Tuesday Notes: Lions' Tags to Go Unused This Offseason?

  • Martin Mayhew doesn't believe the Lions will use any tags this offseason to keep free agents in Detroit.  According to Tom Kowalski, the Lions do want to bring back the likes of Larry Foote, William James, Jon Jansen, Casey FitzSimmons, and Will Heller.  None of them are simply big enough names to use a tag on, though.
  • Mayhew is excited over the fact that this year's junior class for the draft is one of the deepest in quite some time.
  • Jim Schwartz talked a little bit about how important it is to get a rush from the defensive tackle position and how that can make the entire defense better.
  • John Niyo has a list of the local players who have been invited to the NFL Combine later this month in Indianapolis.  The full list of invites can be found here.
  • More pictures of Matthew Stafford have ended up on Deadspin, although I don't really know why these latest ones are even worth posting considering they're just regular pictures of him with his girlfriend.
  • Want Barry Sanders to come to your house and watch the Super Bowl with you?  Well, look no further than eBay, where there is an auction that will make that possible.  The proceeds of the auction will go to the Jimmy V Foundation.
  • A few people from SB Nation are in Miami for the Super Bowl.
  • The ratings for the Pro Bowl went up 40% this year, making it the most watched edition of the game in a decade.  I think it's safe to say it will continue to be the week before the Super Bowl in the future.
  • Mike Martz is headed to Chicago to be the Bears' offensive coordinator.  That should be interesting to watch.

Not sure why pictures of Staff and his girl friend are of any interest to Lions fans.

The guy is our QB, we don’t own him. What he does on his own time is his business. This reeks of stalking to me.

Totally agree.

Much more interested of pictures of Tim Tebow’s girlfriend.

We don't own him

Like you could with Barry Sanders. I think that auction is up to $3800.

That would seriously be a dream come true

With Barry’s" off the wall "personality I could only imagine the craziness that would go on. lol

ive always said....

……gettign a rush form the DT is the most important position on the defense……Pressure in the face……Schwartz knows his stuff….Hes the man!!!

Wow...

….I mean from not form and getting not gettign

by BennieBladesFan on Feb 2, 2010 9:20 AM EST up reply actions

Absolutely!

The defense should affect the quarterback first, and if that fails, prevent the reception, then lastly, MAKE TACKLES! It is a lot easier for pass defenders to make a play on a hurried throw. Would love to see this happen.

DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!

Surprised..

I thought Will James was solid. Foote as well. They should let go of Buchanon and Henry.

by xanderjd on Feb 2, 2010 10:08 AM EST reply actions

and they shouldn;t

neither are worth top 5 $$$

The beginning of the end of the misery

by latif on Feb 2, 2010 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly Sean...

…..these guys wont get franchised becasue they wouldnt be worth the contract they would get….No way foote is worth 8 or 9 mil for one year and thats what he would get, maybe more, if we franchise him.

by BennieBladesFan on Feb 2, 2010 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

And if they don't resign

the Lions will get compensatory picks for them in the 2011 draft

by JazzyBBP on Feb 2, 2010 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

Possibly...

….it all depends on who we sign and how well all the players do.

by BennieBladesFan on Feb 2, 2010 5:17 PM EST up reply actions

Hunter

Is a long list of people that is a RFA or ERFA

by severs28 on Feb 2, 2010 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

Buchanon

I think they should resign him. He adds depth to a position lacking constancy.

Martz and Cutler should be a good match

The Bringers of Hope: Stafford - Delmas - C. Johnson - Pettigrew - Levy - Hill - Schwartz
Zack Follett: he will hurt your mind.

football outsiders' aaron schatz did some final cb rankings

biggest surprise? leigh bodden a top 10 corner… i just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
tomorrow he is running through the worst corners in the league and i have a strange feeling that there might be a few lions making an appearance

Bodden was always a good corner

We just had him in the worst possible scheme for his skills.

by Trysdor on Feb 3, 2010 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

Not to mention a d-line

Consisting of DeVries, White, Redding, and… who else? Shaun Cody?

I was definitely an advocate of keeping him. Lions made a mistake there, IMO.
