Geography

Hello all, I don't post on here very often, but I read it just about everyday and some recent comments made me a little curious. I know that there a couple of members down in Georgia (as mentioned in the If Stafford Fails post, but I was wondering how many others live outside the Detroit/Michigan area. My reason for the question is because I myself live in Los Angeles and people out here know within 10 seconds of meeting me I am from Detroit and support all things Detroit/Michigan.. typically I get made fun of (mostly good natured) and especially for rooting for the Lions

So I guess I have two questions. 1. Are there a lot of other readers from outside Detroit/Michigan &  2. If so how do locals react to your support of the Lions.

Anyway, sorry for this not being team or draft related but thanks for humoring me.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Pride of Detroit or its writers. FanPosts are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable fans.

Cedar Rapids, IA here

There are tons of Packers, Bears, and Vikings fans around here, but very few Lions fans. I don’t have any ties to Michigan, I just came aboard during the Barry years.

San Francisco...

Lived for about 20+ years in the D. I got a bunch of Detroit related tats so people know the I support Detroit sports. There are alot of transplants out here. So I get a bunch of different fans that I meet.

At work we just got a new guy. He transfered from Chicago. When I was introduced to him. I did not say: " Nice to meet you." Or " How are you." No the first thing out of my mouth was " Christ, your not a fuckin’ Bears fan are you?"

Most people just shake their head and pity me when I talk about the Lions (which is quite often, even when there is no football on TV).

Lions fan across the pond

I just recently moved over to the Netherlands (about an hour south of Amsterdam) and I check this site DAILY!! Helps keep me close to home. They are more interested in soccer and speed skating here. I say american football and they just look at me like a lost puppy. Crazy Dutchies, haha.

Temecula, CA

I find I get alot of respect for being a Lions fan (or maybe it’s pity). I think that it helps that I am an Informed Lions fan, (thanks guys) but people seem to have respect for a Hardcore Fan of an unpopular, non-local team.

I also have a group of 5 other Lions Fans that I’ve met at various sports bars around town. And the last half of 2009 we all chipped in for the NFL Sunday Ticket. We plan to do it again next year, and hopefully add a few new members to the Pride.

I am a Canadian from Corunna [just across the St. Clair River from Michigan].

I was born in Windsor so I am a Detroit fan except for the Red Wings.

Surprisingly, there are not a lot of Lions fans over here. I know of two; my brother in Windsor and a guy I work with in Corunna. Could be I don’t know a lot of people.

By the way, a break from all the draft talk is very welcome.

Originally from Detroit, just on a deployment here in PI.
The locals dont know much about football over here, and ESPN’s version of “Sport” (no “s”) is formula one racing and billards.

When the college season was going on, I would catch a game on Balls (sports network) on a tuesday, three days after it aired, so that was that.
My only hope of watching a Lions game was through the NFL Game Pass.

The other Americans over here all complain about when their teams only go 9-7 and i tell them they have nothing to complain about, I’m a Lions Fan! We are striving for mediocrity!

In my battalion alone we have about 250 people from Mich. So it’s alot of fun. You would be suprised how many people that are fans of different teams want to see the lions do good. Except for the NFC North people. We even have a CPT that used to play for the Lions . He was a LB. His last name is Ramsey, but I cant remember his first name. But nomatter what I wish I was home.

Champaign, IL

I have no connection whatsoever to Michigan…..I’m from Illini country and went to Univ of IL and work here now as well….so you’d think I’d be a Bears fan, but I actually can’t stand the Bears or any other Chicago teams. I’m a diehard Lions fan, I just got hooked on Barry and the ‘91 team back when I was a pup and grew up loving Herman Moore, Barry, Spielman, etc. during the 90’s. I was a kid and loved the Lions logo and loved Barry, and the rest is history. I know, not much of a story, but what can you do. I’ve been to tons of Bears-Lions games in Chicago and the infamous “take the wind in OT” game down here in Champaign w/ Morningwheg…..and I’ve recently been to a couple games at Ford Field, I love it.

Same as others have said, most people feel sorry for me when I tell them I’m a Lions fan, and the first thing they ask is “why” or “how did you become a fan”…..but I still wear all my Lions gear out and about to represent our team. Someday things will turn around. I can’t wait until people stop pitying us and we start kicking ass – I really believe we’re finally on the right track, we’ll see

There are two types of reactions:

1. The person has no real idea about American Football. As far as they know, it’s just a bunch of guys in pads and helmets playing a slower variation of rugby. The Lions means nothing to them.

2. A fellow NFL fan who usually follows one of these teams- Patriots, Colts, Ravens, Broncos, Giants, Eagles, Panthers, Steelers etc etc (the better teams). From this person I usually get laughs and ridicule for my Lions fandom. However, they are usually happy to see the Lions win and will congratulate me on the victory.

Actually, comparitively, the biggest Rugby players are only the size of DE's

They are on the field for 80 minutes with very little stoppages, it’s hard to be too big when your playing both offence and defence.

Rugby League season actually starts in a month or so, my beloved Tigers are hoping for a playoff birth this year, after just missing out 3 years in a row. If any of you guys are bored and happen to stumble upon some rugby league on the tv, I suggest watching some of it. It’s a fantastic sport.

I think I'll look into it

When I caught it at the bar I was like “I want to play this” but alas, being average height and weight never bode well for athleticism.

Hopefully I can find a feed or something, and adopt your team as mine, haha

I used to watch some on ESPN years ago

Why do the refs wear raincoats? And what are they wearing underneath?

Fun game. Sorta like “smear the queer” on steroids. Take 3 steps, punt, get decapitated, then watch some other fool do the same thing. Jolly good fun.

There's the difference

There is two types of rugby. There is Rugby Union which is the form most people know. The one where you kick a lot and there is large scrums. Popular in New England from what I hear. However, I follow Rugby League. League is a slightly faster more streamlined version of rugby. There is slightly less kicking and the scrums are very different. The game is built on speed. I encourage you guys to watch if you can. I’d love to talk some league with you guys during the down periods of the Lions offseason.

I think it’s even more fun than playing football. You don’t have to be that big to play, you just have to be willing to hit, take a hit, and bleed a little bit. You have to be in good shape though, because you get gaaaasssssseeedd after running around so much.

My wife and I had never been to this state before we moved here. We did reasearch on the Internet for jobs, economy, taxes, etc in coastal cities in Virginia, N. & S. Carolina, and found that Wilmington offered us the best chance at a fresh start. We love this state, and wish we would have done this a long time ago. I’m going to miss baseball, though. The folks down here seem to root for the Redskins, or the Panthers, and that seems weird in and of itself. I always enjoyed the POD, but now more than ever since I am a displaced fan. This site rocks, and am discovering a new appreciation for my Lions fan bretheren. there are more Lion’s fans on POD that aren’t from Michigan! Kind of refreshing and makes you feel like the Lions are a “real” football team and not part of the NFL – Div II… :o)

by DrewsLions on Feb 17, 2010 3:01 PM EST reply actions

It would kind of make sense

Those of you still in Michigan are undoubtedly surrounded by friends and or family that are Lions fans and get to talk about the team. You also probably get to listen about them on sports radio and get information much faster. Those of us outside of the state or even outside the Detroit area need a Lions family to commiserate with and this provides us that opportunity.
Hopefully sometime in the near future we get to celebrate on this site too.

by Lostincali on Feb 17, 2010 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

True...

but you’d be surprised. I actually find it very hard to find people that have the same passion for the Lions around here. Granted, I don’t live in Detroit (I live in a smaller Mid-Michigan town), but still…. I’m willing and able to jaw about the Lions 365 days a year and those type of fans are actually hard to find locally. Most are fairweather fans that aren’t really in tune with the day-to-day or are seemingly unaffected by the Lion’s outcomes all-together. That’s why I’m surprised that some of the most passionate fans I’ve ever “met”, live in locations other than Michigan.

by DrewsLions on Feb 17, 2010 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

I am surprised as well

It makes sense that the Lions fans outside of MI would be passionate (otherwise they would probably cease to be Lions fans and pick up the local team), but I am surprised at the numbers. It will be interesting to see the results of n4ry4’s poll.

Utah is actually kind of interesting for football fans since there isn’t a local team. People are fairly evenly split between SF and Denver, with a little of just about everyone else represented.

You are so right drew!

It’s hard for me even in Saginaw Mich to find a true die-hard Lions fan. Even in my 2 fantasy leagues with some of my oldest friends that were at 1 time die-hards, they would rather watch Nascar and take a nap watching all the left turns than talk about our Lions. I guess after Barries departure most of them lost heart. They still watch but only to talk smack about our futility from the last decade. Personnally it kills me.

Austin, TX

Moved down here a few years ago. Winters are awesome, it’s like perpetual spring. Summers? 100+ for two months straight his past one. I miss the snow, but not in February.
I’m sick of most Cowboys fans, especially their constant whining about Romo. I haven’t really heard anyone say something supportive about the guy, and they think they deserve a Super Bowl every year. I empathize more with Texans fans, they’re usually pretty cool.
Typical conversation about the Lions:
“You’re a LIONS fan??”
“Yup.”
“Seriously???”
“Oh yea.”
“But they suck!”
“Yea, thanks, I know.”
“Why are you a Lions fan?!”
“I grew up around there, they’ve just always been my team.”
At this point they usually shake their head, and whistle or chuckle or do something else that makes me want to choke them.

by TX Lion on Feb 17, 2010 7:42 PM EST reply actions

When they give you that response...

I think you should go with your gut and just seriously consider just choking them right there. I HATE the Cowboys and their fans. Ranking teams for me based on pure hatred… Cowboys rank 1st, then Packers, then Bears, then Vikings, then every team but the Lions. So basically, I love the Lions and hate everyone else in an exponential fashion.

The dude's Australian

It’s not like he has a home team to root for

by Kalzilla on Feb 28, 2010 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

I hope that comment was in jest.....

I am allowed to have a second team. There is no rule that declares otherwise. It’s not like I buy Colts merchandise, I just barrack for them against other teams, obviously not the Lions.

Don’t you think Gunther Cunningham could do a great Gunnery Sgt. Hartman impression? I could totally picture him giving him this speech to incoming rookies!

by TX Lion on Feb 28, 2010 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

me too!

I just moved to Austin last summer. I couldn’t find any decent place to watch games in town (most places were too expensive or didn’t have sound available for the game). Do you have any leads?

by sgdbw90 on Mar 1, 2010 4:12 AM EST up reply actions

There's a couple good sports bars on 6th street

but again, you might not find very good prices. Check the specials for “Champions”? I think it’s called. It’s one of the first bars on your left heading from I-35 down 6th.
I live in a town called San Marcos, it’s south of Austin, so I normally just go to a tavern with the NFL ticket and 2$ Lone Stars. You’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere that’d put audio on for a Lions game down here. Maybe Bdubbs with their portable speakers, but that’s about it.

I lived in Detroit for 28 yrs. . Moved to Sarasota FL 10 yrs. ago. Yes my friends razz me about being a Lions fan, but not to much. I'm 6'3 230 lbs.

I was a bouncer in detroit for 5 yrs. so the fun at my expense (or the Lions) stops pretty quick. The Bucs sad chain of events has also loosened things up around here as well. Being from Detroit has its privliges too, they think we all carry CCW.

London, Ontario

surprise…but actually soon to be in Toronto as i just accepted a new job starting March 1st as a marketing manager.

as far as reactions…“i can’t believe you have the guts to wear that jersey”….“wow, you are brave”

my response to those…“when the lions do win, you will remember me”.

at the end of the day i am an eternal fan of the underdog, and the lions have been just that since i started my fanhood.

Living in Baltimore now...

Grew up in NYC (with a few other pit stops), I’ve never lived in – or really near – Michigan, but have been a Lions fan for as long as I can remember.

I usually just get a nice “I’m sorry” type of look anymore.

Milwaukee, WI

OK I’m actually back in MI now, but I lived in Milwaukee for a few years, and that was interesting, as you can probably imagine. Wearing a Lions jersey in Wisconsin is a surefire way to have strangers yell random insults at you. The worst though was when people just couldn’t shut up about how sorry they were for you. “A lions fan? God that must be terrible. I’m so sorry.”

Definitely wanted to slap somebody a couple times.

Detroit!

But currently in Indiana for another year. Can’t wait to be back home and away from the 2nd most annoying fans in all of sports (with the Bears of course being the first).

Just as a sidenote, Indiana is a hellhole and is probably best avoided.

NASHVILLE

I lived in Lansing for most of my life before moving to Nashville a few years back just in time for the Schwartz hiring ;) well 2 years before the hiring but I get made fun of plenty here as the lone Lions fan but with the Titans struggles lately, I get to poke my fun right back at them. Their die hard Titans fans and they take it to heart whenever I insult their team.

I wear my Lions gear loud and proud and it’s always a good way to meet new people and new fans. Just the other day, I met the former Titans player Kevin Dyson who was a yard short from winning the Super Bowl against the Rams a few years back. He saw me wearing my Calvin Johnson jersey and thought I was crazy but we exchanged laughs and found out he coaches this high school team not to far away from where I live. He really liked my insight being a coach and all and invited me to some games.

So being a Lions fans has its advantages despite being the laughing stock of the league for the past how many years.

Im from Zona

there was no team there when i was growing up and Barry was the most amazing athlete i had ever seen. So I am a Lions fan for life. I live in San Diego now. people always just talk shit to me so I guess thats my story.

Have you been back to Arizona

To see their amazing stadium? I drove out there from LA a couple of years back.. The game was the worst I ever saw..Lions lost (go figure, although they were 6-1 going into that game)…i think they had negative rushing yards.. and I think there was like 3-4 turnovers per team.. but the stadium was incredible.

by Lostincali on Feb 28, 2010 9:58 AM EST up reply actions

I was at that game

drove out just for the game. my buddys dad has season tix. The stadium was incredible. I agree worst game I’ve seen. I was gonna go to San Fran this year. Glad I didn’t.

by Waitingfortheroar on Feb 28, 2010 6:49 PM EST reply actions

I wanted to go to the SF game this year too, and am happy to have had other responsibilities that kept me from going… although I still want to make it up there or down to San Diego to see the Lions play sometime.

by Lostincali on Feb 28, 2010 10:38 PM EST up reply actions

let me know dude

I live 5 mins from the Q in SD and I would be down especially if I could get some people to come with me. Chargers fans love to talk trash to single opposing fans. lol I mean I have never lived in the D so I can’t say I wouldn’t be ruthless as well.

West Palm Beach, Florida

I grew up in Battle Creek, then lived in the U..P in Marquette. Then Kansas City, Dallas, LA, San Francisco, Milwaukee, NYC, Wilkes Barre PA, and lastly WPB.

I am a Lions season ticket holder, and fly back for most of the games. I still have family in Mich so it forces me to come up!

Just give me 25 guys on the last year of their contracts; I'll win a pennant every year....Sparky Anderson
