Why trade down?

Alot of people think the Lion's should trade down for more picks and honestly, I'm having a hard time wondering why.  At the No.2 pick they have a shot at Suh,Berry, and McCoy. Aside from Haden, who would could come in and make an immediate impact on the defense that's better than those three? McCoy is considered a prospect by alot of guys here, but I think he can come in and make an immediate impact, possibly earn a starting position.  At the top of the second, they have a shot at a first round talent if there lucky. While I agree, a couple extra picks would be nice, I don't think they should trade out of No.2  or trade away any picks.  Quantity does not always equal quality, and the lions need quality guys right now.

Anyway, just my 2 cents on the subject. Feel free to tell me why I'm wrong or otherwise.

Quantity beats Quality here

In a deep draft like this, there is a lot of Quality so it would help to have quantity. Every single first round pick could probably come to detroit and start right away aside from the QB’s and TE’s. Those are the only two positions we should think that we are set at. For this reason it should be obvious that, if possible, trading down is the best bet.

If we can get a first and second rounder with a fourth rounder or even two firsts, then in my opinion it is a good trade because that would make three players that could come here and have an immediate impact rather than just one.

You raise a valid point xander.

I for one would not trade down farther than the top eight. That way the Lions could still get an impact player with some additional picks.

I don’t like the idea of trading back into the twenties or so. The quality of those players is well below that of the first five or six.

ie. Suh/McCoy/Berry/Haden/Okung vs Iupati/Odrick/K. Wilson/B. Graham/N. Allen

I like all of the guys in the second group, but only if we could get them at #34. I would not want them to be the top pick in this draft.

agreed

I agree you don’t want to drop down too far. I should’ve been clearer about that in my comment above. In order to get the right value we would have to drop down somewhere in the top 10 and get the other teams 2nd and 4th at least.

well...

Delmas was a 2nd round pick, and he was an impact player last year. I think it totally depends on the Lions scouting to decide if they can get a quality player late in the first round.

Stafford and Delmas are greatness........you don't trade down from greatness

Good thing we didn’t trade down for the Dirty Sanchez and Patrick Chung.

How many of you would rather have Sanchez and Chung than Stafford and Delmas??? (facepalm)

An extra pick or 2 won’t make up for that. If greatness is there, you take it! We have plenty of picks.

Quality beats quantity here. Don’t be impatient, don’t try to fix everything at once with 50 average players.

The main reason for the trade down....

…..this year is because this draft has so much deep talent…Ie 2nd 3rd and 4th rounds……If we could pick up a extra pick or 2 in those rds it would be awesome as far as getting more quality players.

by BennieBladesFan on Feb 9, 2010 9:19 AM EST reply actions

I agree BBF

Personally, If Suh fell to us I would be happy to offer him to Tampa for the #3 pick and their third and fourth round picks.
Then, we get McCoy or Berry plus two other players. Potentially two starters where they would be picked.

by NorthLeft12 on Feb 9, 2010 10:14 AM EST up reply actions

Exactly....

…I would make that trade in a heartbeat.

i dunno...

Not that its a bad deal, but Suh is so damn hyped, I would think some other team would be willing to give more

Well Yes...

….if someone offered more then you would make that deal in a faster heartbeat

I was projecting a minimum trade offer to Detroit.

If Tampa only offered the #3 and their third round pick, I would have to think about it.

I'm not saying it

Quality beats quantity. Greatness beats mediocrity.

Average players are a dime a dozen, and we already have plenty of picks.

It comes down to trusting that Mayhew will find quality WITH quantity

This team is wretchedly thin on talent. Sure, a Suh or McCoy or Haden will probably help this team immensly. But if we want to be a contender in ‘11 (if there’s football) or ‘12, they have to increase the net number of GOOD players. If we can fill 3 voids with 3 good players or fill one position with 1 exceptional player, I think logic suggests that we get deeper and more talented. That doesn’t make sense to you? With free agency so uncertain, this draft might just be the most important in recent history… as well as the one with the most opportunity and potential. A perfect draft to get more picks.

I’ve always been a proponent (for the most part) of trading down and not trading up. That’s because there are so many great players to be found in the later rounds. But… and it’s a big but… you have to have talent evaluators that can capitalize on those extra picks. Millen’s trading up and down failed because he’s a horrible talent evaluator and didn’t listen to his scouts’ advice. Great draft manuevering and great talent evaluating must go hand in hand to successfully speed up the overall talent levels on a roster. See Bill Walsh’s early drafts for the epitome of drafting elegance.

Me… I’m all for Mayhew trading out of this pick if that means more good talent to fill the myriad holes in this pathetic roster. As it is, it’s going to take at least two more drafts… and good ones at that.

is anyone else all for the rumor....

…..of Ernie Sims for Jets saftey Kerry Rhodes…..Ive seen this rimor and id be all for it…..Rhodes and Delmas…..Oh man thats a saftey combo.

He's listed as an FS

But as you’ve probably heard Schwartz doesn’t want a traditional run-stopping SS, but rather 2 ball-hawking type safeties who are also strong against the run.

by Kalzilla on Feb 9, 2010 5:50 PM EST up reply actions

I haven't heard rumors

I have heard speculation, but that means absolutely nothing. I agree that he’s too small. One can fantasize though can’t he?

by Kalzilla on Feb 9, 2010 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

dont think it matters if he a FS or SS

Cunningham doesnt give his safeties roles like that, but ya Simms is too small to be a every down 3-4 OLB

2nd round gives the best value

1 ELITE prospect (Suh) or 2 or 3 damn GOOD prospects (ala Delmas/Laurenitis/ Kyle Wilson)

by JazzyBBP on Feb 9, 2010 2:58 PM EST reply actions

There are numerous duds in the second round too. More than round one.

There are no sure things anywhere. I think a pick in the top ten will still get us one of McCoy or Berry. One of Derrick Morgan or Joe Haden would also be available too I would hope.

The need for extra picks is a big one

We lack a lot of talent. The more players we can get the better.

The Bringers of Hope: Stafford - Delmas - C. Johnson - Pettigrew - Levy - Hill - Schwartz
Zack Follett: he will hurt your mind.
