Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

IAGNN: Dumb & Dumber Updated...kinda

I got my hands on some QB Wonderlic scores, thought I might share some of the more startling results.

(Out of a total 50 pts, in a 12 min exam)
Tim Tebow: 22
Jimmy Clausen: 23
Colt McCoy: 25
Sam Bradford: 36

Bradford scored well with in the context of the wonderlic, similar to Stafford, whom last year scored a 38.
Other notable scores from last year (sanchez 28, freeman 28)

Now the Wonderlic does not always translate performance, but I thought the scores were surprising.

As Per League Source.

Wow

Sam whooped T-bags and Cluassen LOL!. Glad to see Colt do well I am a big supporter of Mccoy. I think he could be a Henne type sleeper in the draft.

Am I missing something. Colt was just barely above Clausen and Tebow and you think he aced it?

Please do not compare Colt to Henne. Henne has a much stronger arm and demonstrated real grit in playing through pain with Michigan.

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 10, 2010 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

please dont read what I wrote out of context

I said colt di WELL as in he scored 2nd to bradford. Sam blew everyone out of the wate LIKE I SAID. I also said colt could be a Henne type sleeper being a second round franchise QB. He is nothing like Chad they play two diffrent games really I love henne he would be a top 10 pick now not a 2nd rounder. I think Colt could be a 2nd or 3rd round QB that in a year or 2 could prove to be a 1st round talent. Please don’t put words in my mouth I never said Colt aced the test he did well as in finsihed 2nd.

I doubt those were the only four QBs who took the test.

Here is the link to the story: http://www.nowpublic.com/sports/2010-nfl-wonderlic-scores-leaked-tebow-clausen-bradford-2589257.html

McCoy is average, along with Tebow and Clausen. Brett Favre scored a 22 too.

I am sure Pike, Snead, Brown, Lefevour, Robinson, etc. all took the test too. It will be interesting to see their scores.

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 10, 2010 9:55 PM EST up reply actions

Did you get the results for any other QBs? Could you link to the results?

I really doubt that “Brainiac” McCoy got the second highest score in the Wonderlic, with three points higher than that “moron” Tebow. LOL

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 11, 2010 6:59 AM EST up reply actions

As much as I don't like him

Tebag was a winner for 4 years in Florida, against some of the elite compitition even if I think the SEC and ACC are over rated every single year. ACC=Basketball. And TY NorthLefty Henne was way better than these guys other than Bradford who I actually liked and prayed we waited for to draft.

The main reason I was

fine with the Stafford pick is that he could throw the ball through a brick wall and that he showed the abillity to think quickly on the W lick test. Dam Bradford showed some good quick thinking skill. He better hope he can use his accuracy the way stafford can use the rocket launcher attached to his right shoulder. Sucks to be a QB taken first over all cuzz you walk anto a crap team.

I didn't

say either guy couldn’t help turn a team around. Just that its a tough situation. And, not many guys are close to Manning as a QB

No agree

I was basicly sayin that even manning got drafted to a horrible team. Thats why when you pick a guy like stafford or Bradfor early like that. It is hard to make a go of it. The guys who do though are the true greats.

for sure

Mathew has all the physical tools to be great. we really need to help this guy along. Didn’t the colts already have marshal faulk in place? we need to get a running game going to help our young QB out.

Gotta agree to that too

we need better blocking and a running game thats a true threat. Imagine what staff would have done if he was in sanchezs shoes.

I wouldn't have been surprised

if he threw 20 TD’s in a jets uni last year. I really ant Lupati to fall to us in the 2nd. we really need DB help also. this team just isn’t anywhere near complete.

Ahhh profiler

Not that I’m picking on you here,BUT are you fucking kidding me about Manning not getting drafted to a good team? Dude he had Marshal Faulk in his backfield and M Harrison with some descent lineman when he was drafted. The reason the colts sucked the year before was QB play and Faulk got hurt. The colts were light years ahead of what Staff had when he came here, Staff had 1 guy Megatron. But that’s just knit-pickin on my behalf, I understand what you were trying to say.

How many lumps you want Doc?

by davis0169 on Mar 11, 2010 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

Ummm, davis?

The Colts were picking FIRST in the draft. They sucked big time. Yes, they had Faulk because they drafted high previously as well. And they were not bad only because Faulk got hurt. They went 3-13 Manning rookie year… WITH Faulk. Manning just made them THAT much better once the game slowed down.

This is my source of optimism this year. If Stafford can take similar leaps forward, he will make this whole team better than they really are. That’s what good quarterbacks do.

Manning was able to buffer the team until the rest of the talent caught up with his. That’s why they went 13-3 in his second year. Not ‘cause they had all the pieces, but because they had Manning. When the rest of the team caught up talent-wise, they won a Championship and they are now in the post-season every year. The Lions won’t win 13 games next year because the 98’ Colts were a better team compared to the ’09 Lions… hell, every team in NFL history is a better team.

by DrewsLions on Mar 11, 2010 6:49 PM EST up reply actions

Drew

We had this arguement last year when we talked about what to draft first the chicken or the egg, remember. Manning had a RB and a LT already in place and we don’t. I remember most of that talk last year, every time someone brings up Manning as a comparison. He got Harrison the year after he got there I beleave or was it he got there the year before.Difference is They had a LT to protect him and a awesome threat in Faulk to help him with his Play-action. Staff does not have that same luxury. NO HOF LT and no HOF RB behind him. But I do like the act that I also think Staff can buffer the load but he really needs a better line and a RB that can flat out scare people. Do you think we are going to draft those pieces this year with the draft being so heavily laden with defencive talent?

Surprising...

I thought Clausen might get higher. Another notch for Bradford?

by Hyperion Ecta on Mar 10, 2010 8:02 PM EST reply actions

I think so

plus alot of talk on Claussen is that he has already peaked and doesn’t have enough physical tools to play as an elite QB in the NFL.

I have a 9" personality

by Waitingfortheroar on Mar 10, 2010 8:08 PM EST up reply actions

Okay, I think that kind of talk shows how desperate some of these guys are to dump on Clausen.

Imagine, criticizing a player, any player, because you don’t think he can get any better? The guy just had one of the best seasons a Junior QB ever had in college football and they are trying to use that to say he might not get any better. Classic!

I could use that same logic with Suh. Does that make any sense? NO, I didn’t think so.

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 11, 2010 10:25 AM EST up reply actions

it can only apply

to a quarterback. I see what you are trying to say North. But, QB is always the hardest thing to judge. If you have already learned the NFL system you can have a lower ceiling. Most guys rely alot more on their own physical tool set in college. Claussen didn’t because the system was about working through reads and taking what the defense gives you. that’s what that argument is really saying. i don’t think it is correct every time. but, its obvious that there is some logic to it.

I have a 9" personality

by Waitingfortheroar on Mar 11, 2010 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

Conversely, Bradford has a much higher risk because he has not proven he can do what Clausen has already done.

That is the knock on Tebow and Colt McCoy too. I don’t care if Bradford got 136 on his Wonderlic, that does not mean he can be a good NFL QB and do the reads etc. that Clausen is already doing thanks to his experience with the Pro style system that Charlie Weis installed at Notre Dame.

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 11, 2010 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

that is a verry fair assessment.

I see what you mean. My only question is Claussens are strenth since he tended to sail allot of balls and high velocity throws. then again bradford didn’t throw the ball deep as much in the spread system. I think they both have alot of question marks. I just think bradford has more of the skill set physicallt that the pro game requires.

Fitzpatrick

thats the guy that went to Harvard right? so it makes sense he got 48, how does a UMich student get a 22 on the wonderlic (ie Henne)?

I think Bradford is slowly becoming the dark horse #1 pick

by Latif Masud on Mar 11, 2010 1:10 PM EST reply actions

I don't

think hes a darkhorse anymore. I think He’s the favorite. 8 of the last 11 first overall picks were QB’s. And, he was the highest rated QB last year. If he throws well at his workouts and isn’t a moron he’ll get it I think.

I think it is pretty interesting that a guy who did not play very much last year can move ahead of a QB who had one of the best seasons a Junior QB has ever had.

Two shoulder injuries and surgery in two games played? I hope the team that drafts him has a fantastic O LIne. At least Staff and Clausen have experience playing behind a sub standard offensive line in college.

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 11, 2010 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

once again

a great point northy. like is said above both have alot of question marks. I think neither of themm have the upside Stafford has. if bradford ended up in a mark sanchez type of situation I think he has alot better chance to succeed. then again so would most young QB’s. I believe Bradford only had 1 surgery on the shoulder though. didn’t he just rehab the 1st 1?

I don't mean to dump on Bradford Wftr. But I'm just trying to balance out the Clausen bashing.

I am not saying Clausen is perfect, I have some questions about him too, but I have been surprised at the constant negativity regarding him as a person and prospective NFL QB that I have been hearing.

I did not mean to imply that he had two shoulder surgeries. I meant he had two shoulder injuries and one surgery on it.

Northy

Let me shine a light for you. Clausen went to OVERRATED ND and there is alot of fans from college teams that really hates on ND in general, Like me for 1 I’m a Michigan fan and get my rocks off when THEEEE ohio state univercity players come into the NFL and fall flat on their faces almost as much as I enjoy watching ND players come out from that OVER RATED school and fall completely on their faces. Can you get a feeling that I really am a MEEEECHIGAN FAN! GO BLUE! But seriously when is the last time a QB came out of ND and did anything? Joe Montana?? I wish the little gay boy Claussen a great pro-day for the fact that someone might try and jump up to grab him early and for us to get a few more draft picks. On a side note I would like to see TATE on our roster after the draft.

one would think Peyton would be higher on that list

Just based on how he plays the game its kind of suprising.

there is spatial intelligence

and then there is book smarts.

Sometimes it overlaps and correlates to a high wonderlic score, I.E. Stafford. Sometimes it doesnt mean a god damn thing I.E. Marino, Manning, P.

and no I am not directly comparing the three.
