Anthony Hargrove to Visit Detroit

Per ProFootballTalk.com. Apparently Hargrove is tendered with a 3rd-rounder, so if we signed him we'd have to give it up. I personally am not on board with this... although signing yet another defensive lineman (in this case, a DT/DE) signals once again that we either think Suh won't fall to us or we won't take him, I'm not sure that I want our 3rd going to New Orleans for this guy. Don't know a ton about him, maybe you guys can fill in the gaps. What do you think?

Don't know much about him

And looking at his stats, I’m not impressed. I’d prefer to pass w/o knowing more about him.

Why would we bring him in?

When he is already a 3 time substance abuse offender? The next time, he will be suspended for life right?

Hargrove's weight

From a Cotsonika article in the Free Press:

Though listed at 6-feet-3 and 272 pounds, Hargrove played around 300 pounds in the middle last season and still was athletic enough to play on the kickoff team. He started six games and had five sacks. He also played all three playoff games, including the Saints’ victory over the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV.

good find.... thanks.

Plus he played more DE, correct?

by CLF on Mar 16, 2010 8:00 AM EDT up reply actions

They lined him up at both DE and DT

It’s anyone’s guess exactly how he’d be used in Detroit, but I’d assume much in the same fashion.

I'm on the fence CLF

Until I can do more research, I want to reserve my opinion. I will say this…..first impression was “a starting DE for a 3rd rounder is better than spending a high pick for a rookie starter”, but i don’t know much about Hargrove other than the fact that he has substance abuse issues……

That said, I think the Lions FO is starting to move away from black balling guys who have had “character issues” in the past. We on of, if not THE, worst teams in the league…….WHAT DO WE HAVE TO LOSE???? They will probably sign Pac Man, and if they get Hargrove for a third rounder……I am not going to cry about it.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

I agree totally...

My guess would be that Hargrove wouldplay mostly DE, given his questionable 300lb weight.

by CLF on Mar 16, 2010 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

He would have to be a D-end he we signed him

Schwartz likes 300 plus DT he falls way short, maybe a D-end for us. He’s only 26 so he’s still young. I don’t know they better be sold on the guy if there gonna give up a 3rd round pick for him. Very interesting.

by msivits on Mar 15, 2010 5:15 PM EDT reply actions

He's a good DT

But not worth giving up are 3rd when we have a shot a Suh who will be around a hell of alot longer.

How do you keep a running back out of your secondary? You put up a LEVY.

by The Profiler on Mar 15, 2010 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

You can't have him

Hargrove came into New Orleans having seriously messed up his NFL career with drugs and arrests. He straightened himself out, and the he and his agent made a video and sent it around to every team, and the Saints were the only team that would even talk to him. He was signed; he not only stayed sober but worked hard to help others in the same condition; and he played his heart out. In limited action—mostly at tackle, although he’s more naturally a defensive end—he had 5 sacks, 3 passes batted down, 1 forced fumble, and 3 fumble recoveries, including one for a touchdown. If you extend those numbers over a full season as starter, that’s pretty much equal to Will Smith, our Pro Bowl end.

There’s a lot of talk on the Saints blog, Canal Street Chronicles, about drafting a defensive end. I’m convinced that Hargrove is the answer, and I don’t want to lose him. Please leave him alone.

Thanks for the input.

I do remember hearing that he had some pretty decent talent, and from a Saints fan, it’s an interesting perspective. The report said he was talking to a few teams, so I’d say odds are against him signing with us.

by Nate D. on Mar 15, 2010 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

All I've heard is that he's talking

No explanation of why. The Saints took a flyer on him, resurrected his career, and gave him a Super Bowl ring. And now he wants out? It makes me wonder if Tom Benson has decided one championship will last the city another 43 years, and now’s the time to save some money.

NO WAY!

Get the true talent at #2. Giving up a 3rd rounder would be awful.

After Charles Rogers

I would be very hesitant to sign a guy like Hargrove… or Pacman. Let ’em sign elsewhere.

Options

We don’t have a lot of options for talent.

by Quez81 on Mar 15, 2010 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree.

Seems like a gamble that’s unlikely to pay off- but anything is possible.

i would take him but i voted no

our 3rd rounder is really a secong since we pick so high, if N.O. wants to negotiate for a 5th or 4th next year then i would bite. im not so worried about the off the field stuff as it sounds like he has turned it around, im sure they could also put some stipulations in his contract where we dont lose out on the $$$ if its a life time suspension scenario…

it would be agreat pick up you are geting a verry good young player whoe could give you to very good defensive ends we would pickup in fa also hargrove can play dt on pass dowenes . iknow a lot of people want to draft suh with 2pick or berry but i just dont thinck the lions will draft a dt or ss with 2pick today they had a meating with ot russellokung in det so offensive line could be way the lions go if they stay at 2pick affter all they have not pick up any offensive line in fa.

Team pre-draft meetings

Keep in mind that teams are allowed 30 player visits.

Some of those visits are smoke screens to throw other teams off your scent so to speak. Some of them are competitive; so if you need to compete against them in the future you have a better feel for the player. And lastly, some of them are genuine interest.

I am sure Okung is genuine, however, I think it is more of pre-planning in case they mover back a few picks in the draft.

I think this means we would be getting ANOTHER 3rd rounder via draft trade.

If we take him, it signals were not staying at #2. That would mean to me that there could be another 3rd rounder we will be later getting. Maybe they think this is the way to stack our D-Line and trade down. I would only hope if they do this they focus on DBs and O-line with someone like Blount in a later round.

by Joey-P on Mar 15, 2010 6:31 PM EDT reply actions

if he gets picked up

clearly were going down the draft plus holmgraan wants bradford so its a clear sign were prob getting okung in the draft damn i want suh

by sandvet on Mar 15, 2010 6:44 PM EDT reply actions

I don't know about this

Hopefully it’s just a smokescreen. We should be keeping what picks we have currently. Well, at least until the draft.

Im sure we would work out a trade....

….if we did this and not give up the 3rd rounder….He would have to be a DE in Detorit…..Dont see it happening anyway.

by BennieBladesFan on Mar 15, 2010 7:10 PM EDT reply actions

+1

Maybe for the right price, like a conditional 3rd or 4th in 2011 and a 5th or 6th this year. We would have a huge ass D-line with him, KVB, Williams/SLH, and Suh/McCoy.

by WestsideLionsFan on Mar 15, 2010 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Sooooo

If we are bringing in DE’s to take looks at them then I am not the only one who thinks that Avril and Hunter are not worth the money that they are getting. I said that Avril was a here and gone player and this confirms that I wasn’t the only one who see’s that Avril and Hunter are flash players. Meaning they make one flashy play then disappear for the rest of the quarter, and get pushed around too much. If we don’t bring him in (which I wouldn’t for a 3rd round pick) I can see us taking a DE in either the 2nd or 3rd round like I thought we might do reguardless. Guys you can almost ink that trade to one of 3 teams Clev;Seat;Buffalo. We are not going to see Kong in HBAS, But I really think we are narrowing in on Berry with our first round pick; I have been saying that we are going to trade down just so we can get our backfield tandem locked for a decade and this move assuming that we trade for him assures that in my mind. Get you Berry jersey now GRLion…..

How many lumps you want Doc?
