Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

A Question (Opinions wanted)

Given the unsettled financial climate in the NFL, with no collective bargaining agreement in place (uncapped year, etc.), and statements like the one from Tom Brady ("We're way overpaid"), does this set the stage for some of the most contentious rookie contract negotiations ever? Could it even effect who the Rams draft?

Star-divide

KDawg and I did research last year on #1 overall selections dating back over 5 years (by the way, we nailed Staffords contract right on the head long before the numbers leaked out), and what we found was a nearly precise set rate of increase for contract values for the #1 pick regardless of the position (OT, QB. DE) the #1 played. Now, if you are a player's agent, how do you represent your client for less than what the guy last year made? On the other hand if you're ownership, how do you justify handing out a huge contract to a guy in the current economic climate? I wonder if it could end up effecting who the Rams draft and perhaps bring out a darkhorse for the #1 pick based on contract requirements versus pure talent ratings. I'm simply curious as to how you guys think the current economic climate, combined with an uncapped year and historical contract markers may be set to play out. Thanks!

I agree

Teams always collapse. Look at crabtree. I also think this could steer them away from taking a QB just because he would get paid more probably.

You have to.

Not having a contract signed cost the Raiders a season.

by CLF on Feb 3, 2010 7:51 AM EST up reply actions

they really need a rookie salary cap

this is over the point of ridiculous…its insane.

Its a nice thing you pointed out…the Rams aren’t in a good financial situation, so that could definitely influence their decision on who to draft, especailly when there is a talented DT who should go no 1

+1 - A rookie salary cap is needed

The Bringers of Hope: Stafford - Delmas - C. Johnson - Pettigrew - Levy - Hill - Schwartz
Zack Follett: he will hurt your mind.

Why does "deserve" keep coming up in this issue?

It’s America. We have homeless geniuses and rich buffoons. “Deserve” has nothing to do with anything. Matt Stafford is an employee and Detroit Lions are an employer.

They are not bound by any HR restrictions on Rookie Pay, so they pay what they want to pay.

by HoorayForEverything on Feb 3, 2010 12:28 PM EST up reply actions

I could have said that different

I guess my point is why does a unproven guy like Matthew allowed to make more than a multi time MVP like Peyton manning. I just don’t think that the leauge should permit that. If they pay him 42 million than it should garuntee manning has to make 100mil. It just seems that the money being given to these rookies should be divided up amongst the veterans. I think the salary cap for rookies will help the league and keep more players employed as well. This is in now way personal like I said I love staff I wanted to pick him sense day 1.

Peyton Manning

DOES make more than stafford IN FACT he has a

$99.2 million, seven-year contract

RESEARCH IS FUN

by IAmGross on Feb 3, 2010 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

OH

and a 34.5 million dollar signing bonus, which is almost as much as mattew will make AFTER the extent of his original contract

by IAmGross on Feb 3, 2010 5:23 PM EST up reply actions

Read it again

I never once said HE DID! I said he was allowed to. I just use matthew as an example. At this rate someone will if no cap is put in effect. I have heard that is the only thing the CBA negotions have agreed on is a rookie salary cap. Look at the garanteed money compared to ELI the highest paid QB in the NFL right now.

Player Total Value Guarantee Guarantee Rank
E. Manning $97.5M $35M 5
Rivers $98.3M* $38.15M 4
Stafford $78M** $41.7M 1

That means bust or not apperently he earned it?

Its kind of a double edged sword.

If they draft a dark horse to get the contract terms down, they risk allienating the fans if its a non-big name draft pick. they may save on the contract, I am sure not by much, but your the ticket sales may suffer from it. As you stated, even if its a dark horse, the agent is still going to want more than last years #1 pick.
If they pick the so called for sure talent, they will pay for sure talent money. This may sell more tickets, but is it enough to offset drafting the higher for sure talent.
I have stated this before, the choice for the Rams is not going to be easy. Do they draft a franchise QB, or do they draft Suh. Adding the ecomomy into it just makes it that much tougher. The only way I see the dark horse card in this senario is if the Rams are truely trying to tank the team to get them out of St. Louis.

Good post TC

My questions are:

1) Will the Rams pick a QB or will they trade down because of their poor financial situation?
2) Will any team in a better financial situation want to trade up to #1?
3) Will the Rams take less than usual in order to trade out of the number one pick, simply because everyone knows they are in a bind, or will they hang themselves and pay #1 pick money if they can not get a blockbuster trade done?
4) Will the current economic situation of the Lion’s organization (paying big money last year for Stafford) force them to trade down from pick 2, or will old man Ford pony up and draft the big name player if he is there at pick 2?
5) Will the Lions stay put at pick 2 and draft a lesser player who will sign a economically friendly contract at pick 2 (thereby alienating US and pissing off the Pope himself in the process)??

The list goes on and on……..

I don’t think the Rams will shell out more money than Stafford got to a DT…..that is for sure.

by KDawg on Feb 2, 2010 8:58 PM EST reply actions

Kdawg...

People can’t trade out of #1 anymore. Especially if there is no Mike Vick in the draft.

Suh signed with Eugene Parker( Crabtree's agent)

The talk from the Rams site is that if Suh goes #1. Parker will want more than what Stafford got. And maybe the Ram’s FO will not sheel out that kind of money for a DT

The other problem is that the Lions can not discuss contact with players until they have drafted them( I believe this is true).

good and bad i guess

Lions are pretty willing to pay their draft picks (thats an understatement), and the Rams don’t wanna pay, so that could land us Suh, but we would looking at another big contract

by Latif Masud on Feb 3, 2010 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

just a question?

Is it possible to trade out of the number one spot before the draft? That way the team that gets into the #1 slot is able to make contract negotiations prior to the draft similar to what has gone on the past few years with Stafford, Jake Long and others? Don’t ever remember it happening, just curious.

by nestDC on Feb 3, 2010 9:39 AM EST reply actions

Good question

Here is my logic on that…..I would assume that teams would be allowed to NEGOTIATE a trade of the #1 pick BEFORE the draft, and the team moving into the #1 spot could POSSIBLY negotiate POTENTIAL contracts with the player/players that they would target with that draft pick, BUT I do not believe that any agreement involving the trade of the #1 draft pick PRIOR to the draft for THIS year’s draft picks could be BINDING until the draft begins and such said trade became official.

That said, the Rams could also negotiate a contract with the player/players that they are thinking about drafting with the #1 pick. However, they also CAN NOT make those contracts official until the draft begins and their draft pick is official. Last year, we negotiated POTENTIAL contracts with Matt Stafford, Jason Smith, Aaron Curry, and others…..however, the contract with Stafford was not officially binding until after the draft (I believe), because all he really did was agree to the terms of the POTENTIAL contract prior to his selection by the Lions with the #1 draft pick in the 2009 draft.

Lastly, after the Superbowl, when the offseason officially begins for all teams, FUTURE draft picks CAN be traded up until the end of the free agent signing period (I believe). Therefore, any team could potentially trade their 2011 first round draft picks for whatever consideration they deem acceptable during that time frame. If anyone knows better, please feel free to say so…..all of this is off the top of my head.

by KDawg on Feb 3, 2010 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

I know better, so I'm saying so

The #1 selection can be traded officially at any time once the draft order is set. The team which has the #1 selection is free to draft and officially sign to a contract, whatever player they choose from the time period after the Combine until their time expires on the clock in April. So after the combine is over, St. Louis is officially on the clock, with the right to trade the pick, or draft and sign a guy.

Here’s the quirk.

Let’s say St. Louis takes Dumbo Jumbo, P, out of BFE State #1 overall, signs him to the contract, and they are married happily ever after by March 12th. The team with the #2 pick IS NOT ALLOWED to draft the guy they want, or talk contract with them until the NFL has its beauty pageant for the #1 overall pick at the start of the draft.

Everyone wave, do your Miss America wave, stroll down the Red Carpet. Yeah, gay but true.

  1. is only allowed to draft once the pageant is over and all the fashion designers are satisfied by the suit #1 has on display. Miami and San Francisco, I believe, exercised this early draft and sign right while drafting Jake Long and Alex Smith, respectively, when they held #1 overall in the past decade. The teams drafting #2 had to wait until after the official pageant to make their selections.

The NFL tries to discourage teams from the early draft and sign, as it takes away from the pageant drama. Some teams choose to go in this direction though, as a way to let free agents know what direction they are headed in.

Thank you.

ok, that should be #2 to start out the indented paragraph

Thank you.

by TCLion on Feb 3, 2010 11:36 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe

I think the Rams are, by this point in league history, resigned to the fact that this first pick is going to cost them dearly. Even the option to sign a “lesser” player “at a discount”, isn’t all that much of a discount. Agents will be driving up the pricing and playing off the labor uncertainty to try to get the best contract for their clients, but I think teams already know this. Ownership might try to push back a little using the same selling points, but it’s probably futile. Really, the player holds most of the power as the team just wants the damn player on the field doing what they drafted him for. What might get more dicey is the verbiage and clauses in the contract and the contract lengths. It’s tough for teams to know exactly how the new contracts will impact their teams financially when the parameters of the new CBA are unknown at this time.

But back to the Rams… all things considered, I believe they will still take the best player available. I’m not sure it’s in the best interest of the club not to. Are you really saving that much by taking a LB or DB at one overall just because you might be able to negotiate a better rate? My guess is the extra money is worth Ndamukong Suh. I think the Rams will see it that way too and take him. Suh will get a worthy contract at number one… no doubts there. I think the bigger question is who will be taking him there? I think the Rams are more likely to try to trade out rather than take a lesser player for a lesser contract. If they want to get out of it that badly, just trade down by offering less cost to the tradee. I doubt that it will happen, so my money is still on them to take BPA… which is Suh.

What will be interesting for the 2011 season (if there is a season), is if one of the big bargaining points – the rookie salary cap – is instituted. This will change the draft as we know it…. for the better, IMO. Good discussion topic, TCLion.

by DrewsLions on Feb 3, 2010 1:36 PM EST reply actions

I didn't mean "rookie salary cap"....

I meant the mandatory payscale for rookies.

by DrewsLions on Feb 3, 2010 1:59 PM EST up reply actions

Another Question I have.....

I was wondering, the last “uncapped year”, the year of the Reggie White sweepstakes, before the salary cap initially went into effect, all players signed that year their contract amounts never counted towards the salary cap for the duration of the contract. Does anyone know if the same operating procedure will be in place? Could it make this year the Julius Peppers sweepstakes?

Thank you.

by TCLion on Feb 3, 2010 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

Here's the questions the Rams will have to ask themselves..

Is a QB and a DT worth the same amount of a “X” contract? What happens in 2011. If there is a “rookie cap”? What scenario would the Ram’s FO feel more comfortable with? A potentially good DT having a 80 million dollar contract? Or, a potential franchise quarterback making 80 million dollors? At what point does BPA verus contract come into play?
