Concerns about Peppers?
I'm not sure if this has been discussed (I'm still new guys), but this was something I just noticed while looking through Julius Peppers stats. I know a lot of people feel that we just need a guard to shore up the O-line, and that Backus is fine at LT. However, Julius Peppers has played the Lions 4 times in his career, and in those 4 games has a total of 7 sacks, all at RE and all with Backus being at LT. I understand this isn't entirely Backus' fault, but now that we're gonna be seeing Peppers twice a year, should we be concerned? What do you guys think?
EDIT: For whatever reason, I thought Peppers played RE his whole career, which is inaccurate. He's played both ends, so Backus may not be to blame.

Yes.
You should always be concerned with our offensive line’s performance. However, with Peppers being in a new defense, it could go either way, to be honest. The Lions need to do more, regardless, in the way of building the offensive line so that Stafford can play more than 8-10 games a year.
GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!
i rookie LT wouldnt be alot worse then backus..
esplay sinc backus would need to be moveed inside.. 2 players that have never played that positon at the pro level?? yea fuck that

Peppers lines up equally right and left...
Gosder needs to up his game…and yes, we need to shore up the line.

while it’s true that a rookie wouldn’t nessecarily be better than Backus, some have come in and dominated like Long and Oher (which pisses me off for obvious reasons). That being said i’m not sure if Okung would be able to block Peppers better than Backus or Gosder…but what do I know.
they gotta get Gaither from Ravens 6ft 9 monster. Cost them there 2nd + maybe a pick next year Schwartz is good at deals
That is pretty expensive. Gaither looks impressive but..........................
What was the injury last year? Head injury. Yeah, I remember that. Looked very bad for awhile. Utley type injury. He had some ankle problems in 2008 training camp.
Wiki says rumours are that Washington has offered their 2010 second round pick. I think that would be a fair trade for Detroit. # 34 for a young experienced LT. I am okay with that, nothing more.

While I would have liked Oher in hindsight...
He didn’t win the LT position right? They moved him to RT if I am not mistaken, and he only played LT when Gaither was hurt for 5 games.
I don’t expect most draftees to come in as the LT encumbent. I think they either line up at LG to learn from the LT or move them to RT.
It seems like that even happened with Tony Casillas his first year. He suited up at LG.

That is the point of taking Okung. He is considered "NFL ready".
Every rookie has some adjustments to make, but Okung is considered very, very good at pass blocking so he would likely play at LT from day one. If he does end up in Washington, he will start their first game. Ditto for KC.
If you pick an LT prospect later, he will likely need some work to get up where Okung is now.
As far as how he will do against Peppers, Matthews, and the Mullet? I think he will do well, but he will be a rookie. They are all just prospects and are somewhat unknowns to us.
Wasn't Jason Smith considered NFL ready last year?
Would Okung have been drafted before him?

Excellent question footstock
Here is a link from nfl.com concerning Jason Smith before the 2009 draft. http://www.nfl.com/draft/2009/profiles/jason-smith?id=71471 They both excell at pass blocking, but IM, Smith was slightly better at run blocking than Okung. My guess is that Okung would be rated just slightly behind Smith on most boards.

Lets put it this way:
There is no tackle in the NFL or the draft that will come in and dominate Peppers. Backus is good enough for now. The only guy I would consider bringing in would be Jared Gaither because hes got NFL experience, and played the Steelers twice a year,so he knows how to block elite pass rushers. Okung would be a solid long-term option, but I don’t think hes worth the 2nd pick

Peppers has always been a very good DE
we’ve had a bad line his entire career. Is it all that surprising he’s whooped our asses?
Of course not
but that doesn’t mean we just accept that he’s gonna continue to whoop our ass. It’s something that needs to be addressed.
Peppers is not the only problem.
Kampman ran all over Cherilus last season, and Minnesota’s "AWWE"some defensive line abused us, Edwards did the most damage but that is just because of all the double teams the other guys got. We need SERIOUS help on the offensive line. I know I rip on Raiola a lot but I do like him as a person, I don’t think he is so much horrible as overpaid. An average center making star money. Gosther will get another chance but Jansen should keep him on a short leash, and I hope Schwartz is willing to pull the trigger on starting Jansen at RT, cause last year it would have been a big upgrade to have Jansen in over Gosther. Now back to Backus. I think he can be an all pro type of LG so drafting a LT makes a ton of sense. Especially since I think some of these LTs will dominate in year one, maybe one or two of them. So if we get a LT first and don’t bust on the pick we could see upgrades at LT, LG, and RT this year. If Raiola and Peterman can be solid we should be fine on the line.
Jansen didnt play all that well either
Hes a back-up at this point of his career
The beginning of the end of the misery
Backus and raiola
For the last 10 years the lions have been trying to bild a line around them and I think they have been the problem.Backus is a right tackle at best.Raiola needs to be protected.Which meens we need a new center
agreed......good person in raiola sticks up for stafford but shouldent any center stick up for his rookie qb?

For all the Backus haters:
I was gonna post these stats along with a fanpost I’m working on, but I guess I’ll post it here first. In 2002, Joey Harrington got sacked only 8 times in 12 games, and in 2003 he got sacked 9 times in 16 games. In fact, Peyton Manning got sacked twice as much as Harrington in 2003. Guess what, Backus and Raiola were achoring that line back then, and we all know that Harrington didn’t have the slightest bit of pocket presence.
So, can he (Backus) be a solid LT? Yes, but we shouldn’t expect him to be an elite one.

An undiscussed factor.
Just who where the quarterbacks in those games? Guys like Jon Kitnta? Stafford being a man with a bit of a head on his shoulders and young running legs he might avoid a few, short of the blind side ones.
Actually, it's the opposite.
Stafford is a little too gutsy for his own good. There were a number of times last season where he took a hit that he really didn’t need too. I’m hoping after his injury he’ll play a little smarter. There’s a reason you don’t see guys like Brett Favre and Peyton Manning ever get injured, they’re smart enough to know it’s not worth taking a hit when you don’t need too.
Peppers is a HOF DE
But…he is getting older. I think he will be good, but not great. Jared Allen is much more of a threat in our division to hurt Stafford IMO

I'm not sure I agree.
Allen hasn’t been as dominant against us as Peppers (6 sacks over 5 games as compared to 7 sacks over 4 games for Peppers) and if it wasn’t for the aging Williams wall I doubt Allen would be that successful. Also, Allen doesn’t have the size and explosiveness of Peppers, Peppers looks like his goal is to injure the QB on every play. I saw a hit he put on Aaron Rodgers on Youtube, I’m surprised the guy isn’t paralyzed from the neck down.
i think the lions gm who just pick a qb with 1pick in the draft last year in draft will think very hard about drafting the bpa at ot in this draft witch is russell okung why beause qb got hurt last yearand beause poor offensive line play last year . the lions have pickup a de/dt/cbs/ in fa or trades to improve their defensive play for next year and will draft more help this year .bu so far on offensive side of the ball they have pickup only a wr/rb/kr/ and know offensive line help in fa or trades .they could go offensive line in the 2rd but would the player you pick their be able to start right way like a 1rd pick in draft who might be a allpro ot for ten years like russell okung . ido like ndamukong suh at dt but he has all ready had knee surgery and might only play like a allpro for 5to 7years beause of the type of player he is on defensive line who will be doulble team all the time.
If not Okung...
Then they better get a good guard before there gone!
Good guards should be available in the 3rd
