David Baas

I notice that there has been a lot of chatter of signing David Baas as a free agent this year.  I am a fan of the 49ers as well (they are my 2nd team) and I would like to educate you a little bit on David Baas.  The 49ers are very likely to sign him to a one year contract this year and let him become an unrestricted free agent next year.  If a CBA goes through they are still likely to sign him to a one or two year contract because he will not cost a whole lot of money.

While David Baas is a very good run blocker, he is also a very inconsistent pass blocker and tends to get pushed around and burned in the passing game.  Also, Baas is never really completely healthy.  This year he missed a month of practice during training camp while being injured in a nutcracker drill. In 2008 he tore a pectoral muscle in camp and underwent surgery.  In 2005 he tore a hamstring in his rookie training camp and was hampered all year. He never did start a game in 2006. In 2007 he started 8 games. In 2008 9 games. This year he started every game but was not 100% until about week 4.

Baas is an above average guard when he is healthy.  Although he is certainly not an elite guard or even a really good overall guard.  My question is do we really need a guy that is almost guaranteed to be hurt in training camp, miss practices, and have a slow start to the season on this team?

do we have a better choice?

this team isn’t going to be able be sign an elite player…Baas is young, and has potential, and would be an upgrade over either peterman or ??? (ie LG). Personally, I want the Lions to get Deuce Lutui

I think......

we should draft a LG. I would rather take a chance on a rookie than bring in an older player that will only be around a couple of years. Plus, most of the guards on the free agent market are injury prone or inconsistent. Why not take a shot on a rookie if this is all you get for a veteran?

Well that works.....

….out well because Schwartz wants to be a running team……lets sign this guy.

Calling Baas above average when he’s healthy is being generous. He’s extremely overrated.

Only by default

By above average

I mean very slightly above average. And that is only because he is a good run blocker. He is a liability in pass coverage. And yes, he is overrated and always injured! I don’t even want him starting on the 49ers, I hope they draft a guard this year to replace him.

What if...

instead of going after an OG, we pull a Leonard Davis with Cherilus and move him to LG? Then look for an OT instead or leave Jansen there while grooming him.

Just a thought.

That's what I suggested a month or so ago

Except to keep Cherilus on the right side, slide Peterman (Peterman = Baas, IMO) to LG and let Jansen play it out. I got lambasted for that, however, because apparently Jansen is worthless

2 things

Jansen is far from worthless. I think he was one of are better FA pickups last year actually provides depth on the O-Line and can compete to start. Also looking under FA gaurds I noticed another name I think he will probably get a new contract but Chester Pitts could be out there. I’d go after him if he hits the market.

Maybe on Baas

Has some potential but I’d rather draft a G. In saying that though, talent is very rare here so if he’s got any then we could use him. Trust the Schwartz!

The Bringers of Hope: Stafford - Delmas - C. Johnson - Pettigrew - Levy - Hill - Schwartz
