Leigh Bodden
If any player ever will serve as the personification of the disaster that the last group of the Lions front office execs called "Leadership" if would have to be Leigh Bodden.
One of the best man-coverage CBs in the NFL came to Detroit and was forced into playing a soft zone built for non-athletes. He was constinatnly put in a situation to fail.
I have nothing but faith in the new leadership. I just wanted to bring up this scab on lions past and remind us all that a system should be designed around the players you have, and pieces added accordingly not forcing expensive round pegs into square holes.
Boddens States just for salt:
2007 Browns (man defense) 6 INTS
2008 Lions (cover 2) 1 INT
2009 Patriots (man defense) 5 INTS

still would have been the best corner we had if he was in the right defense
I never though Dre Bly had much of a hsot of suceeding here either because the used him improperly.

I just wanted to say I have faith that the new management wont force players to play against their strengths
for example, making an undersized but fast DT play NT when everyone on earth can tell that he should be a UT…..lol

I agree
that was one of the things that always infuriated me w/ Marinelli and his damn son-in-law……I always said that Bodden could have been a player here. They were just too dumb to know how to use him
Bodden's time at the Lions was unfortunate
He is a talented Man Cover player.
The Bringers of Hope: Stafford - Delmas - C. Johnson - Pettigrew - Levy - Hill - Schwartz
Zack Follett: he will hurt your mind.
Did he get released by Schwartz
Or did he leave on his own?
they told him
that they weren’t going to pay him his bones and w8 to last minute to cut him.. so he asked if he could be now to get a head start and they did.. but there is still a chance he is back
They released him because of an $8MM roster bonus due
I said it then and I’ll say it now… it was a mistake to let him go. Was he worth the $8MM… probably not. But Detroit sometimes has to overpay to get good players to stay. Our secondary would most definitely been better with Bodden and I believe he would have had a good season. In fact, they probably would have signed him to a long-term deal this year and that would have been one less player to draft.
Can you imagine if we had Bodden and Delmas, then drafted Berry and Kyle Wilson? Nice…
Drew drew drew
I don’t care if we had 2 Dion Sanders’s,and who ever you want to put as the best safeties back there. When you are forced to cover people for more than 6 and 7 seconds on virtually every play cause the line can’t get no pressure, it just doesn’t matter.
I agree with that...
But…. our secondary would be set. We could then focus on the defensive line. Even then, we could bring in Aaron Kampman and take a DT in the third round. Not at all saying the D-Line isn’t a priority… I’m just saying that the secondary would look awfully nice with those four back there……………..
point taken
And I kind of knew what you were saying but since I just got back my internet (ty charter) I got alot of smack talking to catch up on…. lmao bro.
Hey
I have been saying this for awhile now, but since you are just getting back I will say it again. You do not have to have a great pass rush if you have a great secondary…..to still have a great pass defense (look at TB’s pass D last year for example). You do not have to have a great secondary if you have a great pass rush…….to still have a great pass defense. The door swings both ways. We can get a great secondary AND upgrade our D-line a little……and still have a great pass defense. Or we could do it the other way around……get a solid pass rush and upgrade the secondary a little. 6 in one, half a dozen in the other……draft the BPA regardless of positional need.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

That would have been nice....
I can’t seem to get around the argument that “we do not need 2 great safeties” back there. The “we already have Delmas, why do we need berry too” argument. Can anyone name a historical Super Bowl caliber team that had 2 GREAT safeties at the same time?
I think it could be a precedent if the Lions drafted Eric Berry……how could it hurt us to have shut down help over the top on both sides of the field? That said, I still think the number of options is so great that it is hard to draw a clear conclusion. Suh might be there at pick 2…..we might trade down…..we might take Berry over Suh……we might trade down with Seattle and get Haden and Dan Williams…….so many options.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
I'm slowly warming to Berry at #2...
if Suh is gone. The thought of those two at safety is pretty darn exciting. Do we have more pressing needs? Yeah… but it’s all about talent and the more I see of Berry, the more talent and the more special I think he is.
the closest thing I can think of
is Didn’t the 49’ers have Mertin Hanks and Ronnie Lott at the end of that run for them in the 80’s. And I beleave the Bronco’s had A couple of snot knockers at the same time as well. If we stay at the 2 spot we should get Suh,I can’t see the rams spending another top pick on a DT with Howie longs kid there and it wasn’t the rams D that sucked last year it was NO QB and a “who are you” set of rec’s. I personnally still want us to trade out of the 2 pick and get the other safety, butdidn’t I say that about 2 months ago when we knew we were out of it.
Good calls.....
Atwater and Dennis Smith……awesome combo too.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
Rare combos though.....historically speaking
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
John Lynch/Dexter Jackson
Prototype of the Cover-2 safety combo
[...]when Giants coach Steve Owen, a certified defensive genius, was asked how he planned to stop Nagurski, he said: "With a shotgun, as he’s leaving the dressing room."

They were pretty good
Not sure i would call them great, or put them on a pedestal with Lott/Hanks or Atwater/Smith.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
Same here partner
I’ll give you Lynch all day long but not Jackson he was better than average but wasn’t special like the other 2 tamdems mentioned. There was 1 more tandem but I’d have too think about it for a min. and they played for the 70’s steelers. The one thing that these 3 sets of safeties did have in common was they all had great front 7’s in front of them and some better than average corners playing with them as well. But the front sevens on those teams were off the hook. Didn’t the redskins have a couple of stellar safeties playing at the same time back when they were in their hay-day???? But you are right REV it is very uncommon for there too be 2 dominant safeties playing at the same time…….
