If I were Mayhew at the Draft

While I was walking my dog this morning, freezing my ass off again, I was thinking about something that WAREDAWG wrote regarding the Ravens shopping their current LT Jared Gaither. The more I thought about him and what I had read about him the better I liked the idea of trading for him. This guy is six feet nine inches tall and 340 pounds. He just turned 24  [last Thursday] and has over two years of NFL experience. He has been the starting LT for twenty-six games for the Ravens in that time. He missed five games last year due to a serious/scary neck injury, but is pretty clean besides that.

Here is a link fro the Ravens SB site [Baltimore Beatdown] and a FanPost regarding the trade rumours.

http://www.baltimorebeatdown.com/2010/3/10/1366782/jared-gaither-deal-or-no-deal

If I were Mayhew on draft day I would do the following:

1. Ignore any trade offers for the # 2 pick, unless they are beyond amazing, and take Suh. Don't worry he will be there. Bang, D Line is now top ten in the league.

2. Trade our # 34 pick to the Ravens for Gaither. Schwartz has already said that Backus can play LG and Jeff is on board with this move. I'm sure they have already spoken to him about this. Bang, O Line upgraded. A lot.

3. At # 66, choose the best secondary player available; D. Stuckey, R. Jones, B. Ghee, A Spievey, D. Franks, P. Robinson, whoever. We need some help back there and one of these guys could help. My preference is for a CB.

4. At # 97 take the best of M. Hardesty RB, J. Jerry G, AJ Edds OLB, T. Gerhart RB, A. Lane DE, J. Ford WR, A. Dixon RB, or any of the secondary guys who have fallen out of the third round.

5. At # 129 it's time to look for bargains. Antonio Brown WR for the slot is one good option. I am sure our competent scouts have identified some other players.

6. Round seven? I'll be asleep on the couch. Pick whoever is at the top of our board. BPA all the way.

Would be nice

I want Suh as much as anybody, do you really think Suh will move our D-line into the top 10 that quickly.

As long as Gaither health checks out go ahead and get him, just scares me of what type of money he will ask for.

I went through the team line ups and compared personnel to figure which lines might be the best.

I fudged a bit with some teams because there are a lot of 3-4 teams. I used their best OLB as a DE to compare as fairly as possible.

D Lines that would be better than Detroit’s: Ravens, Bears, Cowboys, Packers, Vikings, Patriots [not by much], Saints [not by much either], Jets [close too, depends on Jenkins], Eagles and Redskins. That’s the way I see it. Pass the Kool Aid please.

It is not just Suh, it is the other moves that have been made too.

We would have a great three man rotation at DT of Suh, Hill [just going into his second year] and Corey W. . Our DEs would be KVB, and Hunter or Avril to start, with Turk McBride backing them up. I like the sound of that group.
I see these guys getting good pressure against the pass and some serious run stuffing ability with Hill and Suh.

The key is Suh. If he is as good as advertised, he will need a double team which should help Hill and Corey W. to make plays and take most of the help away from the Tackles against our DEs.

Sorry North it's been a long time

I have a hard time thinking about the Lions D-line getting constant pressure on the QB. anytime you put the lions in the top ten of anything good I do a double take.

If it helps you...

…think back to when Robert Porcher was in his prime and before Luther Ellis got hurt…

This is

Possibly the best possible outcome on draft day. I approve of every move their but they tendered Gaither with a first round pick so they would need to agree to trade gaither for our 2nd round pick. Otherwise this would be perfect good job.

by David7 on Mar 20, 2010 4:56 PM EDT reply actions

That may be what they tendered him, but realistically no one except one of the last four teams or so would give up their first round pick for him.

The offer is negotiable. # 34 is pretty much a pick that you should be able to pick up someone who has slipped out of the first round for reasons which usually turn out to be nonsense.

I think Ozzie Newsome is a good enough evaluator of talent that he knows he can probably get a top twenty-five player on his board with that pick.

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 20, 2010 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Ozzie is EXCELLENT!

SO, what’s the catch? Why is he trying to unload him? Can’t Oher stay ont he right side or move Gaither to the left?

I am VERY suspicious of this, as Ozzie is TOO smart to give up on 24 year old talent!

Just give me 25 guys on the last year of their contracts; I'll win a pennant every year....Sparky Anderson

Yes, this is a good point footstock.

My Dad always was wary of used cars because he did not believe that anyone would sell a perfectly good car. He always thought that there was something wrong.

Gaither is a young guy who has played for two years and been in the league for three. He has played at a pretty high level when he has started. His one fault seems to be his high number of penalties. He has picked up twenty penalties in his last twenty-seven games. That is pretty high. But that seems nit picky to me.
I have read a few Raven fan comments that felt that Ozzie did not want to pay Gaither the big bucks that his position and performance would demand. I don’t know about that. Good LTs are hard to find. unless he feels Oher is better and wants to move him over, then sign a younger and cheaper RT prospect. I really don’t know.

I like gaither too

Very solid player, and a monster of a human. Personally, I think there is some value in the league for Backus, maybe as high as a low third rounder, so I would try to trade him.

The beginning of the end of the misery

HMMMMMMM

Isn’t it retarded the shit we think of……..What else is scary is I like the rest of your draft idea
I was reading Ravens fan blog and I think Lions 2nd rounder would be enough. It’s almost like a 1st without the 1st round money (better than a late 1st?)………… I would keep Backus though and slide him LG (latif)…..IMO

by WAREDAWG on Mar 20, 2010 5:47 PM EDT reply actions

Hey man, it was your idea.

If you read the comments of the Ravens fans they are concerned about the contract that they believe he will be demanding and that Ozzie does not want to pay that money to Gaither.

I also read at least one comment that said Gaither is not a very hard worker. He implied that Gaither is lazy. Not sure where that came from.

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 20, 2010 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Gaither

I read that too. Maybe you can get picky when you have 2 starting LT’s. I completely understand they don’t want to pay 2 guys LT money, and it sounds like neither 1 wants to play any other position $$$ Lions are going to have to pay someone big money to upgrade that position at some point. I looked at Pro Football Focus had him rated top 6 LT in 08 and Top 4 in 09 (11 games) he might be lazy but he’s good and thats where Mayhew and the gang come into play about his character deal. I think the way they do these contracts theres a lot of money left on the table if the guy bales. I think this guys proven he can do it, and thats about as far as I can see from the outside looking in.

I would be on board with these ideas NL12

Good post.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

Thanks. I'm straying from BPA a bit.........

but Gaither seems to me the best player at # 34 compared to the other prospects.
The third round pick also focuses on the secondary, but I think the Lions have to dedicate some picks to upgrading that unit and I have a tough time believing that they would have to reach very far to get a CB or S at # 66.

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 20, 2010 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

I think Gaither would be superior to any guard we could get in the draft, including Iupati, in round 2. I also believe our pick should be Suh if he is available at pick 2. If we intended to get Gaither in round 2, that would also support my idea of drafting Berry at pick 2 if Suh goes #1. Then we could still get a corner in round 3 and make HUGE strides on defense, while upgrading the O-line at the same time.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

i was thinking that too....

just have Follett bum rush Mayhew’s office.

Follett: " Mr. Mayhew, I got your drafting strategy right here."
Mayhew: " Umm. Okay Zack. Just put down on my desk. And try not eating anyone on your way out."

Don't really no enough about Gaithers to comment

but from what I’ve heard he’s a good young talent. Definitely not a bad idea.
