Trade possibility
Just throwing this out there, why not trade next years #1 to get back in the first round this year? This is by far the deepest draft in recent years, and with the best juniors coming out because of the CBA, who's coming out next year? I say trade next years #1 for a mid first rounder and really improve our team this year. Hopefully next year we wont be picking so high anyway so we would get the best value for next years pick this year. Just throwing the ideal out there.

Never really thought about that
I think if there’s a seriously blockbuster offer we might be able to pull (like getting Suh AND Berry or something) I’d be all for it. I totally agree that with the draft as deep as it is for a good reason, we should mine it for the best players we can. That’s a scenario no one has even mentioned here… Imagine a draft where we take Suh at #2 and Berry with Seattle’s 6 or something.. It’s farfetched, but worth a thought.
Hell yeah
If we could get suh and berry, by sacrificing next years first round that would be REDIC.
i wonder if the front office has thought of this
Think about it though
Suh and Spiller would be a nice coup, Berry and one of the other top ranked DT’s, Suh and Haden, Suh and Iupati, Okung and a DT, possibilities are endless when you think about it
I'm telling you
The more I think about it the more sense it makes, glad someone else is thinking the same way though, we need to start a movement with this train of thought. Nobody can decide between what we should do with the 2nd pick, this opens up so many more options to think about.
Too much money
We can’t afford the big contracts they would get.

Uncapped year
You would probably have to front load the contracts this year, but Ford has money and I really don’t think he minds spending, just had the wrong advice on who to spend it on in the past.
Probably
It doesn’t seem so far there are many things that Mayhew/Schwartz haven’t thought about.
No salary cap this year
I think we can front load the rookies this year and that way we wouldn’t get into the salary cap complications later on down the line.
If I were to trade next year's first rounder
I would trade it 2011 first rounder, 3rd rounder and Jeff Backus to Cleveland for LT Joe Thomas. We could have Thomas and then sign LG Ryan Lilja and go from a bad O-Line to an above average O-Line. That might be the only trade I would do because we proably cant get a high pick in this years draft.
Even the Browns
are not that stupid. Why would they even think about trading their young elite LT? That makes no sense guy. They would probably want this year’s first rounder too, but even then that’s doubtful: you just don’t get rid of proven franchise LT’s, especially young ones like a Joe Thomas.
no. no no no no no no.

I like it
We’ll have to give up more then just next year’s first rounder obviously, but I would love to see us give somebody maybe our first rounder and fourth rounder next year for somebody’s late first rounder this year, then we can grab Mike Iuptapi and get the long-term Guard we’ve been looking for for god knows how long.
I just think
that next years 1st rounder is useless with everyone coming out this year. I just think this draft is too deep to not try to get back in this year. We need about 4 more starters this year to truly be competitive. I like the way the FO drafted last year, I know we could get 4 quality starters this year with one extra pick.
I don't think a first rounder can ever be useless
but, yes, I do agree the draft this year will be deeper. The problem is that everybody knows this is a deep draft, which will make pulling off a deal difficult. I would be glad to see it happen though.
Not useless
But worth less compared to this years talent
It would be something to consider I guess.
Sounds a little far fetched but hey Chi gave up 2 for cutler and we would still get the rest of are draft.

Yeah
I was actually contemplating this with a friend of mines earlier and I would absolutely love for the Lions to be aggressive and grab another piece to the puzzle. Their are lots of positives when it comes to trading a future pick for this year’s mid round pick but their are also some negatives.
The Lions can save millions of dollars if their is a salary cap for next year’s rookie class with that 2011 first rounder so the only downside to this would be financial reasons but if they see a guy they have a high grade on and is still on the board in the middle of the first round. I could see the Pats pick at 22 being a possibility since they’re loaded with picks in the coming rounds and already have the Raiders top ten pick for next year so it wouldn’t be that bad even though 22 seems a little far down but like I said, if there’s a guy, say Iupati or even a Brandon Graham for those Wolverines fans, than they might be able to grab him even though I’m not in favor of Graham but the options are limitless this season.

Interesting idea
May reap rewards, I’d say our FO would have to be IN LOVE with 2 of the guys atop of their big board. Suh and Berry maybe?
The Bringers of Hope: Stafford - Delmas - C. Johnson - Pettigrew - Levy - Hill - Schwartz
Zack Follett: he will hurt your mind.
Maybe
The FO could be in love with Spiller, Haden, one of the other LT’s, or another top 10 guy on their board, but not enough to take them at 2. To see them drop to the teens would have to be enough to try to get them now. I guess my thing is why put of til tomorrow what you could do today.
The question
would be how many games would we win with another 1st rounder this year, enough to go from 5 wins to 8? 8 wins usally starts around 15, would a 15th pick this year be better than a 15th next year? I think sewing up the lines or the running back position or the safety position would mean more wins. I guess it all depends on how many games you think we will win next year.
that and who are you getting and were
If you trade backup it better be a talent that can help your team win NOW

We all have our opinions
On what we need, ask yourself this “Who, if they slid to around 12-16, would you give up next years pick to get”?
Lets get a Guard!
Rob Sims with the Ravens is an RFA with a 4th round tender. He’s only 26 and would be a big improvement over our Guards.
hmmm thats actually enticing a bit

I don't think any teams will fall for it.
Other F.O.‘s know that because of the economy the new cap (whenever they declare one) will be lower than last year’s.
Dream on guys. Our 2011 First Rounder is worth no more than a 2010 Second Rounder.
So you still have to give up at least a couple of picks THIS YEAR to get an early pick. It will not happen. Back to Madden 2010 guys.
I have a problem with this scenerio...
if you say it is a deep draft. Which it is. And you suggest we trade our 1st round next season for a mid round this season. Here’s my problem. Next years draft will not be aas deep. So we miss out next year. And if this is a deep draft this year. Than we should be able to get 1st round talent in the later round anyway. So why trade?
if the shoe fits...get another one just like it - George Carlin
It's a pipe dream, but...
it would be a good theoretical move. If they could pull it off it would make sense. This draft is likely much deeper than it will be next year, so from that standpoint it would good to load up in a deeper draft. It would also help the Lions get better quicker. But I’ll tell you right now, they’d have to package more than a 2011 first rounder to get back into the top part of the first round.
They’d probably have to give up a first and third next year and then maybe a player or later round pick this year. It would be very costly. Is that worth one good first round caliber player? I’m not so sure about that. Especially if the Lions have another top ten pick next year, which… sorry to say… is very likely. But trade partners will view a first rounder in 2011 like any first rounder… whether it ends up being third overall or twenty-second overall. That’s just how the game is played.
Other teams would
take that kind of trade. Most teams would love an additional 1st round pick any year, and wtih the potential of a rookie cap it becomes an excellent deal for both teams. We would get an excellent player this year while the team that deals with us would get a good player but wont have to pay him as much. And a 1st coming from Det would have the potential to be a top 10 pick.
I like the idea.....
I think we will be picking low enough next season where it could work wonders
