What current Lion's Players need to go???

We all have our goats, the players we feel like have held the Lions back.  Mayhue's first and best move as GM was to trade Roy "Part-time" Williams for picks in the draft.  What current Lions are need to be traded or cut in an effort to make the team better?

1.  Gosder Cherilus-  One of the worst rated linemen in football, with a penchant for untimely penalties.

2. & 3.  Drew Stanton & Daunte Culpepper- Both are injury prone and one needs to be put out to pasture.

4. Philip Buchanon-  Defense 1st- He's terrible! Returnman 2nd- He's worse than on Defense.

5.  Calvin Pearson- He had 3 good plays- at the end of the 2008 season- 0 in 2009

6.  Jerome Felton- He can't block, for short down it's a run for a loss,(aren't those prerequisites for NFL FB?)

7. Grady Jackson- He's big and He's old - he's already shown Sammie Hill all of the best buffet lines in Detroit

Those are my picks to improve the team by trade or by cutting.  Honestly, the only one I see with any value is Jackson.  At least players have to take an extra step to get around that big body of his!

Buchanon was probably our best CB last year.

Especially in the second half of the season. I don’t think we can afford to dump him.

And give Gosder a chance. New scheme which he took awhile to pick up. Let’s see how he does this year.

Felton is still a work in progress too. He made some plays when they did use him. If his blocking improves he could be a solid part of this offence.

Right...

I don’t think we can afford to get rid of average talent. Buchanon would have been a depth guy on most rosters, but because ours was so bad, he was a starter. Buchanon would be a solid nickel guy or first off the bench on the outside. Should he be a starter… no. But I wouldn’t scrap him just yet. Really, we can’t afford to….

As for the original post… yeah, most of these guys shouldn’t be relied upon, but do we have a choice? That the crux of the problem. Guys like Backus hang around because we can’t afford to replace marginal players because we have to fill the glaring holes first. If we had better alternatives, yeah sure… go ahead a release all of the above. But until we do… we need this marginal talent to get us by. Sorry, but it’s the sad truth and shows the depth of the roster rot.

You don’t ditch current starters for backups….. you upgrade thru the draft hoping that the new picks weed out the weak backups.

The problem is...

as someone also referred to previously, is the coaching and scheme changes. Let the guys who are entering their 3rd year and 2nd in the same scheme have a chance to grow and evolve within the scheme. If they (Cherilus, Felton, Ksmith) fail then cut them.

As far as Philip Buchanon goes, he is a solid corner(especially compared to what we do have) and if healthy and playing up to his potential can be a starter on a lot of teams still. I don’t get the negativity towards him and Will James, they aren’t Derrell Revis or Charles Woodson, but they are good depth/starters in a pinch players.

As far as the others go, I’d like to see us revamp our reserve QB’s, maybe get a Chad Pennington and perhaps keep Patrick Ramsey, getting rid of Stanton and Culpepper. Grady Jackson is a zero impact kind of player at this stage of his career, as he only plays in like, 1/4 of defensive plays and isn’t super effective when he is in, so cut him for some younger talent. Kelvin Pearson can go either way, he is a decent special teams player, whatever value that holds.

Cherilus

Has to stay…..he improved last year and will be fine in his 2nd season in the scheme.

by BennieBladesFan on Feb 20, 2010 12:39 PM EST reply actions

keep phillip and Gosder

Phillip got better I think his 2nd year in DET will be much better. Cherilus is stll very young give the guy time. Culpepper should go let give drew one more year to prove himself than his contracts up anyway. I would add Hobbs and Rameriz. I think Grady has to go pearson either way I could care. I would only say northcutt if there was a upgrade or Williams was getting his spot. I’d keep felton he seemed like a good shortyardage runner.

Sounds good

We should be able to pick up a huge NT replacement for Grady in the mid/late rounds or an UDFA.

This post is a little ridiculous in one area

If we released these guys, who would we have to replace them??? I mean with there being a no capped system it seems for free agency, your not looking for anything really better.

Cherilus- Stay, and he will because one he is a high draft pick and like others mentioned give him a chance to stay in the same system for another year, he was improving towards the end of the year.

Stanton/Culpepper- I admit i was a fan of Stanton but between being injured and having a bad start when he was in, got to go. Culpepper SEE YA.

Buchanon- He will stay, he is a decent cb when healthy and James is decent to. Sure they both didnt play up to us the way we wanted but they are not utterly terrible either.

Pearson – I could care less. I will say that he is a pretty good back-up or rotation player

Felton- just HELL NO, he is a good fb when he gets the chance. Sure he isnt schlesinger with his hardcore style of blocking. He isn’t built that way cause he is a runner and reciever first and a blocker second.

Jackson- Ill just say that he should be cut be he wont. He is a transition signing where it gives experience and provides time for the development of younger players. Sammie Lee Hill earned his starting role this year but what if we didnt have a guy like Jackson to help him along?

Keep Felton he is still young but make him a HB not a FB he can’t block well enough. Grady Jackson can go for all i care he didn’t show enough to make me keep him for size. Keep Stanton he is a Backup leave him at backup. Cherilus is still young keep him for another year or two at least. Cut Pearson. Cut Will James. Cut Northcutt. keep Buchanon but get better CBs in here please

Don't agree

Cherilus = Stay, still young.
Stanton = Stay as a backup.
Culpepper = Pack your bags.
Buchanon = Stay. Still decent.
Pearson = Stay. Decent backup.
Felton = Stay, still young.
Jackson = Stay, could help with the young DT’s, plus, still takes up a lot of space.

The Bringers of Hope: Stafford - Delmas - C. Johnson - Pettigrew - Levy - Hill - Schwartz
Zack Follett: he will hurt your mind.

My List Revisited

Thanks for all the posts! Just some thoughts and clarification. I said TRADE or cut. Cherilus is one who is young enough you might be able to get something for him. Coaches & Schemes? Play football. Make good decisions. If I’m Mayhew and I could get two picks for him, he’s gone!

Felton- I thought the only good point here was play him as a HB. He’s a fullback. He’s supposed to block. He’s supposed to pick up first downs. He doesn’t do either. Trade him for a draft pick!

Buchanon- I recant. More talented than other options. Not a return man.

If your only arguement for keeping a player is he’s still young, then you have committed to a tradition of losing. Every position needs to be viewed as can we upgrade with a trade or with a trade for draft picks?

1 more thing- Don’t just trash my list- Post your own! I really wanted to see what other fans who watched game after game the last two seasons thought about the players we have observed!

Thanks again for the feedback on my list. I can’t wait to see what happens next year!

I don't think you would get a draft pick for Felton

He is ok, but if you even got a 6th for him it would be amazing.
