A good off season to need a running back
My opinion: Kevin Smith won't play in 2010, they are going to IR him and give him the entire season to rehab. I'll give you two reasons why, 1st his age he'll be 25 at the start of the 2011 season which is middle aged for a running back. 2nd because all the names that will be looking for work.
Tomas Jones: Very good chance he will be cut looking for a starting role.
Larry Johsnon: Will be looking for a starting role or just a job.
Chester Taylor: Will be looking for a starting role, a little old but not alot of tread on the tires yet
LT: He's a little run down but still good for 10-12 carries a game
Westbrook: Smaller back runs in the same area of LT good for 10-12 carries
Daren Sproles: May get released, shifty younger back can't carry the full work load but can also return punts and kicks.
Reggie Bush: Long shot but unless he redoes his contract it will be tough not to release him. Saints need him and he needs the Saints, a deal will get done.
I think we will sign one of the first 3 to a two year deal with major incentives. We will draft a running back in the later rounds or not even one at all. I've read now a couple times from different writers on how Aaron Brown will be our home run threat, and that is why we will not draft a speed back in the 2nd or 3rd rounds. My only thought would be if Gerhart or Blount started to drop maybe then we would take a value pick by drafting them.

KS will be back this year!
I think Kevin Smith will be back halfway through the season. Hopefully we’ll pick up someone like Chester Taylor for the 1st half of the season.
I'd rather have Larry Johnson or Westbrook.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
LJ
When his head is on straight, he is a monster, and with his rescent (last 2yrs) history his legs have to be in great shape. Add in the Gunther factor wanting to bring in all these ex-chiefs and Walla we have a RB that can be a 3 down guy and run wit power and speed up the middle. Chester is my second choice because he has a ton of tread on his legs, 3rd choice woud be Thomas Jones so he could stick it to the BEARS twice a year!
I'd be happy with one of those guys.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
Kdawg...
Please tell me you are kidding!
LJ or Westy over Chester Taylor? 3 years ago yes. Now no!

Why Capitol?
We are talking about a guy that was disgruntled the last few years in KC, Now he’s finally outta there and no matter where he goes he is going to try his ass off in order to get a big fat contract the following year. You add that onto his legs have basically had 2 years off and he could easily be the stud he was 3 to 4 years ago.
Not kidding
Especially about LJ……he is only 27 and he came in and looked pretty solid for the Bengals last year, just like I said he would (then). He is exactly the type of back we need…..a grinder who can run between the tackles and pick up short yardage. Westbrook is not just a RB. He is also a GREAT receiver. His versatility is enough to get a look in my book. Chester Taylor had 6 seasons where he had better than a 4.0 YPC average, leading up to last year’s 3.6 YPC effort. He has been a career backup, who WAS good enough to start for a couple of seasons in Minnesota, until they got AP. His best season was the year before AP was drafted, when he had 303 rushing attempts for 1216 yards and 6 TDs, with 42 catches for 288 yards. He was arguably even better in a backup role when AP was a rookie, as he had half as many attempts and more than half the yards he produced as the starter (844, 5.4 YPC).
Tell me that Chester Taylor is going to get over 1000 yards in Detroit on 240 or less carries…….I don’t see it happening. Now, if he were a legit threat as a receiver as well, like Westbrook is, then I would say hell yeah. If he were 27 years old, I would say hell yeah. He is 32…..and he is not a receiving threat out of the backfield. He may very well be solid still, in a backup role……however he is just another Maurice Morris if Kevin Smith can’t go at the beginning of the season. That’s my opinion.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
I say Taylor really because of the career carries
Most people would agree, shelf life on a RB is about carries, not years. Taylor have over 400 Carries less
And career average per carry is 4.4 vs 4.3

chester drawers (taylor) is still young enough to be a every down back and effective enough as well. I think Kevin will play this year though It might not be right waya but he will play by mid-season

agreed
weird, of those guys, I’d say Jones, Bush (for return game), Taylor, Sproles—in that order.
Taylor good—soft hands (40 or more in half his seasons), pass blocks, looked more effective than AP at times (often would mistake who was running—which is surprising cuz AP is such a beast).
Westbrookster is done, son. Absolutely done if you watched him play this year. I think the concussions have gotten to him. He was a great back—but time to hang it up. Also note that when LJ left Chiefs, their running game exploded with Charles. Also, LJ is a prick.
I say Taylor in a timeshare. I would look to draft one too.
And now Sproles is thrown into this equation
I know he’s not the every down back that we need but talk about top end speed…..woooooooooo NELLLLLYYYYYYYY Sproles has it.
a good season??? who is your dealer??
yea its a grate season for them if you want him to be 30 years old with 93246571239589 attempts
LT is done and westbrook has head/neck issues
while there are some backs that have some value, I think a gem is more likely to be found in the draft than a FA
I don't think they will give up on Smith yet,
If your only looking for a one year gap till Smith comes back then any one of those 1st three backs would do fine for one year. Nothing past that.
Younger and talented...
seems to be the way that this Lions admin is headed. I wouldn’t expect any big splashes in the RB free agent pool if they think at all that they can get something decent in the draft. As for Sproles, Bush, and an aging Westbrook… we already have a change of pace back that actually performed fairly well in his rookie season. Aaron Brown and whatever we can get with our cap/draft picks is worth more than whatever we would have to spend on any of the guys listed above. If we are going to spend 5-7 mil a year on someone, how about a receiver that will help us keep CJ in town?

We need a RB that can pass block
Aaron Brown won’t get much play time until he can learn to pass block better.
Brown is a horrible blocker lol

We need a WR or 2
way more than a RB at this point. I think with Stafford, Megatron and ‘Grew we have the makings of a nice pass heavy team. We should get WR’s that can produce, and some OL that can excel in pass blocking. Take a flyer on Westbrook or Chester Taylor – good pass catching RB’s and give it a go!
Just livin' the dream...
expect a rb signing
in a few days…… the free agents signed will let us know the draft direction…. RB and a DT… a lock?
GO LIONS in 2010! the transformation starts now.. they have much to do.
You know what...
I’m kinda warming up to the idea of Bush here…he would give us a new our offense a new dimension
The beginning of the end of the misery
please
NO REGGIE BUSH! unless he is going to play the same role he did in the black and gold. PR and 3rd down back. and only if he’ll do it for less money!

chester taylor is the only rb the lions should goafter in fa that would make min use a draft on a rb in this year draft go lions .
I'm liking Thomas Jones
Larry Johnson
Lendale White(screw you guys, I trust schwartz’s opinion over yours)
But overall, I believe the Lions are looking at Spiller and Iupiati and that’s the motive for trading down.
If the Lions end up with these 2 players…. I will…..
CLF
I agree with you here…..T Jones, LJ, LenDale White……I would like any of those 3. I am of the opinion that Westbrook is still a viable weaopn too, maybe in a lesser role than he had in Philly.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
you "jizz in your pants" agree?
LOL
(Did anyone click the “I will…”???)
Funny stuff, I’m a fan of Lonely Island.
There is no "I will"
At least not that I see……lol. I am confused.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
White would be
a very good pickup. Never had a chance this year in Tennesse with C. Johnson running crazy. He would have something to prove! I wouldn’t hate the Reggie Bush pickup either. He has great speed and could be a Johnson clone. Never really had a chance to be the man in New Orleans(mostly due to injuries). However, he ran real hard in the playoffs, hell even up the middle.
I really don't understand the Kevin Smith hate
Ok, maybe it’s not quite hate, but no one gives this guy ANY credit. In an 0-16 season the guy ran for 1000 yards. He has a great attitude, a winners mentality, and he’s definitely talented. He wants to win. He WILL be back this year, (in my opinion) ready to start taking carries week 1.
He’s a great back and I hope we see him produce for us for years.
He WILL....
Miss most, if not ALL training camp. What a great opportunity to train up a new RB.
The Lions have to keep upgrading when given the opportunity…. this is the perfect opportunity. If KS is not ready to go, the Lions will be in a world of shit. Just look at the Cowboys… if one goes down, they could care less.
I definitely agree with all of that.
It just seems like the prevailing sentiment is that Kevin Smith is some washed up bust or something. Sure the guy had a major injury last year, but he’s certainly not going to be out all of next year. He’s an extremely young, hardworking, talented back who is going to bounce back. Yeah, he’ll probably miss OTAs and whatnot, and I definitely agree we could use another back, but I’m personally a fan of Mo Morris, and if we could use Felton as a RB instead of a FB or draft someone like Blount, I’d be 100% happy with our backfield.
I like your thinking Nate
esp on the Felton to RB, NO lineman is going to want to tackle that monster 30 times a game….. and imagine after he gets throu the front 7, that would be a safties worst nightmare.
LT good for 10-12 carries a game? No thank you. Our money could be spent much better, on an every down type position.
I would love Sproles or Bush as a RB2, punt/kick returner. Both are great for screens, and catching out of the backfield.
yes.
if we sign one of these RBs, make them full time PR and KR. We so badly need help in the return game. I don’t mind shelling it out for a dedicated return guy (who can also play RB!?).
Also, if these guys can catch—they will be very effective in our short passing game. Both are deadly in that respect.
Willie Parker
I was hearing rumors that the Steelers aren’t interested in bringing back Willie Parker. I believe he has a chance to sign with the Lions just as much as the mentioned above.
www.prosportsdraft.webs.com
Agreed
If we go FA for a running back I’d like to see Parker or Chester Taylor. Similar types of guys, hard working workhorse style.
Not saying parker wouldn't do OK
But he has already lost a step, that’s why he lost his starting spot in Pitts’ last year. o do we really want him??? I’d rather see chester cheeta orMr.Jones; LT; LJ over him. Sproles is who I’d like too see the most but we don’t need a speedster we need a workhorse.
True
Parker may be the only guy outside of Chester Taylor willing to sign with us. He has maybe more question marks then the other veterans..LT or Westbrook so he can be had for a much lesser price tag and may produce equal or close value. I like Sproles as a player but he’s just not the type of back the Lions want for the price he’s asking for. Totally not worth it that’s why the Chargers let him go. He got more carries this season then last but still didnt get close to 500 rushing yards despite LT’s struggles. His value comes at slot and as a returner and not worth the money his agent is asking for.
www.prosportsdraft.webs.com
Good point Calvin.
The sad part is we could use one of those as well, refering to a slot rec/return man, I just think you are right the money is too high.
I'm starting to realy think that's it's inevitable that we will draft or sign a FA RB
I thought we might’ve gone through this offseason and relied on K-Smooth healing in time. But now, I think a new RB might be on the cards.
The Bringers of Hope: Stafford - Delmas - C. Johnson - Pettigrew - Levy - Hill - Schwartz
Zack Follett: he will hurt your mind.
Here's the problem:
All these guys, with the exception of Sproles, are veterans at the end of their careers, and none of them has won a superbowl. Unless we wildly overpay them, I don’t see any way that one of them would want to come to one of the worst teams in the league, even if they get to be the clear cut number one guy. Any of these guys would probably take significantly less money to play on a contender.
Sproles, being younger, may be willing to come to Detroit, but since he’s currently the only free agent starting-caliber back not at the end of his career, he will get other offers, and we’ll probably have to overpay him.
As a Lions fan I would love to see us get one of these guys, but quite frankly if I was in their shoes there’s no way in hell I would come to the Lions.
Sproles isn't a starting caliber RB
If he gets more than 200 carries a season he will break

Which is another reason I advocate for LJ or LenDale White
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
I'm scared of LenDale White
He’s done nothing in his career. Granted he’s been overshadowed by the Flash, but I just don’t feel like he would contribute enough to be worth it. LJ… maybe, but he seems like he causes more headaches than he’s worth as well.
Give me Chester Taylor, Willie Parker, or draft me a bruiser. I’d be all about White if we got him for next to nothing, but that isn’t going to happen.
My first choice would be to draft Blount in the FIFTH round.....
If that can’t happen, then bring in LJ, Chet Taylor, White, Fast Willie, and all of the rest of them, work them out, and sign the one we like best……
My gut says that would end up being Larry Johnson. I am SO tired of hearing about “character issues”!! DAMN THAT NOTION TO HELL!!!
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
Let's all take a breath for a moment and think.
With all these RB’s available they are all going to have to play whereever they are lucky enough to land, It’s apperant that SD beleaves they have LT’s and Sproles replacements most of the teams in the NFL already have at least 1 Back that they are committed too, these guys are not going to get the kind of money that you are all talking about just for the fact that there is so many of them available this year. How many teams out there really NEED a RB? The Lions do, No one else in the North does, In the East Who needs a RB? No one that comes to mind really fast. What about the West Seattle but no one else. You look at the South Maybe TB but everyone else has at least 1 young back already. Now AFC East Buffalo is a possible and maybe even the Jets but I don’t think so there, you never know about the Pat’s. I can’t see anyone in the South needing a RB Hou is set Indi/Jax/and Tenn should all be good. In the North I could see Clev picking up someone but Pitt has Mendenhall and he should be the primary guy there that and Pitt doesn’t usually pick up free-agents they grow them theirselves, Cinci seemed pretty happy after last year and Balt is set with Rice. Now the West is where you could see some action with SD letting those 2 go you never know, Denver should be set with Mareno and others, OAK well you never know with Al davis, And then KC seemed pretty happy with that one back from last year but you never know. SoI can’t see these FA getting the kind of money you all seem to think they are going to get thats all
Gerhart sleeper if that's possible
I am hoping that we can get Gerhart – not sure if that’s possible. The speed issue is WAY overated…especially for a team like the Lions
