Saturday Notes: Lions Meet with Ndamukong Suh Twice

  • The Lions had brunch with Ndamukong Suh on Friday and met with him again last night to talk Xs and Os.  The team also met with Russell Okung over dinner on Thursday night.
  • Martin Mayhew's draft strategy is still to select the best player available.
  • Mayhew had something interesting to say about one of the things the Lions took away from the week in Mobile for the Senior Bowl.
Apparently coaching the Senior Bowl has paid off already. Mayhew said he doesn’t want "anything to do with" some of the players the Lions coached for whatever reason – work ethic, desire, etc.
Boy I'd love to find out who Mayhew was talking about.
  • Speaking of the Senior Bowl, wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson apparently came down hard on Cincinnati's Mardy Gilyard in practice in Mobile.  Gilyard seemed to respond well to what Jefferson had to say.
  • Kevin Smith for sure won't be having shoulder surgery.
  • Jim Schwartz thinks very highly of Stephen Peterman and Jeff Backus and sees the need to find a starting left guard. (He also hinted that Backus probably won't be moving inside in the foreseeable future.)
  • Schwartz was recently interviewed by The City Paper (Nashville), NFL Network, and Sirius NFL Radio.
  • Peter King thinks Kyle Vanden Bosch will sign with the Lions.

(More after the jump)

Star-divide

  • The Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association voted Louis Delmas as the Lions rookie of the year.  Jim Schwartz probably agrees with the vote considering he recently said Delmas is the Lions' "top defensive player."
  • NFLLabor.com has put together a list of the players who will become unrestricted free agents next week.
  • It has been nearly a year since Corey Smith and his friends went missing in the Gulf of Mexico.
  • SB Nation is in Indianapolis for the NFL Combine.  You can check out a recap of the first two days here and here.
  • In case you missed it, running backs LaDainian Tomlinson and Brian Westbrook were released earlier this week, and the Chargers are going to let Darren Sproles become an unrestricted free agent.  You can bet that the Lions will be looking into signing a running back during free agency, but I personally hope they stay away from Tomlinson and Westbrook, not that I think it matters since I don't believe there would be mutual interest anyways.  Someone like Sproles wouldn't come cheap, but I definitely think he would be a nice addition.
  • It looks like New York, well, technically New Jersey, is in the lead to host the 2014 Super Bowl.

By the way

I think this is quite possibly the best picture I’ve ever used for a post. I was gonna use it as soon as I saw it, and then once I read the caption and saw that he was with a sea lion I knew it was the one. Lol

Gerald McCoy

They need to meet with him as well because he is a possibility if Suh is taken at number 1.

Berry-

Do you think they are looking at Berry?? Can you imagine Delmas and Berry in the secondary together for the next 5-7 years?? Kinda gives me the chills thinking about it!

OKung

I know the oline need help, but is Okung a #2 overall pick?

I went from 100% Suh

all the time to getting all iffy and scared that he might not have the quicks to hoping to God that Berry would run a 4.3 so his stock would rise to the # 2 spot to thinking “Shut the hell up and let the Schwartz man do his buisiness” and people wonder what being a lions fan is like. IN SCHWARTS I TRUST!!!!!

I don't get something...

One one hand the coaching staff is meeting with Russell Okung, on the other hand Schwartz is talking up Backus

The beginning of the end of the misery

BPA

Plus, he didn’t say anything about Cherilus moving to Gaurd…

by ATL Lion on Feb 28, 2010 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

lol

I can’t see that happening…..

If the Lions are truly happy with Peterman and Backus, they may be looking at Okung to come in and play RIGHT tackle, or maybe they plan to see if Backus can move to the right side to compete with Cherilus. I think that would be much more likely than the Lions moving Cherilus to guard. I also believe that the Lions may still be harboring hopes that they can trade down if Suh goes #1, and that may be why they are talking with Okung as well.

The news that the Lions are happy with Peterman would change my personal draft strategy idea a bit too. Instead of taking guards in the 4th and 5th rounds, maybe we could still take a guard like Asamoah in the 4th round, a RB like Blount in the 5th, and a DE or S in the fifth if they take Suh in the first, Wilson (or another corner) in the 2nd, and Demaryius Thomas in the 3rd. Maybe it would be possible to get a S like Morgan Burnett, Darrell Stuckey, or Larry Asante in the 5th, in addition to Blount. Personally, I am not overly impressed with Peterman as a guard……I thought he played much better as a DT…..lol.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
