Avril and Lojack

Cliff Avril and Lawrence Jackson will be key in this game if we are to face Joe Webb.

In his first start as Vikings QB, his mobility kept him out the defenses hands and got the ball into Percy Harvin's. He also showed off a little bit of Vick skills, dashing in for a nice TD run. But let's remember he is a very young QB, now going up against arguably the best D-line in the NFL. Webb apparently loves to run to his right or left to give himself time. Now with our beat up secondary, even though vastly improved, it still gives up those big plays at least once.  It's up too Avril and Lojack to make sure he does not have that time to run sideways. We need to make Webb step up and into the loving arms of Suh and Williams.

I hope all of you here at POD had a fantastic 2010! I certainly did. I also hope you enjoyed this season of Detroit Lions football. All in all, through disappointment, injuries, bad luck, bad calls, blowouts (both ways), the lengthening of streaks, then breaking multiple streaks and then a winning streak, this season was a heck of a lot of fun! I'm pumped for the off-season! But we got one more assignment. - Let's put some Viqueens in the dirt and leap out of the cellar! GO LIONS!!

Happy New Years!!!

Don't mean to quibble but I don't recall the Lions getting blown out at all in 2010.

Biggest loss margin was to the Pats and that game was tied going into the fourth quarter. That is a hell of a change from 2008 and 2009.

by NorthLeft12 on Dec 31, 2010 10:44 PM EST reply actions

Still lost 45-24

Even if it was a short margin of time we lost the game, still a blowout, but heck yah. A little better than 48-3 loss last year

Its almost the off season, Lets the madness begin!!

LoJack has a groin but should play.

Could we have a Willie Young siting?

We have so much depth on the D-line

It amazes me, we get excited at the chance of our 3rd string DE playing!

Which to me makes the talk about drafting a DE in the 1st rd, ridicilous.

Were stacked there, and have many other places of need other then DE.

I agree...

I understand we don’t have a DE with 12-13 sacks, but the way we rotate, between Avril, Lojack, and McBride, our DE’s avg 2-4 sacks/game. I think the Bowers predictions must be based on us taking BPA, since we will be picking around the ten-spot. I think Mayhew would trade down to get a guy like Travis Lewis or Brandon Harris at a major area of need before taking Bowers. That would allow him to address the teams need at OLB and DB with the top 2 picks and then use the acquired 2nd or 3rd round pick for a OG/C, WR, or RB.

It seems that this draft is loaded with defenders, especially in the back 7. The 2012 draft seems to be the time that we can reload the oline.

I'll leave exact names to others, since I'm not really a college talent expert.

But I do know what the Lions greatest needs are and it’s not DE.

I'll take a great CB or LB

Over a Awesome DE

by Lionsfan8 on Jan 1, 2011 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

I agree...

and the problem with a guy like Bowers, is that he is not a Suh kind of guy. Look at the car care bowl, UCF shut him down. Suh was game planned for against Texas, and he was unstoppable. If he was, I would be ok with taking him. Patrick Peterson isn’t even a Suh kind of guy, because Anukamura i arguable better, or at least equal, and not in the sense that McCoy was equal to Suh.

LB, DB, C/G all the way.

by lions_sucker on Jan 1, 2011 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

Nobody is Suh

I meant...

in the sense that in my opinion, Peterson is a Suh type player, a “can’t fail” type pick. Bowers has had one solid year, and even then, he isn’t a lights out dominant player.

Someone tell me this.

Isn’t B.P.A. nothing more then subjective opinion, and best guess, and in no way shape or form in any stretch of the imagination based on scientific fact?

So when someone says, “oh we have to take Bowers, because he will be the best player on the board at 10”, that is nothing more then a complete bullshit guess?

So why take a guess at a position that we don’t really need, over another guess at a position that we do need?

LOL...It's going to be a long drawn out battle over draft choices then.

At least at 10 or so were not going to be hamstrung into taking a position based upon if that position is worth paying the ridiculous amount of money slotted at the draft position……and yes I realize things will change this off season with rookie compensation.

get ready for the Draft Season.

This place goes Crazy, round draft time. I haven’t even thought about it yet. Gotta get through the regular season first. And Get this Last WIN!!!

We will cover all the possibilities backward, forward, front-side left-side up-side down-side right-side and Backward.

Once we know the Draft order. there will be 1,623,845 “Mock Drafts”…..
And to even think of Draft Day…. WOW, During a normal game thread (1st Half and 2nd Half), we get a little over 2,000 comments. Sean can correct me if I’m wrong, But I remember last Draft we logged close to 10,000 comments through the 7 rounds. My mind is spinning already.

GO LIONS!!!!! SCREAM LIKE A DRUNK GROUPEE!!!!!

by delusional on Jan 1, 2011 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

BPA is

Taking the player highest on your draft board. If someone that you’ve got going #1 is available at #10, you’ll probably take him over the #11 CB that fills a glaring need.

The difference in guessing at need vs. not-needed is that you are can potentially get a player with a much higher ceiling.

Oh Yeah!!!

by hb.koolaid on Jan 1, 2011 5:39 PM EST up reply actions

Although positional need is part of the evaluation.

ie. It is unlikely you will see the Lions pick a QB in the first or second or third rounds. Every team should have a slightly different board based on their particular needs. I don’t believe any team just rates everyone, then takes the top person on their board regardless of what they have or have already chosen.

by NorthLeft12 on Jan 1, 2011 6:29 PM EST up reply actions

I knew the answer but I asked the question for this reason.

BPA is basically bullshit football speak, and a teams need comes into play in their evaluation of a players rating, so no matter what teams like to pass off as BPA is not much more then drafting for positional need.

The only legend around here is the one that exists in your own mind.

It is also B.P.A.

In terms of how Mayhew, our coaches and our scouts have them graded in regards to the player profiles as they relate to our teams scheme and philosophy. So the Lions B.P.A. may be totally different from any national perspective. In the 1st Rnd the team will be looking for an impact player no position except QB should be ruled out,as we may lose Avril via the FA market.

I thought being lazy was a bad thing, So I gave up thinking.

Jeff Fisher may return the favor since we snatched up KVB and lure away Cliff

And fat albert will likely end up back in Tennessee to open things up for him.

No..doubt it

1 Jeff Fisher may not even be in Tenness and 2 They didn’t even want Vanden Bosch we did not steal him. From floating on twitter ect I have seen Cliff wants to return to Det.

A DE Would Seem An Odd Choice

However at this stage I have quite a bit of faith in Martin’s draft acumen. If he goes that route there is the possibility of trading one of our DE’s for an OLB we desperately need. My guess is Avril. if signed, would be the only viable trade option in that case. I doubt Turk or LoJack have enough credibility league wide to have that kind of trade value.

We draft DE 1st round, he turns into a stud. We trade CAvril for a middle 2nd round pick. 2nd round pick SS tuns into a stud too. Man I love draft magick!

Oh Yeah!!!

by hb.koolaid on Jan 1, 2011 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

I would not like to see Cliff get traded.

The Lions spent three years developing Cliff and now that he is an every down DE we trade him for a second round pick? Are you kidding me?

I believe Mayhew is a lot smarter than that.

Yes, I would hate to see Cliff trade

I think he is the kind of player that you want on your team. He knew he had weakness in his game. But he put in the work during the offseason. And if you look at the stats. He is one of the better 4-3 pass rushers in the league.

Mayhew has more flexibility in this, his 3rd draft than any previous draft.

The Lions were locked into Stafford and Suh. This year, with Amukamara and Peterson gone, Mayhew can trade up, or down, and position the Lions to get CB Brandon Harris, a high 2nd rounder.

The draft-and-trade option is also a possibility.

It’s going to be a hoot!

by mikeyclaw on Jan 1, 2011 6:29 PM EST reply actions

why would both peterson and amukamara be gone?

There haven’t been 2 CB’s taken in the top ten picks in like 10 years.

Sure, if we win tomorrow and move down to 14 then yeah, we might miss both.

People are doing that thing

where they act like the draft is basically academic, and that there won’t be anything strange or surprising whatsoever. It happens every single year.

by Trysdor on Jan 2, 2011 2:44 AM EST up reply actions

Avril would be a loss no question

I just threw that out there as a possibility if a DE is far and away the BPA when the lions are on the clock. Mainly saying that if that happens and we draft a DE my bet is Mayhew will have something up his sleeve.

J P

by Justan Oldfart on Jan 1, 2011 6:55 PM EST reply actions

As far as the draft goes

I think the only position that we can safely rule out is QB. I can see them drafting Nick Fairley (though I’m not sure if he fits the scheme) if he is there, DeQuan Bowers, Pat Peterson, Amukamara…the list goes on. I guess after two drafts where we picked right at the top, its gonna be a little weird having to wait to pick a guy…

unless cliff gets a fat albert style contract offer (which he wont) he wont be leaving detroit. it seems like the whole team is having fun but you can tell the d-linemen are having more fun than anyone out there….i think you would have to be crazy if you were cliff to leave what already is one of the top d-lines in the league…plus he will get PAID here no doubt about it.

by 989Till'Die on Jan 1, 2011 11:10 PM EST reply actions

If KVB is getting $6 mil per year on average

what can cliff expect to get? He is improved, but he is facing the RT (an inferior pass protector vs the LT) and IMO not on par with KVB yet.
