Around SBN: MLB Trade Deadline: Where each team stands right now

"I won't get into specific names, but we had a number of guys on defense who would have been better a step back from where they were actually having to play every week," Mayhew says.

"We had a number of spots where a player would have been perfect as, say, a third defensive end or a nickel, or as a backup special teams player. But they were forced onto the field and were a little overmatched, overwhelmed at times.

"That's definitely something that we took a long look at after the season. We feel like a lot of guys on our team are quality players and they belong in the league, but they need somebody ahead of them and they need to be in a rotation or in the right role."

WOW

I know we all know that has been the case for years. I would think being one of those players that staement might sting a little bit. I do think some of the guys like Hunter can be very productive now with a guy like Vanden bosch to pick up some slack and help him out.

he tells it

like it is…. the guy I’m telling you knows his stuff.. a former player… he’s destined to get the Lions right!!!

GO LIONS in 2010! the transformation starts now.. they have much to do.

Millen was a player too

Just sayin LOL. Your right he really seems to know what he’s doing and actually enjoys his job. Like schwartz though he’s your face and teels the truth. It is refreshing for sure.

Millen however

was just an annalist on television lol. Thanks Ford! Mayhew’s been a front office guy for a while.

by IAmGross on Mar 11, 2010 9:32 AM EST up reply actions

yes he was

a player. then an annalist. then got a job as a gm. he had no front office experience prior to that. its like taking 1 business class and getting to become a CEO!

he won't get into specific names

so why don’t we:
I’d say all of our DBs save Delmas
The one that really stands out to me is Avril, who is good in bursts but can’t seem to find any consistency.
I think he’s also talking about Kevin smith, who i really like but with his injury situation, it’s abundantly clear that he can’t be a workhorse, feature back.

by stumpy8100 on Mar 10, 2010 3:53 PM EST reply actions

He didn't get into reasons either...

…one of which is injuries. Forcing some of those developmental players to play big.

I’m telling you now – if we can stay healthy, this team is going to win a lot of games next year! It’s a big if, I know…but we’re getting close to having solid talent across the team.

Just livin' the dream...

Put down the Blue Kool Aid

-I love your enthusiasm, but let’s be realistic. If we can get over 5 wins this next season, that will be a huge improvement. Last year at this time Kevin Smith was talking about playoffs, PLAYOFFS? PLAYOFFS? DID YOU SAY PLAYOFFS??? Let hope that the upgrades in defense will improve our D from the bottom of the league to the middle.

Uhhh Marty, You pretty well named them.

Third DE = Cliff Avril , Nickel Back = All of them except Delmas.

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 10, 2010 3:59 PM EST reply actions

After going 2-30 in the past two years, I would think so.

Thank you for not blowing smoke up your fanbase’s collective ass by saying something like, “we feel these guys can play, they just need to develop” or something equally insulting.

I root for the Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings and yes, the Lions.

I understand football character. Guys who love football and want to be a champion. I’ve been around that, so I know what to look for

I love...

how people on PFT are acting like Mayhew is way out of line for saying this and that he is pointing fingers at everyone but himself.

After reading this, doesn’t it sound more like a GM who likes where the team is heading and that he has confidence in his roster, but being honest in the fact that they aren’t starters and are better suited in certain situations.

Not to mention that this is an older quote from before free agency and I don’t know why it’s so relevant today as opposed to when he said it initially.

by lions_sucker on Mar 10, 2010 4:40 PM EST reply actions

Im still holding out hope ...

Avril will bring more to the table. He is still young, was injured last year and had no help on the line nor behind him save a fell L-Backers and Delmas. After this year, with the additions we added, i say the jury will be out !!

by Joey-P on Mar 10, 2010 5:08 PM EST reply actions

I'm a big fan of trying Avril at LB

We have a big lack of depth there and he could be a good pass rusher off the edge, plus we have hardly anything going for depth at that position. Imagine a 6 man blitz with our improved D-line and Avril and Peterson coming off the edges at LB.

he tried at Purdue...it did not work out so well

That is all.

thanks Sean

Cleveland fits I guess. I thought Derreck Andersons quote was refreshing. That was pretty classless of their fans.

Cleveland Fans

Are saying they were cheering for the chance that BQ would get a shot.

They ruined Anderson, he had a great year and in respionse the club drafts Brady Quinn … God I hope we make the SuperBowl before they ever do

by Beerhero on Mar 10, 2010 11:51 PM EST up reply actions

I don't

care what their fans say. They cheered an injured man that for all they knew would never walk or be the same again. there is no excuse for it. it was classless. thats all.

by Waitingfortheroar on Mar 11, 2010 1:21 AM EST up reply actions

They weren't the only ones cheering their fallen QB,

as I recall Detroit fans cheered Batch when he got injured.

by Usmarine0341 on Mar 13, 2010 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

i know one of the ppl hes talkin about for sure

buchanon is a great nickel but was forrced to play outside

by Daniel Simonelli on Mar 10, 2010 11:06 PM EST reply actions

I think we should try to get him back to play nickel

I’m sure it won’t happen seeing how we cut him, but I’d still like to see it happen. Draft a CB to start opposite Houston and play Buchanon at Nickle. You’d think we could find a spot for a guy who ran down Adrian Peterson in the open field (causing a sweet fumble).

by WestsideLionsFan on Mar 11, 2010 12:09 AM EST up reply actions

they almost have to

grab a lg or lt now sense its lookin at suh for the pick

by Daniel Simonelli on Mar 10, 2010 11:07 PM EST reply actions

Also I love SLH.....

….but he wastn quite ready to start yet last year….hes needs to get a lil stronger and im sure hes working on that this offseason….he played way better tehn most rooks but I dont think he was ready to start last year.
