Different Take on Suh

Interesting article from Killer today regarding majority of Lions nation’s dream target.

Does this change your view of Suh? What if he demands #1 overall money because he is regarded as the most talented player in this years draft? Just like Crabtree, holding out because he considered himself a top 5 pick, and the best WR in last years draft? I understand the #2 overall pick will make a lot of money, but could he possibly hold out for Stafford/Bradford money? And if so, do you pass on him and target Okung/McCoy/Berry? But if you look at the money, #2 overall is too much money for a Safety. Sorry to ramble.

You can’t pass on a talent like that just because of what might happen with his contract. In the last few seasons I belive (may be wrong) I think the only major holdouts were russel and quinn (had some contract issues with elevators) and crabtree that dosen’t mean Suh will do that. Even still most of that has to do with agents not the player. I wouldn’t avoid him just because of that.

How do you keep a running back out of your secondary? You put up a LEVY.

then take mccoy

i dont see a lot of downside with taking mccoy, they’re both good players. if suh is going to bring trouble, take mccoy. besides, i thought mayock had mccoy as #1 on his board.

by kingdaddylions on Mar 21, 2010 3:27 PM EDT reply actions

He's weak....a developmental player at his position

That’s the downside. He is a great player with good technique. Good enough technique that his lack of strength did not show as much at the COLLEGE level. In the NFL, that same lack of strength is going to handcuff Gerald McCoy…bet on it.

lack of strength?

based on what, his bench? developmental player? he’s a top prospect, not developmental player. maybe you’re confusing upside with development….

by kingdaddylions on Mar 21, 2010 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes and No

Yes, his bench at the combine is a red flag that directly correlates with his lack of strength. That coupled with the fact that I have witnessed him play with my own eyes, and seen his lack of strength hinder him at the collegiate level. I am one of the guys who pointed out his lack of strength BEFORE the combine. And no, I am not confusing “upside” with development. Clearly, the kid needs to DEVELOP physically before he will be a legitimate dominating DT at the NFL level. He does has a HUGE upside, and I agreed to that with my statement that “he is a great player with good technique”. IF he can DEVELOP physically, so that he can couple true STRENGTH with a polished set of technical abilities, then his UPSIDE will lead to the fruition of him actually becoming a solid pro player at his given position…in the future. He will not DEVELOP the required strength in a few months. It will take years.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

Was he explosive because he was playing against secondary competition?

Or was he explosive because he is just that damn good? THAT my friend is the question, and I believe the answer is clearly in the title. Watch him against OK State….they are not even the best team he played against, and he was a NON FACTOR.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

strong opinion

i have to say you have a pretty strong opinion on this guy. if you’ve watched him in person and dont like what you see, then you’ve convinced me.

by kingdaddylions on Mar 22, 2010 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Define "in person".....lol

I saw him play live on TV, in HD. I was not physically at the game, but i did pay close attention to his play. This was not the only game i watched of his, where he struggled, either. I also thought his lack of strength showed in the game against Texas this year, and when he did make it through the line he was often out of position.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

by KDawg on Mar 22, 2010 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Just so you know

I am not an expert by any means, but I do tend to be right….lol….j/k

I played DT in a 4-3 in HS, and my brother played DE in a 4-3 in college (I lost interest in playing football competitively…but I never lost interest in the game). I am a student of the game, and I would say that I am a pretty knowledgeable guy when it comes to talent and how it will transition to the NFL. However, this does not mean I can not be wrong. If I am wrong about McCoy, I will humbly admit it and move on.

That said, every fiber of my being screams NO to McCoy!

some one brought this up on another blog i read

l the difrenc in this is that suh will go
2nd over all not 1st
insted of
10th over all not 7th(crabtree)

and suh will be the 1st DT taken not the 2nd.. cant really compare the 2

I still want suh

regardless of cost (obviously within reason)

I brought this up like a month in a half ago

when Suh first signed with Parker. The Crabtree deal was an isolated situation. Mostly, Parkers clients sign on time and with a reasonable contract.

Crabtree's holdout was the fault of Crabtree and his uncle (advisor)

Not the agent.

I also noticed

Kevin Seifert posted another article on espn.com about why the Lions might not want to take Suh at two.

Crabbtree hold did nothing

He basicly signed the same contract that was offered to him before the hold out.

Give the FO this, their usually pretty good about getting there drafts picks signed…

by msivits on Mar 21, 2010 5:22 PM EDT reply actions

I'm sure those things will come into mind

They might try to gauge which prospect will be easy to sign, or harder. If Suh proves tough to sign, which I don’t think he will, they might try Okung/McCoy.

2 questions-
  1. I realize that the #1 pick can negotiate and sign before the draft, and that no other picks can be signed before the draft. HOWEVER, can discussions take place with their agents before the draft to gauge financials?
  2. Is the money ALWAYS based on the draft position or does the players position go into account? It seems like Matt Ryan made more than the picks in front of him. Will Suh at number 2 be cheaper than Bradford at number 2?

Thanks in advance…

by footstock on Mar 21, 2010 10:48 PM EDT reply actions

Answers:

1. Yes, teams can negotiate with the player’s agent if said team has the no. 1 pick.

2. No, it’s not always based on the draft position. The Matt Ryan situation you pointed out is a good example. Suh probably won’t make at 2 what Bradford would, but the difference between the two would not be substantial. It also depends on what the player’s agent is telling their player; one player may take less money then another would in the same position. Again, you guys have already discussed a good example of that in Crabtree.

Can the Lions discuss the financial objectives of Eugene parker

for Suh before they draft him?

I believe the Lions can begin negations

As soon as the #1 pick is signed. They could theoretically start negotiations Wednesday night/Thursday morning if the Rams were to sign Bradford prior the date.

But I don’t believe they would sign Suh right away. I think Mayhew would hold out till the last second to see if a deal were to be offered. He made it clear that Millen would make a pick and moments later a team would call with an offer.

I am not worried for two reasons.

1) The Lions will not pick someone they cannot sign.
2) I am confident that they have McCoy rated higher on their board anyways.

by Evilsmurf on Mar 22, 2010 1:16 AM EDT reply actions

Really? Based on.....?

Here is what I know:

  1. When Vandenbosch was signed he said “Suh is the best defensive lineman I have ever seen in college” AND “When coach schwartz told me the plan that they had and the players they were looking to bring in, it made me feel really comfortable that we could turn it around.”
  2. In an interview with Raiola he said “Suh is an unbelievable talent. If he is there when we pick, there is no question who we will take”.
  3. Marcellus Wiley said that if given the choice to say suh would be a pro bowler or hall of famer, he said “Hall of Fame”.
  4. Takeo Spikes said “Suh is a game changer. He sacks the quarterback, tackles the ball carrier, intercepts passes, and gets down field to tackle wide receivers. The guy is everywhere, and a defense feeds off that”.
  5. Marshall Faulk said, “There is no question I would take Suh”.

I have yet to hear one NFL player, current or former, that has said that they would take anyone over Suh—-McCoy included. I don’t believe Vandenbosch was excited because he heard we were goign to sign Corey Williams. He was excited about SUH!

Mayhew is a former player, and he sees what all of these other players see, AND he listens to these players comments too. Schwartz knows he can build the OL in later rounds, and that a great defense is the quickest way to respectability.

So there, I have made my case as to why they will draft Suh. What do you base your opinion on?

PS>>>

did you know that Suh had more tackles in his senior year than McCoy had in his whole career?

It is a no brainer

Suh is head and shoulders above Gerald McCoy in every aspect of the game. If the Lions select gerald McCoy, and Suh is available, I think my opinion of Mayhew and Schwartz will waver badly.

That's a great stat, Footstock!

It’s no contest. Like KDawg says, Suh is head and shoulders above McCoy.
