New LB Corps?

Now this may sound stupid to some of you, but what if we were to replace our whole LB corps and trade both Ernie Sims and Julian Peterson for draft picks? See, getting a 3rd for each Peterson and Sims, while dropping Peterson's monster contract, would be of tremendous help to this rebuilding team. Wonder who we would get? How does Joey Porter and Antonio Pierce sound? These two guys have as much left in the tank as Peterson and Foote, and they will come at a cheaper price. We could then keep Levy at WLB, and possibly groom Follett to be our MLB in a year or two. I think Levy-Pierce-Porter is even better than the combination we have right now of Levy(or Sims)-Foote-Peterson. In such a deep draft class, we could get guys in the third round that would be first or second round talent in a previous draft.

Tell me what you think. It is just a thought, but I would love to see it happen.

What if.........

We traded them both, got no more than a 4th for either, and then no decent LB’s wanted to sign with us? A team starved for talent will have just lost 2 solid LB’s, and created more holes. No thanks. Like Schwartz said, we want to acquire more talent, not get rid of the talent we have.

Dude

that totally could end up happening in the scenario

We would end up with Levy, Dizon and Follett with no back-ups.

Awesome!

Rebuilding since 1971

Yep that pretty much sounds like Lions football. My 1st game was at Tiger Stadium as a kid in 1971. They were rebuilding then and it seems every season since then. What has always frustrated me about the Lions is that they fix one thing and spring a leak somewhere else the next season. Fix the offensive line, release the starting RB, fix the secondary, release starting defensive linemen ect…ect….The closest they ever got to a complete team (solid in every position/w some depth) in the modern era of the NFL was the 1992 team.

Hells no

Peirce has some serious mobility issues at this point in his career, and is a serious coverage liability on every down. As for Porter, he’s a career 3-4 OLB and only plays selectively. I agree with GR were trying to become young and accumulate talent not add the final pieces to a puzzle, to make a playoff. If were spending money in the FA market it should be on the lines and secondary, not blowing up an area that was a strong suit last season.

LOL 2x

oh the thought.. we would be the laughing stocks of the league… not good after a credible step up from last year

GO LIONS in 2010! the transformation starts now.. they have much to do.

NFW

That’s – NO FUCKING WAY! I don’t want a worse Larry Foote, which is exactly what Pierce is. Both are terrible in pass coverage, but I’d rather have someone who wanted to be here. As for Peterson and Sims… I’d like to really keep both another year and then evaluate them at that time, but if we are going to make a move, I’d like to extinguish Peterson’s contract if we can get a 3rd for him, nothing less. Then we’d have at least Foote, Sims and Levy on board.

I 2nd that Emotion!

If we could of got Pierce when he was 25 I’d be all in favor. But a Buldging disk ? All he’d do here is join Stanley Wilson, Bullocks and Drew Stanton on the typically unable to preform list.

If it comes down to it.......

How do you know Foote will re-sign without getting a multi-year deal from us? And Peterson was far from special this year and Joey Porter would have no problem playing our SLB which blitzes more than anything. Pierce was in the Pro Bowl a year ago so obviously he has some talent. He has had more production than Larry Foote has had and he wouldn’t be asking a multi-year deal. I think we could get both of these guys to sign and if not, we keep the guys we have. Peterson’s contract is atrocious so I would like to see them ship him off if at all possible and we shouldn’t bring Foote back simply because why should we give a 30 year old LB a multi-year deal?

by lionsman81 on Feb 13, 2010 11:08 AM EST reply actions

The point is...

The arguement isn’t that Pierce wasn’t a good linebacker, he was an amazing talent.. Is he still talented? That question would be better answered if you could answer. Is he healthy? From most reports thats debateable…They said he had buldging disks in his back…Im not a doctor or a GM of an NFL team. But common sense says that buldging disks in the back is not very condusive to playing Middle Linebacker in the NFL…nor is a long term contract. The guy has been playing football now for most of his adult life and it’s finnally caught up to him.

What is wrong with you???

For the last two season before this one, we were stuck with a shitty core of LBs, now that the management gets a very solid core, you wanna trade them away for dog shit??

by Latif Masud on Feb 13, 2010 12:29 PM EST reply actions

How is this dog shit latif?

These are PRO BOWL players! Joey Porter is still a double-digit sack guy and Pierce was supposedly healthy enough that if they had not put him on IR, they were going to bring him back had they made the playoffs. Foote is going to be gone because we do not want to sign him to the multi-year deal he wants and Peterson is due roughly $10.6 million this season, and it is highly unlikely he will re-structure his deal. Depending on Pierce’s health, this could save us a lot of money and improve our LB Corps whether you see it or not.

by lionsman81 on Feb 13, 2010 2:36 PM EST reply actions

well...

Look at porter’s number in a 4-3 defense…i believe it was his first season in Miami. Antonio Pierce has been banged up quite often. Not to mention both of those guys are old. THey would be 1 or 2 year solutions, not long term. Simms has been great for us…people seem to forget that. To throw away a young top 10 pick, who has lived up to where he was selected for a 3rd round pick doesnt sound like a good stategy to me. I agree that we should look to move peterson if the right deal comes along, but I wouldn’t move Simms for anything less than a 2nd rounder. Plus, I don’t think Foote will resign with the Lions. I see him in NYG

Peterson's been to Pro bowls too

And does Foote suck? Looks good to me, leading tackler, good leadership, etc. And what’s wrong with a multi-year contract, if the price is reasonable? We’ve done worse. Tell you what, if we sign Pierce and Porter, THEN we can worry about whether to get rid of Foote or Peterson……….not before. Don’t hold your breath, though……not gonna happen.

Porter is a cry baby

not to mention being past his prime…..and Pierce is not as good as Foote. Bottom line….we need to build on what we have, not look for addition by subtraction.

we need a good vet who cares about the city. i dont know how many times i caught my self cheering for foote last season i think we need to keep him around. he is a great leader they need to pay him his money……..HE wanted to finish his career here i think we should let him.

If you could get Clevelands 2nd Rounder for Peterson

(Which isn’t happening) and got Sean Witherspoon with the Draft Pick i would not be opposed to that. (Again this is an extremely high fantasy)
