New and notes from the combine
Today is by far the most boring day of the combine. As much as it is funny to watch 300 pound man running a 40 yard dash it isn't that applicable to their success in the NFL. I watched the offensive lineman over the tight ends (who would be much more fun to watch) because the Lions have much greater need for a lineman after the pickup of Brandon Pettigrew. Three players caught most of my attention during the workouts.
1. Russel Okung came into the combine as the undisputed highest rated offensive tackle in the draft. He did nothing to change this view (unlike Andre Smith did last year). Okung looked strong in drills and had the second highest amount of reps in the bench press (38). After the combine I think it is safe to say that the Okung will be picked high in the draft unless he completely flops during his pro day.
2. Mike Iupati was a little disappointing. I have not seen him very much mostly because Idaho doesn't get very much national exposure. I really have only heard great things about him and I was disappointed in his numbers. Numbers really don't mean that much with offensive lineman compared to film, that being said I still would like to have seen him put 225 up at least 30 times. However this might be a blessing in disguise, he might fall into the second round where the Lions could snatch him up.
3. The most impress combine performer of the day was Bruce Campbell. He looked very athletic (32 inch vertical and a 4.85 40) and has the prototypical frame of 6 foot 6 and 315 pounds. Before the combine he was slated as a late first round pick with a lot of upside. After today I wouldn't be surprised if he was the second OT taken. Jason Smith proves that the NFL is moving toward more athletic tackles to counter the speed rushers prevalent in the NFL I doubt that the lions would get either of these tackles but mike Iupati is still a possibility.
Tomorrow the QB, RB and WR will take the field.

It wouldnt hurt my feelings if we take o line any where in the draft
Just keep Staffro off his back please. he can sling it but not with a 320 lb guy on top of him.
Suh weighed in at 6'4 307 today
12 pounds heavier than Gerald McCoy at 6’4 295. I found this interesting as I thought they were both around 295.
Campbell
Since when do you see linemens run a 4.80 40! Looks like Al Davis has already locked up his first round pick. I was hoping their was some way he would fall into the 2nd but not with numbers like that. He is a sure top 10 to 15 pick now.

The Lions also spoke with Ndamukong Suh........
Not once, but TWICE! I think he is a lock for us, unless we get a ridiculous trade offer. This is very intriguing the Lions would talk to a single player twice before they even talk to another player.
I was watching NFL network today
Not only did I hear that mentioned but I also heard the Lions talked to Okung.
trade ploy?
It could just be a ploy towards other GMs who might think the Lions could go other position than DT if Rams go DT. I don’t believe anything until it’s done before the draft, expect everything.

........and so did everyone else
From the article:
Every year at the Combine, reporters will ask players which NFL teams have talked to them. This is especially true of those local guys who want to take the story back to their excited readers — “Hey, Joe Shlabotnik talked to the Browns for 30 minutes today! They traded recipes for flan and talked about the under front defense!” But the way things are set up these days, assessing team interest based on those interviews is absolutely impossible.

Hey, as long as Zack Follett keeps hitting people, he can rap to Barney the Dinosaur for all I care.
Iupati wasn't altogether that impressive
But he’s a Guard, what do you expect? Campbell looked great but looks more like a project than an immediate starter. Okung was the star for me…looks awesome.
The Bringers of Hope: Stafford - Delmas - C. Johnson - Pettigrew - Levy - Hill - Schwartz
Zack Follett: he will hurt your mind.
Is awesome......
But unfortunately, we are sold on Jeff Backus.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
Yes they are.
But I have to ask. Is it really out of the realm of possability that they take Okung, put him on the right side, and replace Backus in the future? I am not saying they should, or they will, but is this senario a possability Dawg?
And do what with Cherilus?
Seeing as the guy has no experience whatsoever at G, it doesn’t make sense. Tackle just isn’t in the cards for us at the top of the draft this year.
I want a tackle
as much as the next guy but we can’t take Okung unless we trade down right?

I think anything is possible LH.....
But i think that scenario is unlikely……personally, I don’t see gosder Cherilus playing guard. The better bet would be to see Backus move over to the right side (as a backup or to compete for the starting job with Gosder) or down to guard, with Okung playing LT. However, I do not see us taking Okung at pick 2 either……even though it would make much more sense financially to pay a LT #2 money vs a DT or S.

Any news on...
Pouncey for our second round pick or selvish capers for the 4th/5th round as guards?
capers
although pouncey could start out at guard and replace raiola next year, when we find a better guard

Don’t get gaga over Campbell.
Here is the book on him.
Amazing Athlete, decent pass blocker. GARBAGE run blocker.
I think he will end up being a TE in the NFL, and probably a decent one. But we don’t need a TE.

Today Sunday
is the day… drafted RB and WR s are running their 40’s……. who will we get or will they go Free agency…. the Lions can’t fail either way young or a vet… Thomas Jones, SProles, TAylor or a rookie ….. we’ll find out
GO LIONS in 2010! the transformation starts now.. they have much to do.
Is dorsey enough?
too… these questions will be answered soon
GO LIONS in 2010! the transformation starts now.. they have much to do.
I think IF we acquired Glenn Dorsey......
You would see a major difference between the player in Kansas City and the player in Detroit……far to the better being in Detroit. Our defensive scheme fits Glenn Dorsey’s skill set MUCH more than Kansas City’s defense does. The guy has been labeled a “bust” because he was put into a position that does not cater to his skillset and abilities. Put him back in a defense that is more similar to what he was in at LSU, and the guy could become a great player…..that is my opinion on the subject.
However, I think Suh is a superior option…….
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
I'd be happy with that as well.....
The only way i want us to pass on Eric Berry is if Suh is available at pick 2.
