Deal for Antonio Cromartie Now "Highly Unlikely"
It looks like the talk about the Lions trading for Chargers cornerback Antonio Cromartie was all for nothing, because Tom Kowalski is reporting that Detroit has decided to "move in a different direction."
According to a league source with knowledge of the situation, it's "highly unlikely'' the Detroit Lions will trade for San Diego Chargers cornerback Antonio Cromartie. The two teams did have talks concerning a deal but the Lions have opted to move in a different direction.
Kowalski cited Cromartie's lack of physicality as a possible reason why the Lions decided to move on. I'm sure what compensation the Chargers would have received for Cromartie probably played a part in the deal not going anywhere as well. We all know that the Lions greatly value their draft picks, and quite honestly I can't see them wanting to part with anything too high for someone like Cromartie, who only has a year left on his contract anyways.

I think it may be for the best.....
it would have been a risky move. And if we had to send Morris. Than that means we would be drafting a RB. Mostly likely pretty high. With that same pick. We can draft a CB that potentially could be better.
if the shoe fits...get another one just like it - George Carlin
or are we playing hardball?
Maybe SD was asking to much and if they don’t get it we could be right back in it for less. Morris straight up? Arnt they going to cut him anyway so they should take whatever we offer unless they can find more elsewhere? I respect the moves mayhew and co have made so I trust there doing the right thing no matter how much we need to improve that position.

Stephen Quadros: Yes, well many of the fighters have a black belt.
Bas Rutten: Yes, but in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu you cant buy your belt like in say, Tae Kwon Do.
Stephen Quadros: Do you have any belts?
Bas Rutten: I have a brown belt in Tae Kwon Do.

This is probably a good move....
….considering he really does not fit Cunningham and Schwartz system of a tough corner like Sean says….I guess we will see if any other trades are in the works and what Free Agenct brings…..I for one cant wait til Friday.

Playoffs/youtube
You guy’s do all read this blog right? You saw CroFarties youtube SUCKAGE right? That’s not what we need to move ahead. What he had 1 interception for a "104/7{not sure}yrd return? I know another PLAYA who had “only” a 101 yard return for a TD!!! Yep he plays for us already. We call him…..Mr. Delmas! The…ROY!!!!
“If ya can’t tackle, ya don’t know how to play!{ME}”
THANK GOD
I knew Jim Schwartz was finally going to be the one to crush this! I finally truly believe in this front office. Cromartie goes against everything theyve been saying. Pick players who fit our phillosophy. Bigger, more physical, smart players who have a motor. And, bring them in through the draft or FA. With the way we picked last year I wanna keep all our picks. Cheer up guys you have a real front office who believes in their coach for the 1st time in a decade!

I knew it wasnt going to work
According to the yahoo thing San Diego wanted Morris and a 2nd round pick. From what I read in the Detroit News they wanted Morris and one of the 5th rounders. I commented on the yahoo link that there is noway Detroit would give up its 2nd round pick because there could be someone just as good if not better than Cromartie available. Or draft a guy like Javid Best if he is there and use him as the primary back and use Smith on passing plays because thats where Smith is affective. He has speed thats all he has. He cant cut corners and get around the defender. He is best suited for a quick few yards. That is what I see and I belive alot of you see it as well. I know he was a 2000 yard rusher in College but in College you dont have the quickness of the defenders or the smarts either.
I'd say he is quick and has
good vission with no top end speed. I might be missing something but the reason he wasn’t a 1st rounder was his lack of top end speed . . .

Smith ran a 4.4 which if you look at all th RB's in this years combine is pretty damn fast.
The average was like 4.5-4.6. His two biggest downfalls coming out were the immense amount of carries he had in college and the fact that he played for a “smaller” school and didn’t face “top” competition. He had a lot of wear on his tires coming into the NFL and people were worried about his durability and longevity. Which looking at 2009 were warranted concerns. Granted last year was the first year he has ever had any injury issues including college. I thought his best asset coming out was his durability and toughness. I mean he had 450 carries his senior year and didn’t have even a minor injury or durability issue.
We’ll just have to see how he recovers from this knee injury and see how he performs and holds up going forward.
4.44 to be exact. I don't know if that's the official or unofficial time.
It’s hard to get two straight But I’ve seen everything from 4.43-4.45. So I’m saying 4.43 because that’s the one I see the most.
thats good speed but its not elite
speed. Im just saying hes quicker than fast.

He has sideline to sideline speed.......
He is a ball hawk, his coverage skills are elite, and he hits HARD. His 40 time is a little slower than advertised, but all in all I still think he will be an amazing player in the NFL.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
K we were
talking about Kevin Smith

Damn good news !
I’m glad to see The Man ( front office ) is using the old brain pan. Think twice – Do once. I wonder if THE P.O.D. has any influence on decision making in Allen Park ? You know, we do have members who are not afraid to throw in criticism. I’ll bet with so many hits on the web site, someone from the Lions is laying in the weeds under an alias stiring us up for feed back. Pretty work out there people, keep thinking !
Keep dreamin' buddy...
A billion-dollar NFL franchise does not look to an internet message board for tips when they’re paying 6 figure salaries to people to do that job…
I feel more and more better
seeing the times at the combine…. there will be a few good ones at the #2 pick in the second or if they trade the second rounder down
GO LIONS in 2010! the transformation starts now.. they have much to do.
I am not on the "I'm glad this didn't happen" bandwagon
Regardless of what anyone says about Antonio Cromartie, minus a couple of bad plays and one mediocre season, the guy is one of the best corners in the GD league…..he can run in man to man coverage and he makes plays. If it is a fact that San Diego is after a 2nd rounder AND a RB, then I can understand why the Lions balked and walked. However, if it is a 5th rounder and Maurice Morris, I think it is a colossal fuckup for the Lions to not take the offer. Unless one of the guy’s legs suddenly fell off, I do not see Detroit getting a better deal anywhere else, and we need corners like the unemployed need jobs. We are not likely to draft a better corner than Antonio Cromartie, “character issues” be damned! What other free agent CB even matches up?
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
K
he had 1 good season and 2 bad ones. . . its not like he’s been out there shutting guys down cosistantly.
by Waitingfortheroar on Mar 2, 2010 1:08 PM EST up reply actions
I like Dunta Robinson too......
But he also struggled last season. The way I see it is that Cromartie is 25 years old, and his experience alone makes him better than any draft prospect available.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
yeah but
i watch the dude play every week in San Diego. I just don’t think he’s an elite corner. Hes better than ours but, so is your grangma lol. He doesn’t fit what Schwartz likes. I trust the guy.

Ok
Injured in both 08 and 09……he still only missed 1 game in those 2 seasons. Could his INT and PDef numbers be less because of the fact that teams realized how good he is and they threw his direction less? He only started 8 games in 2007 and he had 10 picks and 18 Pdefs? All I am saying is that we have ALL seen this guy play, and while your opinion is that he is not an elite corner, I respectfully disagree. What I have seen of the guy is nothing but great (minus the lack of physicality against the Jets….which is inexcusable and unexplainable).
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
I got ya.
And, I understand the whole he doesn’t get thrown at arguement. But, he does. Jammer is the best corner on that team. He went to a probowl with only 2 picks I think. Agree to dissagree?
by Waitingfortheroar on Mar 2, 2010 1:39 PM EST up reply actions
Oh I agree that Jammer is the better corner.....
But let’s not go there…..lol. I screamed at the GD TV for 20 minutes when we drafted Joey “The Piano Man” Harrington over Jammer……%^!$#%^$!^%$%
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
hahah
youre a better man than I. I thought Joey was gonna get me a championship. After a 2 month period of hating the pick that is. I always hate every pick besides Stafford, Calvin, and sadly I really like the Mike Williams pick. I’ll take 2 of 3. Jesus christ Mike Williams shoot me!

I liked the Mike Williams pick too.....
And the Charles Rogers pick……hell, I even liked the Roy Williams pick and I was ecstatic over Kevin Jones……
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
Im with you on kevin jones.
I still think if he stayed healthy and had a good offensive line he would have been scary. Thomas Jones esque

seriously?
They’re actually worried about losin Morris? With all the potential free agent RBs out there, losing a guy like Morris, who’s 30 & counting & wasn’t all that impressive last year, maybe more of a run blockin concern, or a comin from behind pretty much every game concern. But I’d rather have an aging LT than an agin Morris. Cromartie’s mid 20’s, so there’s growth potential there & their DB was inconsistent at best, with the exception of Delmas, who also had some rookie mistakes. Adding Dunta too would be a good idea, they need way more than just Cromartie, maybe even Joe Haden.
If they would pull the trigger for Cromartie.....
They could draft Suh in the 1st and possibly Kyle Wilson in the 2nd……apparently they have another idea that they believe is a better option. In my opinion, the only way they could do better than Cromartie in FA is if they went out and acquired Dunta Robinson…..however, you better bet that Robinson will not come nearly as cheap as Cromartie would.
That said…..if it is more than Mo Morris and a 5th, I would not do it either!
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
They must've been asking for too much
It’s good that they are not over-paying.
The Bringers of Hope: Stafford - Delmas - C. Johnson - Pettigrew - Levy - Hill - Schwartz
Zack Follett: he will hurt your mind.
It is for the best
I think its because Cromartie is not physical enough, possibly in tackling. If they asking too much for someone who won’t tackle, I say no as well.
