The Ultimate Draft Day Conspiracy Theory

It is 2 am in Detroit and my restless mind wanders once again in anticipation of the NFL draft. News of the NFL free agency has been coming in from many sources and my mind starts to connect the dots. The Lions are making a big splash in free agency this year. The Lions are pulling the trigger on some trades and inheriting some big contracts. The Lions already have some big contracts on the roster. The Lions have a stigma of being a team that will overpay due to lack of team performance. This is an uncapped year true, however a collective bargaining agreement is expected to be made and a salary cap will be in place again. The front office and coaching staff continually reference looking forward in how transactions will impact your team. The Lions have been openly shopping the number two pick. Many speculate that they do not want to pay for a top 5 contract and feel they can find equal talent lower in the draft. All of these dots are connecting in my mind and then Saints restricted free agent Anthony Hargrove shows up in town. More dots connect. Most people think that the Lions third round pick is too expensive given that it is essentially a late second round pick. The Saints have been very stingy with money during this uncapped off season. The Saints just won the Super Bowl and they do not have a lot of holes to fill. Could some shocking blockbuster deal being worked out with the Lions and Saints or will it just be another medium level trade between the two for Hargrove? Will the Lions manage to get this guy for a fifth round pick or well we see another blockbuster like the Ricky Williams trade? Would the Saints be willing to give up every pick in this years draft, or possibly first round picks from multiple years to land the likes of Ndamukong Suh? Could multiple players from the Saints be coming to Detroit for the second overall pick, possibly a starting CB and DT? Maybe I just have too much idle time on my hands, but I thought it was an interesting enough thought to share with others.

Though a team may have little to do in building...

…they still need to consider the future. That is why I find it hard to believe that the Saints would do anything too too crazy to pick up one player.

We are talking about the Super Bowl Champs here, they don't have to do anything crazy.

They will not stand pat, but will use their draft picks to fill various holes. They have a few spots on their defence that could use upgrading. ie. a DT like Brian Price, Cam Thomas, Jared Odrick, Lamarr Houston, Arthur Jones -someone to go next to Sedrick Ellis and upgrade their run defence.
OR a DE like Carlos Dunlap, Everson Griffen, CJ Wilson, Austen Lane, Corey Wooton, to replace Charles Grant and improve their pass rush.
OR a OLB or two like Sean Weatherspoon, Perry Riley, AJ Edds, Dekoda Watson, Daryl Washington, Navarro Bowman, etc.

I cannot see the Saints giving up most of this year and some of next year for Suh. Sure he would upgrade their line and defence, but the price [including his big contract] would be too high.
Also, I think it is very doubtful that the Saints will let Hargrove walk for less than a third round pick. They need youth and depth at both D Line spots which is what Hargrove has/does.

That's true, Suh would have a big contract

If a team could get a DT who is as effective in their particular defensive system much cheaper, that would be good.

From my understanding

the Saints have little to no money to spend right now. I’d be pretty shocked if they traded for our #2 pick and all the guaranteed money that comes with it.

The Saints are restricted by the NFL rules in signing FA this year since they are

The Superbowl Champions their hands are tied. So they are being very selective on what they are doing.

What IF ........

Detroit gave the Saints there 1st and 3rd rounders for Hargrove and the Saints 1st and 2nd rounders ?? Maybe another low rounder and or a future pick in the 2011 draft. People say the Saints pay roll is to high for a #2 pick, The Saints could STILL trade it down as well. This is just for out there kinds, fun thinking I guess. Nothing serious.
