Marion Barber a DETROIT Lion !?
The thought crossed my mind months ago when the rumblings of Barber losing his starting job began in Dallas... I did not think (at his age and experience) it could happen so fast but Felix Jones is younger and must be hungry for grabbing Barbers starting spot.
Marion Barber a Detroit Lion? Would you want a young drafted rookie, Barber, 27 (for a negotiated pick) or another free agent not dropped yet or stay with what we have? We missed out on Thomas Jones who got picked up by the Kansas City Chiefs that would have not have cost a pick. The Dallas Cowboys organization surely would like to get a pick back from the Lions fleecing to acquire Roy Williams.
Barber showed signs of life last year but was injury prone... but he could be the power back we have always wanted (if fully healthy)... at a price .. a big contract and a pick? Could he regain his starting form as the main running back in Detroit? Hmmm Marion Barber and Kevin Smith? I rub my hands together wondering what could be??
Your thoughts on if this is even an option?

It makes sense to get him
If we only give up a low enough pick. In my mind I would rather have picks even through the 5th round over a running back who is closing in on 30. Barber is talented but later round running back have historically been solid and this year appears to be a deep class so the major questions that need to be asked on this potential trade are who is going to be at whatever pick we give up and when is K smith going to be 100% because if he will be ready for opening day there is no need to make this move.
I say draft a rookie.
We can surely get Gerhart, Tate, or Blount in the 4th or 5th round. All of them will have a lot more upside and be cheeper as stated. The problem with Barber is, the way he plays, its not an if he will get injured again, its a when.
Why not, could be the next Cedric Benson
Barber was once voted, by NFL player’s, as having the nastiest stiff arm in the game. He has talent, has experience, but should still have at least a few more good seasons. And since we can guarantee a lot of carries, on top of our FA upgrades, he might actually want to come here.
Yes, durability is a concern. But if he does stay healthy, he could potentially be a Cedric Benson-esque comeback story. A guy playing with a chip on his shoulder (and if the Cowboys get rid of him, believe me, there will be one) is a powerful thing.
The question really is how high of a pick the ‘Boys would want. I think I’d be willing to give as high as a fourth rounder, and that may be a bit high. But as I said, if he has a career revival in Detroit, it will be our best move of the offseason.
He's a good player
The question becomes, can Mayhew finnagle this for cheap?

No
Nearing 30, huge contract, not a premium position. That’s all that needs to be said.
From what I could find Barber makes $620K per year now.
He got a $12M signing bonus in 2008. Not sure if the Lions are obligated to pick any of that up.
If not, Barber is not expensive.
They are not.....
…..Detroit only picks up the salary.

Yeah, seriously
If 27 is ‘almost 30’ we might as well dump a RB after his rookie contract every time.
For 620K
bring him here on a short-term deal.
Never underestimate how pissed a talented guy can play after somebody puts him in the garbage.

620K? Barber is due to receive a base salary of $3.86 million and we would surely pick up some of his bonus cost. Link at top.
I say draft a running back if needed.
But if we trade for him we have to pick it up.
They won’t release him straight away. He’s too valuable and they can get a decent return from a team for him.
But then again Jerry Jones is the new Al Davis and is an idiot
Interesting. The data base I used shows him getting a big bonus in 2008, then nothing.

I’m suspecting the USA Today data is incorrect.
I say pull the trigger
The guy is a serious player he plays running back like a linebacker. With no real blocking to talk about a tough physical guy like Marion may be right up are alley. I am satisfyied with what we have but if we can work over jerry jones again ( I think he’s a lion fan at heart lol) to get barber for a mid round or a 2011 pick that would be great. We could have some solid depth and 2 starters on the roster.
Louis Delmas is gonna lay the MAC down on your candyass.
Barber is a beast
He’s the only Cowboy I will call a Cowboy, the rest of the team are Cowgirls.
The ‘Girls should put him back to his original “Finisher” role. I’d love it if the Lions could get him.

Agree....
…..id do whatever it takes to get this guy within reason.

also agree
and can someone explain this to me: the usage of the word “upside” with rookies. listen. if gerhart ends up being half the beast barber is, it’ll be a win for the team that drafts him.
i don’t understand how a back drafted in the 4th or 5th round has more ‘upside’ than marion barber?

and i just have to add this:
in case anyone wants to disagree with me, the ones who are on gerhart bandwagon..if he’s a marion barber, he’s a top 20 pick. simple as that. yet this guy is going to be drafted in the 4th round.

I agree with what your saying but....
Marion barber was drafted in the fourth round too. But Marion has been one of my favorite backs in the league for years now. And if the Leos can pull something off to get him at a reasonable price…DO IT!!!
Does anybody remember this run???

yeah man
i won’t ever discount the chances of finding a gem in the 4th round and on, it is just those players are drafted there for reason. and at this point in time, we have no clue who is going to become an impact player. barber is already one.
i think we’re on the same page =)

Maybe we can hose the cowboys again by trading down with them
Our 2nd for their 3rd and 5th and Barber or something like that?
by WestsideLionsFan on Mar 28, 2010 3:17 PM EDT reply actions
nah, thats not hosing
How about we’ll move down to their 2nd round pick for Barber
The beginning of the end of the misery
I'm on the fence with this one...
He’s got a lot of wear and tear because of his running style. He’s had a lot of injury issues as of late. I do love the way he runs when healthy, though. I HATE the Cowboys, but I must admit I’ve always wished he were in a Lion’s uni.
Ultimately, I think I’d have to pass because we would have to give up a pick to get him in a trade. I highly doubt they release him… although it’s possible if they are really high on Choice. I’d rather use that pick on a back in the draft. If they flat-out release him… sure, pick him up to compete. If healthy, he’s a starter.
Barber would be worth our 2nd round pick next year
trade for him after the draft
http://cmufootball.blogspot.com/
If Barber is owed almost $4Million next year, I would not offer anything more than next years third round pick.
The Lions need to keep their draft picks and rebuild with young players, not keep adding other teams’ castoffs.
BArber ran behind a good offensive line
hardly what he would get in detroit. Plus Marion is to much of a jumper imo.
Does anyone at POD have a buddy who works for the cowboys?
That can put in the good word for us?
I would love to have him for a contingent 6th rounder.
Just give me 25 guys on the last year of their contracts; I'll win a pennant every year....Sparky Anderson
