Second-round pick?

So we have all discussed what the Lions may do with the second overall pick in the draft to the point where I'm just plain getting sick of hearing about it. However, I haven't heard anyone really discuss what we'll be doing with our other picks, or at least I haven't seen any topics in regards to it. Since nobody else has been jumping to do it, I am gonna take the initiative and make a couple topics discussing what we should do in other rounds.

We're gonna go ahead and assume the Lions take Suh with the second overall pick. Whether or not that will actually happen is up for debate, but I think it's safe to assume that that's the guy we'll most likely end up with. We're gonna assume there are no crazy draft-day trades, and that we're just drafting with the picks we already have.

So, here's the choices for who we should pick with the 34th overall pick. I've gone over a lot of recently updated mocks to choose the group of guys that have a realistic chance of being there when we pick. Keep in mind I'm sure I missed a couple guys, and a couple of these guys might be gone when we pick. I'll put up a topic for the third-round in a day or two after we've all had a chance to comment. Here goes:

My choice

to start things out with, I chose Best. I know we desperately need talent at the CB position, and I definitely wouldn’t be upset if we take McCourty, but Best is explosive, and could be the home-run hitting runner that we’ve been lacking since Barry left. He could give us the legitimate ground attack that the offense is so sorely lacking.

Best is over-hyped. He was not even the leading rusher on his team

I watched all of Cal’s game last season. Much of his yardage came against weak teams. He can not run between the tackles. If he can not bounce it to the outside. He goes nowhere.

Against Oregaon 16 for 55 yards no TD’s
               USC 14 for 47 yards no TD’s
Arizona ST 18 for 63 yards no TD’s

For a second round pick. I would past on him.

I vote McCourty

Kyle Wilson also, if he falls to the 2nd round.
Toby Gerhart might be available in the 3rd rd.

No way Wilson falls out of the first

but you are right about Gerhart, it’s highly doubtful he goes in the second, but RB is one of our main needs and I wanted voters to have more then one option.

went with other..

cuz i do think wilson will go in the 2nd

Guys guys guys

i’m not saying that we are not going to go with a CB in the second round but I am now thinking (esp now) that we are going to sure up the D-line with the second pick and since the only pick at DE is Dunlap I choose him. First round count your Berries and in the second round take BPA at DE. then if we still have a 3rd round pick say hello to your new Guard. 4th or/and 5th round look for our new CB’s, They wont be hyped like we wanted but I can bet they will have speed and/or height with some kind of ball hawking abilities.

And I almost didn't even put him in

I’ll make sure to put more options in the Third Round post.

Motown

Are you one of the faithful that likes Hunter and Avril? I want to like Avril but he just hasn’t progressed any last year and now bringing in guys to look at I really see us packaging one of these 2 with a draft pick to get someone else that our FO is coveting. The question is who and whoooom!

I'm not enamored with them

but I think they could make do on a winning team. Let’s just say I’m more comfortable with Cliff Avril being our starting end then I am with Wade being our starting corner or Manny being our starting guard.

by motown313 on Mar 15, 2010 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Carlos Dunlap

Is top 10, maybe even top 5 talent. I dont care if we did draft Suh, u take dunlap there and a huge weakness becomes a huge strength. Besides I think Avril is better as a situational pass rusher which means we need someone to match with vanden bosch. Dunlap would be a day 1 starter. If not hime then the highest rated DB available.

Like BERRY?

just jumping back on the flag waving train again. Ask me again next week after we sign someone else and I wont know who the heck we are targetting. I still hope that we somehow bring in Sharper but I can’t see him coming here to play at his age.

as the Lion's "GM" for the upcoming Arrowhead Pride 2-round mock draft, this is a debate I love to see ...

we start our mock tomorrow and I’ll be keeping you awesome people here at PoD updated on how our mock goes in round 1, so you can help figure out the best options for that round two pick … you guys have already been VERY helpful for round one (Suh!)

can’t wait to see how it all plays out … PoD rocks! (not as much as AP but you know … it’s all good!)

Instead of putting us down with Kong, you had better talk to who ever has the GM spot for Seattle and Clev and see who is going to give more for the pick cause it really looks like we are going to trade down outta that 2 spot….

Yeah I got him on Speed dial!

Just look at all the moves we are making, If we add another DE to the mix you can’t take it to the bank that we are going to trade one of our DE’s with a Draft pick for probably 2 picks or maybe even 3 pending what team we trade with.

davis, while I'd love to do that (and I know there's a TON of discussion about trading down the Chiefs #5 pick) ...

… the Powers That Be for our Arrowhead Pride mock have decided that it would take too long and be more confusing and disruptive to be doing trades “on the fly” … in the interests of time and sanity, we won’t be having any trades for our 2 rounder (though it WOULD be fun!)

for this little event, we’re “stuck” with the places we have … Lions at #2 and #34 … what happens in reality, well … that’s going to be REALLY interesting for everyone

keep rockin’ PoD, davis …come on over to AP sometime, the place is a hoot (a lot more traffic than here) and if you do, give a shout out to some of my buddies over there: Seve Chiefs, Red-n-Gold-Beast, BigRedChief, krayfish, stag, KCPorkchop, Lanier63, UCrawford, hrmills, and our awesome webmasters: Joel and Chris Thorman (AP’s version of Sean Yuille who does a GREAT job here at PoD!)

I have always liked the Chiefs the best out in the AFC west ever since the Barry Word/ Christian Okoye days, when I can remember Steve Deberg playing QB with a huge ol wrap on his hand still out there playing it up. Then in more rescent times you guys had 2 of my Wolverines that were a deadly duo in Elvis and Alexander when they had that 2 year run of lighting it up. And let us not forget one of the BEST LB’s to ever play the game was on you D as well. Then you had the Human Joystick on ST.s. Yeah I have always been a closeet chiefs fan. I just never understood how Joe Montana went there to finish out his career, like Marcus Allen did.Joe could have went anywhere and he chose the chiefs.

With Jahvid Best I assume the Lions can have a balanced offense with this being a likely need due to Kevin Smith’s injury and ceiling anyhow, if he is added and the O-Line is stable the Lions could field a very powerful offense to match the Schwartz style defense and create a team capable of .500.

by tkiller314 on Mar 15, 2010 8:18 PM EDT reply actions

sense Kyle Wilson isn't a option

I can see why too. I am goona take pouncey. Fills a need and can start for us if we don’t get pitts we can plug him in at gaurd and groom him to replace raiola if we want as well.

How do you keep a running back out of your secondary? You put up a LEVY.

by The Profiler on Mar 15, 2010 8:31 PM EDT reply actions

That's exactly why I voted Pouncey as well.

Plus he is just an absolute beast and I’ve been hoping for like 2 years that we could end up with him. He is an instant starter and an instant upgrade.

by toled0lions on Mar 15, 2010 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know

if I am missing anything, but iof we take suh,,which is a pretty good bet. We have yet to touch the O line. IMO that is teh direction we need to go with 2nd rd. Any thoughts?

by Rick Chaffee on Mar 15, 2010 10:40 PM EDT reply actions

If I had to guess...

…my instinct is to pick the best defensive back in the second round, hopefully Devin McCourty of Rutgers. I’m not a huge fan of Patrick Robinson though another option is Wake Forest’s Brandon Ghee. If neither Ghee nor McCourty is available I’d probably take an OL: either Bruce Campbell, Roger Saffold, or maybe Maurkice Pouncey (we can play at guard until deciding whether to groom him at Center). I’d rather not reach for a RB here.

Third round I’d be in favor of taking Gerhart, especially if we took a OL in the 2nd. If we took a CB in the 2nd, I’d be in favor of taking a guard, probably John Jerry (of Mississippi) .

Fourth round? if its CB & Jerry beforehand? I’d take the best available player or maybe LeGarrette Blount.

by Mister Gloom on Mar 15, 2010 10:54 PM EDT reply actions

i think Ghee can be had in the 3rd round or later.

not saying he’s not good, because I like him and think he is, it’s just that the draft is so deep that players like him are slipping through the cracks to the later rounds.

BIG TIME evil "PAPA" smurf

If we don’t take Berry in the 6 or 7 spot then hell yeah take Thomas from Texas in the second round that would be almost as deadly a backfield as Berry and Delmas.

How many lumps you want Doc?

by davis0169 on Mar 16, 2010 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I still want Wilson in the 2nd

Given the scenario with no trades, Take Suh in the 1st round, and Wilson in the second, if he’s still there. If Wilson is gone, I’d take Devin McCourty in the 2nd. I hope we don’t give up our 3rd round pick for Hargrove.I think we can find better talent with that pick, Maybe Pouncey, Petrus, Asamoah, or Jerry. Yes, I’m looking to take OL with that pick, and I believe it is a greater need at that time than Hargrove could provide us.

by LionTarHeel on Mar 16, 2010 10:29 AM EDT reply actions

KYLE WILSON WILL NOT DROP OUT THE FIRST ROUND

how could you guys possibly think this guy would last till the second? McCourty might even go in the first, but he’s got a better chance of falling to the second then Wilson. I’m getting tired of people saying he’ll be there when there is no chance of it. His stock has been skyrocketing since the combine and he has a good chance of going in the teens.

by motown313 on Mar 16, 2010 5:57 PM EDT reply actions

no chance

Look at Arron Rogers guys can fall extremly far for no real reason. I do agree he is likley a 1st rounder now.

How do you keep a running back out of your secondary? You put up a LEVY.

by The Profiler on Mar 16, 2010 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

it usually only happens to QB's

like Brady Quinn, Aaron Rogers, etc, or guys with character issues. Kyle Wilson is neither of these. Of course there is always a possibility, but it’s very, VERY doubtful in this case that he makes it to the second round.

by motown313 on Mar 16, 2010 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

no I agree

we will likely have to trade up if he have much hope of getting him.

oh yeah?

How the hell does a guy’s stock rise since the combine when he didn’t workout?

by TheOriginalVoice on Mar 16, 2010 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

He did workout

he just didn’t run the 40 because he tweaked his hamstring. Maybe you should do more research next time you try to check somebody.

by motown313 on Mar 16, 2010 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know who I'd like

Pouncey presents a lot of value since he can play Guard and eventually move over to Center. Robinson, Ghee and McCourty are strong selections also. CB is a big need and I think we really need to address it early. Maybe those players can help us. We should have a lot of options at the top of the second.

Kyle Wilson

Even if we have to trade up to get him. Next time, include him as an option.
