Peyton Manning

I decided this morning after reading another mock draft that I would post this.  Can we at least give the draft talk a rest until the end of the month?  I don't think It will happen but, lets get to the point of this post.  I think it is pretty obvious that we a seeing the greatest quarterback of all time in Peyton Manning.  Yes, I know he only has one Super Bowl win.  The numbers are speaking IMO.  Even in Madden they are talking.  He has every single career passing record.  I mean this is only one mans opinion.  Let the argument begin!!

My vote would be for "not yet"

It’s possible he will be the greatest QB ever by the end of his career, but I don’t think he’s there quite yet.

I agree "not yet"

I think it will take a few more years.

At his current rate of production, he should break all of Favre’s records (yards, td’s, completions) over the next 4 to 5-1/2 seasons (except interceptions—that would take him 9 years), so if he plays 6 years more, he’ll own all of the stats for sure. I think he’ll need another SB win to convince a lot of people though.

I say yes

I agree the stats aren’t quite where they need to be to make this a slam dunk, but watching this guy play and control the offense makes me believe he is the best. The superbowl was not his best outing, but the way he evaluates defenses, changes plays on the line, and has incredible accuracy – it would be hard to build a better QB if you could do so from scratch. Add this incredible intelligence and talent to his amazing work ethic and compassion for fans and teamates and you have a complete teammate who is a great football player as well as a great person.

I would love it if Stafford fits into the Peyton Manning mold more than Brett Farve (not that we can go wrong either way).

I guess I should have specified

IMO he is. If not to most, he will be.

I'm a huge...

Joe Montana fan. I think Peyton is better.

Love favre and Joe

But no one has ever took full control of a offense like Peyton and No one can direct his army into battle quite like him. Its his Knowledge of the gem that makes him better than anyone to date.

Lions fans should be more sympathetic to this

We spent 10 years having to explain to people that Barry Sanders was better than Emmitt Smith.

It’s not official until his career is over, but Peyton is the best QB ever….multiple rings or not.

by HoorayForEverything on Feb 9, 2010 3:20 PM EST reply actions

I love Emmit

He didn’t have the lions crappy offensive line when he did it either. Thats why Barry was so great

Best QB of this era

I’m 23, so I didn’t really see a lot of football pre early 90’s, but I can’t say Manning is better than Montana (or Elway, in my personal opinion).

Time will tell, but I feel like a crucial SB interception may have just set him a step back, regardless of his statistical accomplishments. Breaking all the passing records on a team thats been pass heavy for the last decade in a league that has become increasingly more focused on the passing game doesn’t (personally) impress me that much.

That said, my personal opinion is that yeah, he could absolutely be the best QB of all time. His brain alone blows me away with the knowledge and hard work he obviously puts into the game. He is head and shoulders above Brady and all the similar QBs of this era.

There are a million reasons for picks

QB fault, WR fault, bad luck, great defensive play, hail mary, etc….

I think Porter jumped a route based on reading the play unfold from prior film study and guessed correctly (like a goalie saving a PK) and made an awesome play that won the superbowl.

by HoorayForEverything on Feb 9, 2010 4:45 PM EST up reply actions

I said yes, but that's an incomplete yes

I think he needs at least another Super Bowl win or two. But from a cerebral, accuracy and most valuable to his team perspective… you have to say yes. The guy is like a surgeon dissecting the opponent’s defense. I’ve seen very few quarterbacks play with the precision that Manning plays with… it’s simply incredible.

But I would also say that both Montana and Brady have shown the ability to systematically break a defense down through intelligence and accuracy as well… just not as consistently as Manning. Favre and Elway both had the heart and the unbelievable arm strength. Marino had a strong arm, the fastest release on the planet and threw the long ball better than any quarterback ever. But Manning is the whole package. If he plays for another 5-7 years and continues to post 4,000+ seasons and gets another SB win or two…. there will be little debate. He will hold every record in the NFL. If anything, he will always be in the top three… no question.

Peyton

I bet Peyton Manning gets into coaching after he’s done playing.

by coolbreeze42 on Feb 9, 2010 7:34 PM EST reply actions

You'd think so

He seems to be more prone to coaching then being in the media.

The Lions are in need of a QB coach....

Peyton could start right now.

He's on the way

To me, he’d have to take huge dropoff in the next 3-4 seasons. If he continues on his way though, I think there’s no doubt that he’ll go down as the greatest QB ever.

It's going to be tough

not to say he is the best because he will have every passing record out there. However, I do believe as most people the QB is the most influential position in all of sports. Meaning winning the big games. Yes, Peyton has one ring, but as great as he is shouldn’t he have more, or at least a better playoff record. I know he isn’t responsible for his whole team, but that needs to be remembered the year they won the Super Bowl. Cause his team played better that year in the playoffs than Manning did.

You know why we're having this discussion? Because he's a great player, a special player who won a Super Bowl.....and because the Colts didn't trade down

THAT’s why the Lions need special players. Don’t be afraid of greatness. If a special player is there, draft him! Don’t trade down from greatness.
