Mock draft stunner
So the SBNation official mock draft is going on now. I know many of us checked out after Sean submitted the Suh pick, but the blogger for the Seahawks blindsided conventional wisdom with the 6th overall pick. With Eric Berry still on the board, along with Spiller, Bulaga, and other talents for the OT/playmaker less Hawks, the pick came in and they went with....
Taylor Mays, S, Southern California
(http://www.mockingthedraft.com/2010/3/25/1387179/2010-sb-nation-nfl-mock-draft)
I'm mentioning this not because the Hawks blogger is an idiot. I'm saying it cause he's a genius. Don't forget the most important rule of draft season: GM'S ARE F**KING CRAZY! Peter Carroll would totally lobby to bring his boy to Seattle with him, and the logic behind the pick is completely legitimate. Is it a good pick? Of course not! But it could totally happen and, honestly, we should probably expect it. The top couple pick (including ours) will probably play out as we expect, but you just know that crazy stuff is going to happen, including the possibility of us using our 2nd rd pick to sneak back into the first round should one of our guys fall (and there's a very decent chance one of our guys will fall).
Draft fever! I love it!

as crazy as GM's are. . .
i can’t imagine mays going in the top 10. . .i agree that crazy things happen. . .especially when the raiders are concerned but i just don’t think mays is that good of a player. . .he reminds me of roy williams, who can lay the wood but can’t cover. . .
If a team has an all world center field FS like Ed Reed
They they can afford to take Mays and play him up on the line…You can just use him like a roving LB
But the Ravens are the only team that have Reed, so you are right LOL,.

Nah... won't happen
I think even Carroll knows that Mays’ last season really exposed some flaws in his game. There are much better Safety prospects than Mays in the draft. I think the guy drafting for the Seahawks tried to get a little too cute by connecting the dots with the USC alums and in doing so, made himself look foolish. Genius? Ummm… not the word I’d use. Millen? Yeah… you’re getting warmer…..
nice Millen name drop. . .
i also wouldn’t have associated the pick with genius. . .but don’t underestimate Al Davis. . .after last years first two picks for the Raiders. . .nothing would shock me this year. . .
The sad thing is...
…that Al Davis used to be one of the best owners in Football in terms of trying unconventional things and making them work. I guess its like someone once said about SF writer James Hogan “Its only a short walk from interesting free-thinker to crackpot” (which was true in Hogan’s case, and may well be true of Davis as he spoils his legacy).

oh, I don't think the pick is genius
I think the pick is stupid. And we all know the pick is stupid. I think the blogger was smart to factor in how crazy GM’s can be. With all due respect to our scouting abilities, we honestly have no idea what goes on behind closed doors. Taylor Mays probably deserves a top 10 pick more than Darrius Heyward-Bey did. A couple of years ago everyone picked Ted Ginn Jr. to go late in the first round and he was a top 10 pick. It only takes one owner/gm/coach to fall in love with a player and throw our entire mock draft on its head.

Heres something you guys are not thinking about.
The guy that drafted for the Seahawks, probably lives out on the West coast, So he probably didn’t get to see Berry as much as us.I would bet that he probably had USC thrust down his throught and Mayes being kind of the face of that Defence last year, I can understand how he drafted him over Berry.Let me ask all of our NON-Americans here if they really knew who either of these guys were prior to us talking then up? Or even better Cruise(Bishop) how often did you get to see east-coast teams play last year?? And of those handful of times how many of those games did NOT include Florida gators/Alabama/Notre Dame.

100% chance that Mays is taken in the first round
I hate USC, and I’m not a big mays proponent, but he’s just the kind of player that a team like san diego or the colts would take a flyer on as a high upside type.
Here is something to consider nate...
and I don’t know the answer, and you probably don’t either.
Carroll has been a head coach in the NFL before, and he knows that his job security depends on wins…not loyalties.
True, Carroll recruited and coached mays, but I don’t know if he feels that he is an NFL player or not. Based on Mays’ regressing performance over the last 2 years, he might actually be disappointed in him that he never reached the level that he thought he would.
And if I am drafting AFTER Seattle’s second 1st round pick, and he doesn’t take Mays, that would be my red flag to pass on him too.
I agree with you that someone will take mays in the 1st just based on his amazing athleticism and potential. I wouldn’t do it, but someone will.
Just give me 25 guys on the last year of their contracts; I'll win a pennant every year....Sparky Anderson
Good Point
Definately, if the man who coached him for four years doesnt take him at 14th, I would be very wary about taking Taylor Mays. With that said, I think there is a very high chance Mays ends up in Seattle because 1) Seattle needs a safety, and 2) Carrol knows Mays, which makes him one of the safest picks in the draft from Seattle perspective (assuming Carrol likes Mays)

Right Footstock, and remember this too........
In the 2006 Draft, most “experts” thought that the Tennessee Titans, picking 3rd, were a lock to pick USC QB Matt Leinart over Jay Cutler and Vince Young, since Tennessee’s new Offensive Coordinator was Norm Chow, who was Leinart’s OC at USC. As we know, the Titans chose Vince Young instead.

If he slid to the second round he would be worth it but I see too much bust potential to take a swing in the firrst round and hope to get a hit.
If hes there at 34
I say take a chance. The guy can’t cover, but hes big enough to play linebacker, and he is an outstanding tackler, so we could try him out there

For those of you who didn't click on the link
Here is the logic of the Seahawks blogger. It’s actually pretty compelling (and by that I mean it’s compelling that Carroll would make this pick, not compelling that it’s a good idea):
“Seattle is seemingly out of the quarterback sweepstakes after investing in Charlie Whitehurst. The three line talents worthy of this pick are gone. That leaves Eric Berry. Or one might assume. I would select Eric Berry, but I think Pete Carroll would select Taylor Mays.
Carroll likes large, fast, hard-hitting safeties. In New England, he inherited Willie Clay (5’10", 193 pounds), and replaced him with Tebucky Jones (6’2", 218). At USC, he inherited Troy Polamalu (5’10", 207), and replaced him with Darnell Bing (6’2", 220). He recruited Josh Pinkard (6’1", 215), and replaced him with Taylor Mays (6’3", 230).
Mays is the most talented safety prospect in the history of Madden Football. He is tall. He is exceptionally fast – so fast that some feel a need to exaggerate his speed. He is linebacker big, and linebacker strong, but can jump like a cornerback. If his tools could be distilled down to SPD, STR, and ACC, he would be an unstoppable force in deep cover, an intimidating in-the-box presence and a dangerous interception threat. This thinking assumes that Mays’ problems are mental. I think what we interpret as mental mistakes might be physical limitations.
Mays is not a guaranteed bust, but clearly, if he was going to develop commendable cover skills, he probably would have already. His path to NFL success is as an in-the-box safety that functions a bit like a linebacker. Mays would make sense in a 46 defense. Mays could replace Deon Grant. Grant spent a lot of snaps in the box, and in that one, narrow function, I am sure Mays would be better than Grant; better than Berry."
I don't know about this
if you had told me he took Mays at 14, I would beleive it, but I don’t see Carrol reaching that far for a guy just because he played for him. Even at 14 Mays is a reach, but at 6 there’s a potential for some severe backlash from the fans. If I were a Seahawks fan and they picked Mays at 6, I would be beyond livid.

I'd be happy as hell Evil"papa"smurf
i was all over his and Berry’s nutz after the draft last year saying if we could land one of these 2 this year our secondary would be a force to be reckoned with for a long time.I still think that 1 of the top3 safeties will be there when we draft at 34.No way Berry will be there but either Mayes or Earl"the pearl" from Texas could damn well possibly be there when we draft at 34.
