Dreaming of Better Times For The Gridiron Heroes

Dreams can sometimes help us to get by the tough times that we are dealing with in the present. I myself tend to dream of hitting the big time and launching into the world of CEO of one of the greatest teams in football history, the Detroit Lions!!! Okay, maybe I am exaggerating, but it is always great to dream right?

Star-divide

I, like other Lions fans, have spent years sucking down my sorrow in the twelve ounce curl exercises that seem to dull the pains of my loyalty to fecal matter wearing Honolulu Blue. I cried when Wayne Fontes was let go, when Barry Sanders retired as a result of this, when Chris Spielman and Herman Moore moved on to greener pastures elsewhere. I saw a team that destroyed America's team in that wonderful home playoff game year's ago and I saw that team ripped apart slowly by the coaches that came in after Wayne Fontes, only to completely resemble that flaming bag of doggy treats that we used to leave on our unsuspecting Rochester Hills neighbor's doorsteps. It was this great ponderance of memory lane that had me boiling over last night as I realized that I had helped to pay for that bag of doggy treats that was left on my doorstep by William Clay Ford. Why should we as Lions fans have to wait for great product to be put on the unfrozen tundra of Ford Field? We have done enough waiting!!! It is time for the Ford family to pay us back for the years of misery they have put us through. It is an uncapped year, the Lions should go for broke now. They have a star quarterback and receiver already, why not use free agency to bring in new players and resign our restricted players that could impact the team now? The Ford family can open up their purse and bring some aspects of joy to a statethat has been on the verge of collapse the past few years with the economy swinging it's scythe towards the neck of the industry that defined the area. So, without the worry of actually using any of my own money, below is a list of what I would do to improve the team if my dreams came true and I was suddenly Martin Mayhew in this presently uncapped season.

Let's talk offense! The first player I would sign, even though many would disagree with this, is LT. Tomlinson did only have 730 yards rushing last year for San Diego, but he ran for at least 1,000 his previous 7 seasons and he still scored 12 rushing TDs last year. With Kevin Smith returning from his injury, they will make a perfect pair in the backfield. Next the Lions could sign Derrick Mason as their slot #2 receiver. Mason had 73 catches for 1,028 yards last season. A perfect target to get the heat off of Calvin. If Mason refused to sign then we could always try for TO for #2 lol. If we add another target to the lineup as the #3 receiver with Muhsin Mohammad who had 53 catches for 581 yards for the Carolina Panthers then Stafford's weapons would have become an arsenal of nuclear weapons, leaving the conventional behind. Offensive line help definitely needs to be addressed by signing RT Kirk Chambers who is an unrestricted free agent from the Buffalo Bills and drafting for RG Mitch Petrus of Arkansas and for LG Zane Beadles of Utah. The last position that needs to be addressed is that of back-up quarterback.  I would sign  UFA Charlie Batch from the Pittsburgh Steelers, so that he can come back to Michigan with his two Super Bowl rings and finish his career and also help tutor Stafford without worry of any quarterback controversy ever.

Alright, now let's look at the other side of the ball, the defense! First of all the Lions need to resign Larry Foote. He is leader on and off the field. The second person I would sign is Kyle Vanden Bosch for LDE who only had 3 sacks last year for the Tennessee Titans, but has had 12 twice in his career with big boys like Haynesworth next to him on the line. Which goes in to my next signing which may be far fetched, but this my dream so shut your traps you nay sayers. The next person I would sign would be for RDEJulius Peppers who had 10.5 sacks last year. This would propel the Lions into the upper echelon of defensive lines in the NFL, especially with the drafting of Ndamukong Suh of Nebraska for DT. Then add UFA Jason Taylor, who had 6.5 sack last year for the Miami Dolphins, to an already pretty decent Linebacker corp, and you are looking at a far better defense pressure wise than took the field the year before. But, my dream isn't over yet so let me keep going.

In the defensive backfield the Lions need a little help for Delmas, so why not sign the reliable Tyrone Carter UFA of the Pittsburgh Steelers to help him at SS. We can also try to grab Antonio Cromartie of the Chargers in a trade that they were working on as I posted this and Nick Harper who was on the Titans last year in order to sure up our cornerback positions.

So, here is what my starting team would look like taking the field next September:

QB: Matthew Stafford

RB: LeDainian Tomlinson

RB: Kevin Smith

WR #1 Calvin Johnson

WR #2 Derrick Mason

WR #3 Muhsin Mohammad

ORT: Kirk Chamber

ORG: Mitch Petrus

Center: Dominic Riola

OLG: Zane Beadles

OLT: Jeff Backus

TE: Brandon Pettigrew

LDE: Kyle Vanden Bosch

LDT:  Grady Jackson

RDT: Ndamukong Suh

RDE: Julius Peppers

SLB: Jason Taylor / Julian Peterson

MLB: Larry Foote

WLB: Ernie Simms

CB: Antonio Cromartie

CB: Nick Harper

FS: Lious Delmas

SS: Tyrone Carter

PR: Dennis Northcutt

KR: Derrick Williams

KR: Aaron Brown

Kicker: Jason Hanson

Punter: Nick Harris

The reason I have elected to go old with many of the free agents is because there are so many holes the Lions need to fill when it comes to youth, that as a GM I would elect to nail one side of the ball in the draft and in this year's  I can say that I am hitting the offensive line. After Suh, almost every draft pick will be for the offensive line. This will help protect the arm of Stafford for years to come. The addition of older vets right now, if they would even join the Lions, is to give the Lions another year so that the younger players can mature and to allow for the draft next year to fullfill the defensive side of the ball. When it comes to skill players on offense, I believe, with the exception of another exceptional receiver to help Calvin, that we already have the nucleus of youthful corp players we need to win in the future. This is with Stafford, Johnson, Pettigrew, and Smith. If you notice many of the players come I would sign have either worked with Coach Schwartz before, played with Larry Foote in Pittsburgh, or have connections to the area. I know that this roster would make us the oldest team in the league, but it would allow us to win for at least one year while we wait to draft younger players in the future. Winning is addicting and to win that one year might change everything around for the future years with the younger players. It would definitely do wonders on the persona of the Lions and might lead to better players signing in the future.  I would only sign the older vets to a one year contract if I could. I know, it is all a pipe dream! I might as well put it all in my pipe and smoke it. But, a fellow can dream right? Being a Lions fan for years, sometimes that's all you may have, your dreams. Keep up the good fight and talk to you later!

you have to build a team that can sustain time. Mason won’t play for another team he retired last year he’s a raven or nothing. LT wants a ring he will end up in orleans I bet. Vanden Bosch was great next to haynesworth without he is just above average and kampman is younger get him. Like Moose but he is getting up there I wouldn’t hate the pick up now but he won’t last. Peppers and Taylor won’t come to detroit Taylor said he wants one more season in Mia and he will retire. Peppers is sick of losing he wants to go to a contender. Dre Bly won’t comeback to detroit I am positive and I woudn’t blame him. You explained yorself well but the idea seems quite proposterus.

I would like

to ride unicorns that fire happiness out of their asses, fortunately that scenario is more likely than your starting roster.

Now. . .

I don’t care who you are, that’s funny!

by Wick22 on Feb 28, 2010 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

Question:

Is this happiness a tangible ray of joy, or is it just a sense, a feeling if you will?

The Bringers of Hope: Stafford - Delmas - C. Johnson - Pettigrew - Levy - Hill - Schwartz
Zack Follett: he will hurt your mind.

I would support

The position supported by Descartes. If there is a collective conscious that agrees upon a common entity of happiness then it has to be tangible. If something exists, it must be tangible and quantifiable. If you would posit that “Happiness” is not a tangible object than you would also support that happiness does not exist.

So yes, I would say that it is a ray of joy firing from my unicorns ass.

by KDawg on Mar 3, 2010 9:34 PM EST up reply actions

Not likely

I respect the thought process and the time it took to put all this together but I would have to disagree with most of this.

First to point out the obvious, why would any veteran want to come to a team that is rebuilding?…LT, Julius Peppers….

I can see Muhsin Mohammed or Derrick Mason because of the state ties but other then that, it’s really hard to have all that go through and would make our team one of the oldest team’s in the league which is NOT what the Lions front office needs right now.

Vanden Bosch might be the only real possibility b/c of his ties with Schwartz and the success he had.

As for Dre Bly, I don’t think he would want to come back to Detroit. He left on some bad terms and is probably looking for a Super Bowl ring far more then seeing some of his old teammates.

He left on bad terms with “MILLENS” idea of football, But If you are bringing in Mason why in the hell would you have Northcut returning anything when Mason is one of the best ever at returning punts or kickoffs?

I often ride unicorns while I'm traveling up to the top of The Great Pyramid....

and I stand there on my unicorn, asking the people to worship me and to bring on my sacrifices. That is when the naked ladies show up and start pelting me with little pickles! And the unicorn eats the pickles. Pickle juice is flowing from the animals mouth as he says in a deep more Goat than unicorn type voice……. “Johnny Damon was a great pick up for the Old English D!” And that is when I weep, because my unicorn is a Tiger fan just like me. Ah, those are the best of dreams.

Awww man you shouldn't have went there bro....

I’m still hurting from the trade of Granderson, and I’m going to have a hard time rooting for the Tigers this year with a Damn Yankee/Red Sox bastard playing in the outfield.

I would love to see the lions

spend some money on a few free agents. I cant believe that nobody is talking about signing Antonio Bryant. “Wide receiver Antonio Bryant, who caught 122 balls for 1,848 yards and 11 touchdowns while playing with five—count ’em—five different quarterbacks in two years, was deemed expendable”……I know he was hurt last year and doesnt have the best track record, but there is no doubt about his talent and he would definitely draw coverage from CJ. Add that with Derrick Williams who hopefully will be much improved this year, or a rookie speedster that can stretch the defense and our offense will be unstoppable…Assuming that we get a starting guard or tackle in the draft and a RB to complement K Smith.

The craziest part of the whole dream is that you dont have DeAndre Levy slated as a starter next year for our defense. Did you watch him last year at all??? He is a frickin stud MLB. You cant teach those instincts, just wait until he gets a little bigger. Why do you think we havent signed Foote yet? Its cause we have Ray Lewis Jr.

Im thinking we are going to be very comparable to a team like the houston texans next year. They have a prolific offense because of Andre Johnson when they have Matt Schaub healthy. We have a much better QB than Schaub IMO and an equally talented reciever…we are missing the Kevin Walter type of receiver to burn defenses that pay too much attention to Johnson. We already have our own Owen Daniels in Pettigrew. Seriously could you imagine if we drafted Dez Bryant? (not saying we should in any way shape or form, but just think about that for a second)… All we need is one receiver that wont allow defenses to double and triple cover CJ every damn play and we could outscore most teams. There is not a corner or safety that could stop CJ consistently by themselves and I cant wait to see him unleashed on the NFL next year.

here is the article i quoted about bryant

by msulion10 on Feb 28, 2010 9:41 PM EST reply actions

you are right man....

After reading the article on Bryant I think that he would be a great addition to any team maybe the Lions should look at him. As you said, we are missing the Kevin Walter type and Kevin just happens to be a free agent this year, lol. Maybe the guys in the front office should look at him also. I feel if we add that type of receiver and some players on the O-line to help out Riola and Backus, we would have an unstoppable offense. I still think that LT would be a great addition to the Lions due to his prestige and his ability to get in the end zone. I guess I’m selfish in that I would love to see another great runningback finish his career with Detroit. About Levy, I feel he will be great in the future, I just didn’t know if he was ready to take the leap yet. But, you’re right, Levy does have some talent.

why do people hate WCF

The only mistake he has made was letting Millen keep his job for so long. I know that was a big mistake but he is not the person who decides who we get or let go. He has dumped a lot of money into the lions, it was the horrible free agent signings that made the lions have the third least room under the salary cap this year. Yes just like every one else I wanted MIllen fired bad and I thought he made a big mistake by keeping him so long but don’t ever say that he needs to open up his pocket book to sign over priced free agents, that is what MIllen did and that is why we are in the trouble we are in now.

Lionsfan The problem with the cap started before Millen ever got here, I beleave it actually started back when we gave herman moore that big contract and Johnny morton then dumped both of them in a short time after that. It seems like the lions just have never caught up since then.Hell we were paying those 2 for about 3 or 4 years after they were not even lions anymore and that’s when it all started. You can just keep adding the names on to it after that.

w/ WCF he does spend money… builds us a damn nice stadium and a nice HQ with the best training enter for the Lions players…. GO LIONS…. I can’t wait for those haters to be quieted when the Lions finall get things going
