Lions Notes: Will Drew Stanton Or Shaun Hill Start At Quarterback This Week?
- Ndamukong Suh had the most votes for the Pro Bowl for rookies and defensive tackles. The Pro Bowl rosters will be announced on Dec. 28.
- Who will start for the Lions at quarterback this week is a mystery and probably will be until Sunday morning. Shaun Hill took the first-team reps on Wednesday, but today Drew Stanton was working with the No. 1 group of players. Stanton and Hill evenly split the overall reps, so it looks like Jim Schwartz won't make a decision about who to start until closer to Sunday.
- One certainty this week at quarterback is that Matthew Stafford will be out. Schwartz already announced that Stafford is at least another week away from being able to return.
- Tony Sparano admitted that it's difficult trying to prepare for more than one quarterback, so I guess Schwartz's secrecy isn't for nothing.
- The Buccaneers apparently got a written apology from the NFL for the offensive pass interference call that went against them on what would have been a touchdown catch made by Kellen Winslow if not for the penalty. The call didn't seem that questionable to me considering Winslow was the first one to engage C.C. Brown, but I guess the NFL determined the officials got the wrong call. I wonder if the Lions have received an apology for any of the many calls that have gone against them this year.
- Louis Delmas did not practice today because of a concussion. He said he passed a concussion test on Monday, but the Lions are being extra cautious.
- Gunther Cunningham warned Dolphins running back Ricky Williams that if he crackback blocks any Lions defensive backs on Sunday, Cunningham is "coming on the field."
- Like Louis Delmas, DeAndre Levy expects to have groin surgery this upcoming offseason.
- The Patriots signed former Lion Landon Cohen.

I highly doubt Stafford is coming back agaisnt Minny
He practiced a couple weeks before coming back against the Redskins, only one week of practice before Minny, I don’t think so…..
to sell tickets for the remaining home games

i should have known the cynical answer would come from you!
did you figure out the santa BS when you were like 3 or 4 years old? I have never, ever known anyone so cynical about everything! lol
:)
Cynical huh?
Seems like the most likely answer to me.
Its nothing against him or the Lions as an organization. Its logical. Keep him on the active roster with the slim chance he actually can play the last game of the season alive. It generates buzz and sales for that last game.
You wanna bet the QB for that last game will be a weekend or game time decision?
Cynical. Nah, realistic.

I think it’s so that he can be in the meetings and on the sidelines and take part in everything possible

I agree with you josh
Two games left. We are not going to the post season. There is no reason to put Matthew on the IR. Let him continue to throw in practice. Let the media run wild with the idea of him playing against the VIkes. Keep the team in the local headlines. Business 101. What does it hurt?
The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. But the opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth. - Niels Bohr
I actually agree with you here.
It looks less and less likely that he will play, so it doesn’t hurt that they threw him out there as a little bait for the fans. That said, I think they had every intention of him coming back this season… it just hasn’t gone as well as they hoped.
right, and I am glad we finally found some common ground
It is not like it is some mortal sin to keep him active and ready to go. His time frame from the first injury would have allowed him to play in the home game against minny. The problem with that. This is the second injury to the same area. Despite what the team tells us, he re injured the same injury he had before.
I know they are trying to run the damage control but he was brought back too soon the first time because they had ZERO confidence in Stanton. Another personnel mismanagement. Unlike the Best situation, this one can be over looked. Stanton is not a pretty player. He plays ugly ball.
I remember the games he played against U of M. You were always waiting for him to mess up. He could get away with it in College because of the reduced competition but against Michigan he was screwed. At the time, the U of M was a top notch team and he the scrappy QB that did more with his skill set than anyone before him for MSU. I have and always will be an U of M fan but I always had an unusual respect for Stanton. He played with a reckless abandon that every fan wants to see.
His passion for the game can not be denied. He will give 100% of what he has and he always finds a way to present just a little more. It may not be pretty but it does work.
Like many here, I discounted him because of his draft position and perceived lack of value being picked that high. These last two games we have seen just what he can bring to a team. A gritty, workman like performance that is just enough to overcome the opponents efforts.
Watching him play this year has reminded me of so many U of M games wishing he would just get injured because I was tired of seeing this kid gouge my team with “gritty” runs and seemingly lucky throws.
But that is Stanton in his essence. He does not play a beautiful game like a Brady or a Manning. He just plays with an unbridled passion that carries itself off to the rest of the team.
I have read others suggest that the team plays harder for Stanton. The more I think about it. The more I agree with that statement. His game might not be pretty but it never lacks of effort.
I like Wins, Cheese and I also Like Cookies. If you don't. Wow. :P
Your right Josh
Everyday on the radio their still throwing out the bone that it still could be any of the QB’s starting this week in MIA with their little lead ins to the football updates, and that Farve could still possibly play next week in the D.
Nice thoughts on Stanton. I had completely forgot about his grit and ugliness earlier this year when I was giving CLF shit over his Stanton love, Then I remembered his college days, and how he’s been fucked over the the Lions and jumped both feet on the bandwagon, and have never pulled for a player to succeed as I have for Stanton.
Hey, Merry Christmas Josh, nice yacking at ya.
The only legend around here is the one that exists in your own mind.
Yeah, how did that work out for the Redskins game?
You remember that game? Our one home game that did not sell out? Stafford was coming back, highly beatable team, yet it did not sell out.
There is a lot more that goes into the decision making process to attend a game than whether one guy may or may not play.
The reason they did not IR Staff is that they thought he had a slim chance of coming back and playing the last one or two games. Since this organization does not believe in throwing in the towel early, unlike some of their whining fan base, they chose to keep him on the roster for that small chance. I think any other team would have done the same with their # 1 QB.
But here we go with the conspiracy theory again. And of course the blame for that decision is on Schwartz and the Fords….the convenient whipping boys for the angry Lions fan club.

Go GUNNY!
It's a terrible thing to have to tell your fans, who have waited like Detroit's have, that their team won't win it this year. But it's better than lying to them.

Gunny is one of the last few coaches I would honestly believe would
run out to the field and take on a player. He is a dying breed of coaches and I can’t begin to tell you how happy I am to have him on our team.
I talk alot about being upset with Schwartz and my feelings have not changes but Gunny alone, being one of his assistant coaches, has tempered my frustrations with Schwartz.
If Schwartz is going to have an assistant that can “show him” old school football and how a real team gets physical. Gunny is the man for the job. I just hope Schwartz learn from him. He is a genuine asset.

This team have some serious young coaching talent. That’s what I’ve been say, their coaching up the shit out of these players.
They step on the field and while they may not be all stars, they are ready to make plays.

I am amazed at the level of marked improvement that has been made since 2008.

re: coaching staff
I’ve seen many improvements over the season. The discipline is only there in spurts however- this needs to be addressed constantly. Those penalties are the difference in wins, several of them.

depends on if...
their playin 4 draft position, or 2 win. If we’re playin 4 draft position start Hill, if we wanna win start Stanton, he odviously beat 2 teams w/ winning records, not the Redskins. Which I got so sick of hearing how well they thought Hill played, if he played so well, why is Wash te only team we beat w/ him @ the helm. I think, if we go back to pre-season, Stanton was the only one really moving the ball & getting it done where it counts, in the Red Zone. Not a state guy, but like to see homies do well.
believe it or not, more goes into a football game than just one player. Stanton won those games because the defense came up huge both times and the running game finally found its legs.

Stanton...
Ride the hot hand and start Stanton. Hill can air it out but you need alot more from your QB and Stanton has the ability to give any defense fits with his love affair for scrambling. Its an easy decision for Schwartz if you ask me. Stafford 1 win in 4 games, Hill 1 win in 7 games and Stanton 2 wins in 4 games.
Stanton 2 wins in 3 starts

Apology to Tampa...
It looked like Brown was turning around to look at the ball and Winslow pulled his shoulder so he couldn’t turn all the way around and then Brown put his hands on him. That’s what it looked like to me at least. I have two more thoughts on this though
1. Why is it that it took less then a week for the league to send an apology to the Bucs about this and it took almost a month and a half to review Stephen Petermans “bating” somebody into a chop block calls?
2. I hear the league might fine the Bucs for talking to the press about this. I don’t know how I feel about that. The league issued an apology but you’re not supposed to talk about it? Are they covering up their short comings or do they feel this falls under the rule that you’re not allowed to bad mouth refs?
The truth to me
Is that the NFL issued that apology to Tampa Bay to basically say to the Detroit Lions that we cost you a lost with Chicago and gave you a victory with Tampa Bay. They full of it.

Dear Lions,
Bend over and like it.
The National Football League
Ho, Ho, Henne gonna die. Merry Christmas! - Santa Lee Hill
The simple reality is....
We have not turned that corner yet. We are not contending for anything. Until we do, we are not going to get messages from the league. Plain and simple. Tampa, despite their lack luster schedule WAS contending. Now they are not.
There is something else to consider here too. Florida is not exactly a hot bed for the NFL in popularity. The league is aware of the need to keep those fans going. To promise them something in the near future despite the crappy team presented.
In contrast, in the D. We have shown up in hordes for crappy team we were offered. There is a fan base here built on generations of loyal followers that raised their kids in their laps watching the Lions.
The league knows, given a decent team, we are going to go ape shit over it. We will show up for a .500 team and we are going to buy the gear and we are going to follow them with a insane passion. Miami has never been that way. Even during the Marino years.
We have to accept that we are never going to get that same League love that other teams do. We, as fans, need to remember that we are proud Lions fans. We need to remember that despite everything. We wake up on Sunday morning and the whole state is involved, from children sitting in their parents laps to grandfathers telling stories of when the Lions were relevant. (My grandfather used to tell me the greatest Lions stories)
They can kick us when we are down but they will never remove that primal love that is our fandom.
Go Lions.

agreed on Miami.
The same applies to the MLB and NBA. I think the only thing that state truly shows up for is NCAA football & basketball.

Letter from the NFL
Dear Detroit Lions,
In the wake of our apology letter to Tampa Bay for the bad call in Week 15 action, we have decided to issue this letter regarding questionable calls in previous Lions games.
No. Suckers.

Well the Pats did it..
They signed Landon Cohen, one of Marinelli’s picks. So he is now going to be good.
Cohen was always a contributor
Sadly he played in a position of uncanny depth for the Lions.
He made plays for us and I am sure he will for NE.

Landon did nothing during his half a season in Jacksonville
They cut him on November 9 after the eighth week of the season. And Jacksonville was not very deep at the DE position.
Wierd thought
Is there a chance we play both, such as a preview of who we want next year as the back-up?

how is the kellen winslow play legal atall? id really like to know why they apologized for that

It couldn’t have been any more of a hold by Winslow. Kellen might as well have tackled him it was so bad.

Hello everyone, I feel compelled to write this because as I have fallen in love with the POD (In Da House) and read all the great and funny and morbid, etc. comments. I just wanna say that I feel like I’m part of a family on here with how I’ve been welcomed in so graciously and it humbles me when people respond to some of my comments, whether they agree or disagree. Thank you to all for being my fellow LIONS FANS YO!!! And Thank you Sean for the great work you do, I loved Mich Sports Center also and I miss that blog.
With that being said, I can’t think of a better fan base that has endured so much pain and suffering like we have who deserve a winner more than us. I can feel it folks, we’re on the cusp of something special here! We’re gonna start kicking others teams arses in the coming years.
I’m so excited about this team and some of the tweaking that Mayhew will conduct and make us formidable. Next year can’t come soon enough.
Merry Christmas to everyone and have a super and safe holiday season!!
Oh and GO LIONS!!!
Happy holidays too you
We are 2 drafts from being a real contender, IMHO. We can cause some damage next year given the right circumstances but I do not see us knocking any of the elite teams off.
Mayhew has done a fantastic job of bringing talent to the team. Now is the real test. How will he perform when the number of holes on the team are drastically reduced?
Will he continue to find “diamonds” in the rough. Or will his well dry up? The next two off seasons will define his career as the Lions GM.

reminds me of the chargers rebuilding here in san diego. Its easy to take the BPA at a position of need. You just keep filling holes with the best talent you can get. However the real salt and vinegar comes when you are creating depth and upgrading guys from b- c+ players to a’s. thats the hard part. welcome, SanDiegoMick

Looking at the roster, we pretty much started from scratch after 0-16. The one quality starter we had was CJ. Since then, we’ve gotten a QB, RB, TE x2, MLB, S, DE x2, and DT x2. That’s 10 quality starters that the front office and coaching staff drafted, developed, or traded for. And that doesn’t even count the borderline guys like the entire o-line, any of our corners, or d-line depth. Assuming our remaining needs are 2 CBs, 1 S, 2 LBs, we might just be able to fix that in one offseason. If you count a brand new o-line, maybe 2 years.
That said, no team is perfect at every position. If we fill even half of that and stay relatively healthy, we can contend with anyone.

I was upset yesterday when I read that Hill took the 1st team reps…and now I am happy to read that Stanton took them yesterday. I am hopeful that Drew will get the nod.
