Adam Jones has no where else to go???

According to Pro Football Talk, the Bengals have dropped out of the running for Adam Jones. So when will he sign with the Lions?

With the reports last week there were only three teams looking at him and supposedly two of them no longer are interested. So all that leaves is the Lions.

It's not about ability or need.....

I have been following the Lions for quite some time and I don’t remember a time in the recent past that I believe they are moving in the right direction with a GOOD coach and seemingly sensible GM. The moves they have made already along with last season’s draft picks are re-shaping the Lions into a potential contender, not immediately, you understand, but they are moving in a POSITIVE direction. The one thing I believe they (Swartz, Mayhew and staff) have addressed is to give the team a whole new level of confidence and a feeling that they CAN win. That is why, I believe, signing Jones would be an unmitigated disaster! I can just see the mixed emotions in the clubhouse when some players feel he is not giving his all. Then things start to get touchy, and the first thing you know, potentially, he starts to pout or brood and goes off on a binge(you can’t change a leopard’s spots!) and the real trouble begins. I believe and am hoping JS does the right thing and says, “thanks, but no thanks!” If not, and they do sign him, I predict there will be trouble before half of the season is over. ….My 2 cents.

on the flip side

maybe he could be used as a cheap example. If we are the only team that’s going to sign him, we can get away with offering the min…..then, if he screws up, schwartz makes an example of him. No player is above the team. I don’t think that will even be an issue though. Schwartz and Co. benched numerous players last year.and I believe the will handle pacman easily. Plus, this is his last shot so he better stay in line or he’s the next charles rogers/mike williams/whomever.

I agree

which is why I’m of mixed feelings about the potential signing. Honestly, if he was that good I think the 9ers or somebody would’ve signed him. I see him as maybe being too far removed from gametime to actually do us much good, but I hope I’m wrong.

I think we've known this for a while

His agent listed the Bengals, Lions, and 49ers as the teams with “serious interest.”

The Bengals worked him out a while ago (sometime in February I believe). I think if they genuinely wanted him, they would have offered him a contract by now, if for no other reason then to make sure another team didn’t scoop him up, especially since at this point Pacman would gladly sign a one-year contract for the league minimum.

The 49ers have already said, flat out, that they don’t want him.

That leaves us, alone. My guess is including those other two teams in the “interested” category were an attempt by his agent to get us to move quickly on him. He knows that if there is only one team with any kind of interest, then we have no reason to rush our decision. And the longer we wait on offering a contract, the worse it looks for Pacman.

Our CB situation is desperate, but the fact that we are the ONLY team in the league showing any genuine interest is disconcerting, to say the least.

I agree, disconcerting indeed.

I was all about bringing him in.. I thought Schwartz knew something the rest of us (and the league) might not… but with literally the entire NFL passing on the guy, at his already reduced price tag- definitely disconcerted.. but we’re 2-14. desperate is another word you used with which I agree.

I have to say that my feelings on the guy have flipped.

At first I was all for bringing him in. But with the games being played by his agent, and the fact that he only shows flashes of brilliance I say screw him. Wade is a lot better than people give him credit for. I actually like Wade, Houston, and DeAngelo Smith. They might not be superstars but they all have the potential to be ones. That is a good 3 core to start with. Add in some of the other vets we have to bring them younger guys along and provide depth and I think we are ok. Sure we still need a CB in the draft but I think that could happen anywhere from the 2nd to 5th round and we will be ok. Keep in mind that some free agents are still out there that might have a year left on their tread, like Lito Sheppard. I would actually rather see them bring in Sheppard on a one or two year deal than get Pacman at this point.

I'm still not hugely excited about him

If he signs, he signs, and I’ll support him, as long as he doesn’t cause trouble. If not, well, that’s no water off my back.

Bring'em out.

Adam Jones is gonna shine in Detroit. I like the fact that Schwartz and the FO are taking there time w/ Jones, it will be a very complex but simple contract. If he does good theres a bonus if he F’s off heres the door. I do like the ideal of bringing Lito Sheppard in for a year or two and more than likely i hope that the Lions draft Donovan Warren in the 3rd or maybe the 4th the kid has got great size and speed, can play all positions in the secondary and w/ Schwartz coaching the kid, can see him being one of the best out of Michigan ever. I like the depth we have w/ Wade and Hobbs both are still young and could turn into solid cb, I see D. Smith playing more at Safety than corner but still could play either s or cb.

Driver's seat

I think we will wait to see what happens with the draft and then be able to sign him if we want at a good deal. If we get a CB in the draft, we can pass. If we do sign him, I suspect that Schwartz will not put up with any crap. If you draft a guy in the first with guaranteed money, he gets some second and third chances – when he is on a minimum salary he gets booted at the first sign of trouble.

we should get him dirt cheap then.

nothing wrong with adding some incentives but we should offer him the minimum base and take him for depth and special teams help…
