Lions Notes: Landon Johnson To IR; Paul Pratt Signed Off Practice Squad

  • The Lions have placed linebacker Landon Johnson on injured reserve. Taking his spot on the roster is cornerback Paul Pratt, who was signed off the practice squad.
  • Calvin Johnson missed practice on Thursday. Chris Houston was also out for the second straight day.
  • Most unsurprising news of the week: Shaun Hill will start at quarterback for the Lions.
  • Brett Favre reportedly failed another concussion test on Wednesday. The only way he can play on Sunday if is he passes a series of concussion tests before then, so right now it's unlikely we'll see No. 4 again in the NFL.
  • Ndamukong Suh doesn't remind Gunther Cunningham of anyone because he already is in a league of his own. Cunningham said "there's no comparison" to Suh.
  • Cunningham also said that he laughed when he saw which defensive tackles made the Pro Bowl. Why? Because he believes Corey Williams should be a Pro-Bowler.
I'll play with our two guys any day over any of those guys. I think Corey Williams should've been in the Pro Bowl, I really do.''
Cunningham had many great things to say about Williams' play on the field and his leadership off it.
  • Two more interesting things from Cunningham: He said that secondary coach Tim Walton is the best secondary coach he's ever seen other than Marty Schottenheimer, and he said this when asked about making halftime adjustments last week against Miami:
"One of the coaches gave me a bunch of drawings for halftime to go over and make the adjustments. I threw 'em in the corner and said 'This isn't about X's and O's right now.' I challenged all the guys for the second half. I told them we could win this game if everybody stays the course and plays football and doesn't worry about anything else - the wind or their Wildcat or anything else. And it worked.
    Gotta love Gunther.
  • Via Alfie at Big Cat Country, all three of Jacksonville's Pro-Bowlers this season and three of their five Pro Bowl alternates were "Shack Harris products." Harris is a personnel executive for the Lions currently and used to be the vice president of player personnel for the Jaguars. (Via TLIW)

It seems like the secondary will not change too much

if signing Phillips and now Pratt is an indication of intentions for this offseason, it looks like we’ll have a good number of our young DBs competing for spots. Of course we know Gun is big on Aaron Berry as well. It’d be great if two of those three turn into quality depth (or even better if Berry can beat a good CB for the Nickel or Phillips beats Speivey…)

Definately will be great competition in the off-season

especially if we draft a CB also.

Its almost the off season, Lets the madness begin!!

If the Lions draft real good for 2011, they could knock around alot of teams out of contention. Keep building the Lions through the draft and I guarantee you, “the silver cat” will take the division.

I want to see Brett Favre get one last Pounding in Detroit before its over!!!

This broke down old man has torched us throughout the years.

I want him to play one more game. I want to see him get abused by the defense. I want to see Suh ragdoll him like he did to Colt McCoy. I want his NFL career to end in defeat in Detroit. This would make my season.

Favre record Vs The Detroit Lions: 23-9
He is 13-3 against the Lions this decade
He has NEVER lost a home game to them
He has thrown for 8,753 yards against the Lions in his career, the most against any other opponent.
In his past four meeting against the Lions he is 4-0 and has completed 83-of-108 passes (76.9 pct.) for 979 yards with eight touchdowns and no interceptions.

I can't even imagine trying to count

how many times last year it seemed like the Lions had a sure sack, either by Hunter, White or Avril, and every time the QB was able to nonchalantly step up and make an easy throw. Now, because of our two new DT’s and the improved play of SLH, QB’s have no chance. I would rather have Corey over any of the other NFC Pro-Bowl DT’s.

Agreed. Williams worked out better than I expected.

He’s a main cog in the gearbox of that D-Line. Really happy with him.

Hmmm

So Gunther got mad at people trying to adjust their game plan? I don’t think I like that way of thinking.

by ATL Lion on Dec 31, 2010 8:28 AM EST reply actions

I like

that he had confidence in his game plan, and told the players to execute better, and they did.

it about the Miami game. And since the Lions out scored the 'Phins 24-10

in the second half. Gun was right. They did not need to make second half adjustments in that game. They needed to

Everyone looks great when we win

I was thinking more of the first 3/4 of the season. Like that New England game. Or the Jets who couldn’t move in the first half and couldn’t be stopped in the second.

Look, I am happy with Gunther. I always kind of liked him even when he was at KC. It is just that one of my complaints this year is that we always seem to be better in the first half than the second. The TV guys talk about it in terms of the Lions “running out of gas”, but I always thought it might be a lack of adjustment. Hearing Gunther make that comment makes me think there might be more to the latter than the former.

by ATL Lion on Dec 31, 2010 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

Well two things

First, since the person that reported this. Thought it was news worthy enough to make a comment on it. I am guessing that it was something out of the ordinary for Gun to do. To ignore any advice from the defensive coaching staff.

Secondly, This is week 16. If Gun and the Lions do not make halftime adjustments. It seem reasonsable to assume that the asistants would stop make suggestions.

That's a good point,

also, I don’t think his (Gunny’s) comment meant that they ignore making adjustments, since last week or sometime earlier, I think, Schwartz said they make constant adjustments throughout an entire game.

Gunny’s an awesome crazy asshole, I think everyone agrees on that. Not sure what kind of adjustments we could’ve made against the Pats, and Jets, when Houston got hurt. Just two of those games where people would’ve said that we crumbled late. I think there were actually a lot of games where we fell behind and had to climb our way back into it.

That is a good point

Well done with your detective work.

Of course, since we did lose in the second half a lot… Now I am mad they kept adjusting their gameplan! Why fix it if it aint broke!

Depends on the situation

The fins werent doing anything we didnt understand, we just werent executing in the 1st half. No need to panic, just go out and play solid football. Which they did.
