Combine Common Sense

Spiller and Matthews are still the best RBs in the draft.

McCluster is still better in the open field than Best

Brandon LaFell is still better than Taylor Price

Remember this Cedric Peerman not only ran the BEST 40 for a RB last year, but also put up the MOST reps on the bench....

Derrius Heyward-Bey...Nuff Said

Don't read too much into Ben Tates  and Bruce Campbells 40 times...Toby Gerhart and Anthony Davis are still better...

Brandon Tate as well....

…I mentioned this yesterday in one of the posts…And now hes all over ESPN insider today….This guy is going to be great.

Oh and im not reading to much into tate........

….However I guess I dont understand how 2 4.30 40s are bad….lol…..I like the fact that he didnt get beat up in college as he didnt start til his junior year…..Matthews got beat up for 4 years and that took a lot out of him….he will fade out in the NFl after a few years in my opinion….tate is a beast and I like him maybe 2nd behind Spiller with Blount 4th and Matthews 5th….I mean its like Tate came out of Nowhere hes was a top 8 back on most boards and top 5 on some so its not a stretch to say he goes in 2nd.

You have...

…some serious man-love for Ben Tate. He’s an intriguing prospect, but he wasn’t consistent enough throughout his career at Auburn. Watch some tape on him; he just doesn’t play as fast as his forty time.

And for the record, Mathews only got “beat up” for 3 years at Fresno State. Tate is the one who got beat up for 4 years. If you want to knock on Mathews, you’ll make a better argument by saying that he’s injury-prone. Either way, my money’s on Mathews being the better pro.

by BriansLions on Mar 1, 2010 7:09 PM EST up reply actions

I didnt say anyone was injury....

…..prone…I just saud he would get beat yp…And yes I do Like Tate just like I like Kevin Smith no one was sauing anything about him and Shone Greene last year…..matthews could be a good pro im just saying id rather have tate.

by BennieBladesFan on Mar 1, 2010 8:07 PM EST up reply actions

I meant...

…that you can arguably make the case that Ryan Mathews is injury prone. He never played an entire season without missing at least one game due to injury.

Not sure how Shonn Greene got into the conversation (?), but I liked him out of Iowa last year, as well.

by BriansLions on Mar 1, 2010 8:44 PM EST up reply actions

I brought up Greene....

…..because he wasnt a huge prospect until the combine just like Tate helped himself out with the combine……And how I liked Greene before the combine just as i liked tate before the combine…Thats all.

by BennieBladesFan on Mar 1, 2010 10:38 PM EST up reply actions

No worries

I enjoy the conversation. The Lions’ll probably end up taking Jahvid Best at 34 overall, so it won’t even matter unless you want to take a flyer on Tate in your fantasy league… Trust me, I’ll be taking a flyer on Ryan Mathews, just as I took a flyer on Ray Rice the past couple years…

I would love to see us draft Ben Tate in a late round.....

He is definitely a talented sleeper pick.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

I doubt he gets past the 3rd round

The beginning of the end of the misery

by latif on Mar 2, 2010 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

Which means we will not draft him because he is worth no more than a 5th round pick or later.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

BBF I understand that Shonn Greene did not do well at the combine last year.

He ran a 4.62 40. I think this supports the thinking even more, that some guys don’t run good forties, yet still seem to be fast on the field. I seem to recall that Greene had a few long runs for the Jets so he must have some speed.

i like ben tate at rb but about montario hardesty both would upgrade are rbs on lions but only if you have extra 2rd pick do you take them in 2rd more lickly in 3rd .

not sure i get the point to this post but

I am still not sold on spiller. Matthews is the best back in the draft you wait and see. Spiller I dunno about him he is nowere near the CJ2K people want to think he is.

The Combine, just like the whole evaluation process, is an indicator

The combine is a good way of seeing a player in action outside of a game situation. You can’t put too much stock into the results, you just use them to add to the overall evaluation.

The Bringers of Hope: Stafford - Delmas - C. Johnson - Pettigrew - Levy - Hill - Schwartz
Zack Follett: he will hurt your mind.

Game film, the Combine, Senior Bowl Week, all-star games, Pro Days, team visits......they are ALL pieces of the puzzle

Now before anyone makes a blanket generality like "the Combine doesn’t matter at all", an explanation is in order. To evaluate a player, you need information from a variety of sources, and from a variety of perspectives, in order to evaluate different things about a player. Game film shows you how he plays the game of football on the field against college competition (within the restrictions of that team’s playbook/scheme). Scouts can further break down game tape or live games. All-star games show how he does on the field against the BEST college players, while sometimes playing out of his natural position, and in a different playbook/scheme. A week of Senior Bowl practices is very important, since it’s a lot of one-on-one time for a coach to really learn about a player and a person, as Schwartz discovered with Kyle Wilson. This is a great way to find special players with talent AND intangibles. The Combine measure raw physical abilities. This is important too. Many players are smart, experienced players who look good on tape against college competition, but there may be questions about whether he’s fast enough, strong enough, agile enough to excel against NFL players. The Combine answeers these questions, just like how the Senior Bowl answers questions about adaptability, willingness to take coaching, and performance against top college talent. Together, game tape, scouts, all-star games, Senior Bowl Week, the Combine, Pro Days, and team visits give us a more complete well-rounded picture of a player. No one piece of the puzzle is the single answer……..but they are ALL a piece of the puzzle.

Hey, as long as Zack Follett keeps hitting people, he can rap to Barney the Dinosaur for all I care.

Yea, I agree

I didn’t mean this to say that the combine is worthless. All the NFL GM’s wouldn’t be there if it was worthless.

But I don’ take a lot of stock in 40’s or bench press number unless they are WAY out of hand good or bad…

A RB runs a 4.28 or a 4.85 I would take that into consideration

but for RBs i dont care if a guy runs a 4.45 or a 4.55 for the difference there, I would go to the game film.
