Monday Notes: Lions to Operate Under Self-Imposed Cap
- Even if the NFL doesn't have a salary cap in 2010 and possibly beyond, the Lions will impose their own salary cap to make sure spending doesn't get out of hand. That being said, Tom Lewand made sure to point out that the Lions will "spend what it takes to win."
- It's looking more and more possible that Kyle Vanden Bosch could hit the free agent market next month.
- Drew Stanton put up a new post on his blog about what he has been up to lately down in South Florida.
- Kevin Smith is also down in South Florida (the University of Miami, to be exact). His reason for being down there is to continue his rehab and work on regaining flexibility.
- Jim Schwartz was interviewed by Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole.
- Mel Kiper would be surprised if the Lions don't draft a defensive tackle with the second overall pick.
- My thoughts on Len Pasquarelli's report that the Rams are leaning towards Ndamukong Suh are that it is only February and we haven't even had the combine or pro days yet. That report very well could be the case, but it doesn't mean much this far from the draft.
- Bill Ford Jr. is quite the pond hockey player.
- John Niyo thinks the Lions will start the season at home for a change.
- Former Lions assistant Joe Cullen doesn't even remember his infamous naked trip through a Wendy's drive-thru.
- ESPN put together a very interesting piece about Myron Rolle, who could be a potential Lions draft pick in April.
- Matthew Stafford's latest AXE Hair Action Challenge commercial is out and can be seen below. He is definitely living the life.

Myron Rolle is freaking awesome
Though after seeing what playing DB in the NFL does to a guys hands (there was a piece on inside the NFL on it last year) I don’t think he will be a neurosurgeon after the NFL.
I hope we land him. He and Delmas would make quite a pair.
He would be a nice compliment to Delmas
And we all know how much we need some consistency opposite Delmas.

Love that interview with Schwartz
It really shows what the draft is gonna look like.
If we stick with that rather than saying, ‘Hey we need this piece, we need to get Player X at this position,’ then you’re reaching and passing other guys on the board and you’re passing talent. Maybe a really good team can afford to do that. Say you have just one hole on your team and you really need to fill that one hole; you can pass a player or take a cornerback who is maybe a step below another position. But over the long term, I don’t think that’s a very good strategy. You have to take talent in the draft.
That and the last bit.
[...]when Giants coach Steve Owen, a certified defensive genius, was asked how he planned to stop Nagurski, he said: "With a shotgun, as he’s leaving the dressing room."
WE NEED A RUNNING GAME!!!! LT or LJ...RBs With a Chip on their Shoulders
Kevin Smith is nothing more than a 3rd down back at best. Yes he has a knee injury but thats what happens when you run scared. Smith is the softest running back in the NFL period! We need a runner not a tip-toe go down on first contact back. I say draft a back early, sign Tomlinson or Johnson and a top F.A. LB then use the rest of the draft to tighten up the defense and O-line. If we can get any kind of respectful running game things will change for the better quickly. Smith needs to be relugated to insurance back status even when he’s fully healthy. I mean lets face it, he never was that explosive of a threat that teams had to draw up schemes to stop him in any kind of way. Where as a RB like LT has homerun ability on the ground as well as through the air. Imagine stafford having LT as the check down reciever to go with the other weapons, or the play action game big play ability Larry Johnson would bring with the power running 30 carry capability. Both have something to prove and it will allow the lions to really develop a young back. The offense is right there it’s the run game thats holding it up. there’s light at the end of the tunnel….TIME TO MAKE A SERIOUS MOVE!!!
LT couldn't manage 4 yds a carry behind the Chargers offensive line last year
How would he do behind our abomination of a line? Poorly, I would imagine.

I agree
LT’s best days are behind him- Let him go to Minnesota and give us Chester Taylor- He’s more versatile and a better fit.

Just stop, Staff....
…the hair action thing is a little weird. And you aren’t a good product pitcher. I love ya, bro. You’re my quartaback (in the infamous words of T.O.)….but the commericals for AXE have got to go. Do Vizio….do Nike….do something else where you don’t have to pitch verbally. ;)
GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!
I don't know
