build your running game around a 31 year old back

I’ll give Smith one more year to see if he’s worth keeping, he’s still young, and with Best in the picture he wouldn’t have to be a work horse back. Usually it takes a full year to recover from his type of knee injury. Look a Brady his 1st year back compared to this year, look a E-james 1st year back then look at his stats the following year. I’ll give Smith one more year…

You really can't judge Mo Mo

on his age. He has always been behind other runners who were “better” than he is and as a result he has not see the carries and taken the beating that other RB his age have. He has a ton of miles left on his tires.

I like Wins, Cheese and I also Like Cookies. If you don't. Wow. :P

you can only judge morris on wins

how many wins does he have? how many losses? Use that to decide whether or not he sucks.

I think there is room for Mo and Kevin.

Those two and Best and Felton, plus another back …….not named Aaron Brown.

There just is no place for Aaron anymore, especially now that they are working Logan into the offence more.

The new back would be more of a power type that could also play special teams. Hopefully this guy will be picked up in the sixth or fifth round or as a Free Agent.

by NorthLeft12 on Dec 20, 2010 10:45 AM EST reply actions

It could come down to $$$$$$$$

I’d like too beleave that Browns’ contract is WAY cheaper than K-smooth’s. Brown is faster younger by a year, didn’t have 1000 carries on his legs in collage, I think Brown has better hands than K-Smooth also. With all the money on other high draft picks on this team K-Smooth just might be a cap casulty.

I think K Smooth has worth

beyond running. He’s our best blocker at RB and is an efficient catcher. I think his spirit means we need to give him another shot when he’s fully healthy. I wouldn’t count that guy out just yet. He might have to learn some ST though in the offseason to stay around.

Maurice Morris exemplifies everything this team should aspire to be.

Delmas, Megatron, Stafford vs. CLE… playing hurt and excelling while doing it.

Morris was amazing yesterday and contributed immensely to the win, including crucial gains late in the 4th. It was an absolute pleasure to watch him yesterday.

k smith need to go.. and he shouldnt have even been on the team this year..

i do disagree on felton though he is a solid power back he needs to get the ball more.. he rarely has a negative play.. the staff just doesn’t like to use him.. if the get another power back that they will use more then i am fine.. but felton is decent

may not be a popular but

I think there’s room for all these guys..except maybe Felton. They all add something. Ksmith needs to be used like Chester Taylor more of a receiver and blocker. Best is the game breaker he’s are Jamal Charles. Mo Mo is a power guy. He won’t break a 100 plus yard game often but he can move the chains and keep the run game alive. Aaron Brown is good depth something else we need. My only concern is FB Felton has done nothing as the “power back” and doesn’t do much as blocker either. What are run game needs is a road grating gaurd and a true FB. We need someone like Bare Pasco to open up lanes and create big runs by blocking.

In the past I would agree with you about Felton and getting a true FB

But Sunday, I notice Felton getting to the 2nd level and springing MoMo on some of those big runs. But ever since the coaching staff decided to go RB by Committee. The Lions have been one the of the better rushing team in the league.

You are SOOOOO right Bishop

The last 5 weeks or so we have actually been running the ball pretty damn good. Now if we could just find a RG that could be athletic we would be able to run on either side of the line. I read on another thred that we needed to get rid of Cherilous, I think he is in the exact same boat as Backus was in going into last season. Everyone wanted him cut and gone, then we got a PB caliber LG and now look at Backus one of the best LT in the league this year. We need a RG that can get to the second level and a newer C would be nice as well. I can’t say I hate him but I can’t say it would break my heart if we replaced him either.

Wow

No mention of Best in this thread. We still don’t have “THAT BACK” that every
good team has. Morris has shown more than Smith this year. I’ve never really
been a Smith fan, especially since his first year. We always seem to get a back
that has the start of the season hype to be “THAT BACK”, and it never comes to
fruition. For me, with Best, Morris, and Brown….Smith is expendable. I don’t know
what we could get for him because other teams are looking for “THAT BACK” as
well. He ain’t it!

What qualifies a guy as “that back”? It seems like most successful teams are shying away from one dominant workhorse back, and instead have two or even three guys they rotate in and out.

if K Smith wasnt hurt

do you believe that he couldn’t do what MoMo did yesterday? i think he could have. I’ve always liked MoMo he trys to make something happen every time he touchs the ball. Even when hes trying to makes something out of nothing he is moving forward not laterally down the line. K Smith also moves forward and not so much side to side action. K Smith this year when he was healthy was getting it done its too bad he got hurt because right now we would be saying CJ and K Smith were unstoppable.MoMo is the man there is a reason he is still in the league

to me K Smith

is basically the same type of RB MoMo is. they both have good hands and hit creases hard. we could keep either one of them and i wouldnt have any hard feelings about losing one of the 2. I do see your pt. in slipping tackles though. when MoMo gets to the 2nd level he tries to slip the LBer or Safety Ksmith on the other hand tries to run them over. MoMo ran his heart out yesterday and i believe K Smith would have done the same. All in all i would shut Best down for the year and let MoMo and Logan take care of the run game. Im not liking what im seeing out of Best since his toe injuries.

Here we go again

Morris has one good game, and we’re talking about keeping a 31 year old back that makes more than 2 mil. K Smooth is 24, runs pretty good (for a backup) and is an every down back that will be a great 3rd down back once hes healthy. If you’re expecting Adrian Peterson out of him….well then you have to look elsewhere. Tampa’s run defense was ranked 27th coming in and that was before they lost Gerald McCoy.

What was the bad news?

Morris has been great, when he’s on the field. But, he has been paid greatly to sit his tail on the bench. The true tragedy here is how KS was the workhorse and was getting the least $$$.

KS did a decent job of hitting what holes there were to hit, this year. Next year he should be even better. We still have plenty of holes to fill, I wouldn’t make RB a priority, but if there’s an upgrade, go for it.

We will keep all our backs .. weak link will be cut .. unless there is a cheap upgrade or an undrafted rookie who does very well ..

RB is not an area of need for us .. we have to concentrate elsewhere … why is it that one player does good one game that we wanna either trade him or trade/cut someone who plays the same position ?

We have to build .. not start creating holes !

Creating a hole and opening up an opportunity (aka hole)

Running backs are nothing more then commodity players..

Draft one every year, bring in free agents any time of year, and never draft one above the 3rd round. If you get 3 years out of a serviceable back, consider yourself lucky. Put the effort into a quality 12 year lineman.

Yes there’s always the rare back, but more often then not their done in 3 or 4 years.

If they all got hurt you could grab any dickhead off the street to hand the ball to and say run stupid and hold onto the football.

Just CB and S that were still on the board at that point were…Patrick Robinson CB, Chris Cook CB, Nathaniel Allen S, TJ Ward S, Taylor Mays S, and Javier Arenas CB. Dont really know all the stats on those guys but I would of been just as happy if the Lions took the approach to sit in the second and see what false to them. No matter what year it is, 2018 or 2012, people will still be like, “its too early to tell” and “give him more time”. Around here, its like he invented the AIDS vaccine.
I personally think we can do without his 3.1 yards per carry and think we should draft another back that doesnt go down due to shoestring tackles, but hey, what do i know?
We need a back that is good for more than just blocking, we need someone to run the ball (when mr. turftoe is healthy also).

MoMo

by Phreaking Mohican on Dec 20, 2010 8:31 PM EST reply actions

well

at least it’s not an article fawning over the {good/bad} performance of the QB and how he should be {kept/traded/cut}

I like MoMo but am not going to anoint him as a stud or even a quality starter. I like the spirit of MoMo and Ksmooth. They’re both good guys and have a value to the team outside of their actual performance. Here’s my breakdown of the backs we have:
Best: potential to be a stud, should have been put in IR weeks ago. (long term option)

K Smith: Good presence, reliable blocker, limited talent to make actual running plays, unreliable health. I don’t think he can be depended on even as a 25% touch committee back, but he’s worth giving a another shot in training camp at least. (not a long term option)

MoMo: reliable on ST, blocks, catches, and runs. Not going to overwhelm you but is reliable which is what we need. (not a long term option but can be relied on next year more than KS32)

Brown: Fast, but unreliable in any aspect of the game. Unable to follow routes in pass game, lackluster consistency on ST reterns and forget about being a gunner, uncreative run style. (package him in some deal or otherwise send down the road, no future on team)

Logan: Fast and instinctual runner. Willing to put his body and soul into his game whether it’s runs, passes, or blocks (but lacks the ooomph to deliver a quality block). I just hope expanded use wont take away from the suicide run approach a returner needs. (if he’ll sign we need to keep him! He should be able to perform for the team in some capacity at least a few years barring injury)

Felton: Sure he’s got a bit of power but generally not better than a mid tier runner, is a low tier blocker, horrible hands for dump pass, basically lacks instincts. (send down the road however it takes, it’s worth using a mid to late round pick to find a possible replacement, we still have that converted TE to FB (Nordin) on IR to come work out in the spring too. I hope we get a guy like Chappas out of Georgia in the draft, he’s an excellent blocker, just not fantastic runner)

Ian Johnson: Mediocre backup option at best. Decent speed and good instincts but has little punch to break tackles and is more north/south guy as far as agility. (Likely wont be a factor for us)

They say some people never go crazy.... what a boring life that must be!!

by Ee Oulo on Dec 20, 2010 8:58 PM EST reply actions

Listen

Neither one is worth keeping, unless we cannot get better talent in the offseason. How many of you own maumo or ksmitty in fantasy leagues? They are not elite. Best has the potential to be when healthy, we’ll see how that plays out.
We still have a lot of talent to upgrade, but we’re getting there. Maybe we roll with these guys next year, fix the D and OL this draft, and draft an RB for 2012. That’s fine. But make no mistake, we will need to draft another stud RB in the next year or two if we want to make the playoffs. Best and another young stud would be perfect.

Just livin' the dream...
