Antonio Cromartie has been traded to the Jets

2 things to learn from this:

1. Don’t believe the rumors. Those rumors that he had already been traded to the Lions…….safe to say that wasn’t true.

2. I was watching ESPN, and heard something interesting. Mark Schlereth and the guys were talking about the Cromartie trade. Now, as you know, I don’t blindly believe everything I hear on ESPN, but that doesn’t necessarily mean all of them are always wrong about everything. The 4 of them actually agreed on something that made sense. On what this trade did for the Jets, the agreed that Cromartie, a fast man cover guy, fit well in a Jets defense that was predicated on “pressure, pressure, pressure”, pressure based on “lots of blitzing”, which gave the QB’s little time to throw. Cromartie and Revis don’t have to sit back in zone and decipher plays, they said, but instead can run with their man and man cover with good ball skills….that’s where Cromartie shined with the Chargers.

Hmmmm. Lots of pressure from a defense that blitzes a lot, and talented fast man cover CB’s…….where have i heard that before? Sounds like Gunther’s 2-gap, A-gap, blitzing 4-3 with fast man cover CB’s and Schwart’s fast man cover safeties (like he had in Tennessee with Chris Hope and Michael Griffin). Sure, the Jets blitz out of a 3-4 and the Lions blitz out of a 4-3, but the principles of pressure and blitzing, and roles of the CB’s, are similar.

by sandvet on Mar 5, 2010 1:27 AM EST reply actions

Has this been reported?

he Browns have agreed on a trade that would send DL Corey Williams to the Lions, according to a league source, for a late-round draft pick. The deal is contingent on Williams passing a physical Friday.

The Packers traded Williams to the Browns for a second-round pick in 2008, but he played sparingly in Cleveland. The Lions are trying to rebuild their defense, and the Browns were hopeful of dealing Williams this week before his $1.7 million roster bonus was due.

Just give me 25 guys on the last year of their contracts; I'll win a pennant every year....Sparky Anderson

by footstock on Mar 5, 2010 1:32 AM EST up reply actions

Mortenson sure is twisting himself into contortions trying to justify his pick of Suh

The Lions run a 4-3, 2-gap, A gap defense. Gunther wants “GIANT DT’s”. Their starters last year were 330 Lb SLH and 345+ Lb Grady Jackson. They even tried brining in 330 Lb DT shaun smith. Now Mayhew just signed ANOTHER 320 Lb DT. I like it, and it makes sense based on what the Lions say they want and based on what they have done. ANOTHER player who FITS….imagine that. McCoy doesn’t fit, and Suh maybe fits…..but they went out and got a guy who DOES fit. Yet Mortenson can’t be bothered into checking what kind of defense the Lions actually use, and clings to his Suh pick, twisting himself into knots trying to keep that hope alive. But the handwriting is on the wall. I’m ordering my Eric Berry Jersey.

I totally agree. Two big fat guys can lay down as immovable walls to let the LB’s clean up the run. But what do the big fat guys do to collapse the pocket?

They are too tired and winded from standing up at the snap to push the line back.

Blitzing is a bad way to get to the QB?
That whole huge DT thing didn’t really work out too well last year. That is a horrible idea if you want to get to the QB

And as we get more quality pieces into place, blitzing becomes more effective. Bottom line, this is what Gunther did. Nothing changes. We just got another piece.

307 isn't a small man.

And he’s as strong as an ox with great agility and quickness. He’s not 800 lbs like Gun wants but he’ll be an absolute Monster.

Yep, and that a 307 lb college boy

Two years on his own eating like a fat cat will have him up to 325 easily.

Hey, as long as Zack Follett keeps hitting people, he can rap to Barney the Dinosaur for all I care.

Is Burleson what we need at #2 WR guys?

I am not too familiar with him. 63 catches last year for 860.

Filed to ESPN: Lions wasted no time getting on the board. Free-agent WR Nate Burleson reached agreement with Detroit on a five-year deal.

He's young for this FA class!!`

I just hope he can catch and stay healthy.

THe really good news is...

that the Bears REALLY need wide receivers, and we just beat them to a 28 year old quality guy!

One less potential bullet for the Bears.

Hell yeah!!!!!!

I was hoping we’d get him or Bryant!!! Finally a real #2 receiver to compliment Calvin.

If we can get KVB and Kampman

Suh or Eric Berry would be amazing as draft picks

I assume you mean punt returns?

I am thrilled

I feel confident in this front office for once. I love to see we are actually trying to get better players in here unlike the days of captain fat face.

hmmm

well, that’s overpaying, but that’s par for the course when the Lions woo FAs

by sgdbw90 on Mar 5, 2010 2:25 AM EST up reply actions

well, no

It’s probably 4 a year for the first three years, than 6 than 7. knowing these deals, there’s no way he’ll make it past three years.

by sgdbw90 on Mar 5, 2010 2:29 AM EST up reply actions

I don't care what they have to pay to win...

No cap this year, and only $4,300 of it is coming from me. So, that’s like $81 a player.

They can divvy it up however they please. :-)

Burleson

Seems sorta similar to Northcutt, hopefully he can offer more.

you know

considering mayhew pulled the levy pick out of his ass in round three, i actually have some faith that the lions can remake their o-line somewhere in the second round or later. it’s not like our FA history on the line has been any good.

by sgdbw90 on Mar 5, 2010 2:40 AM EST up reply actions

I think we can go two ways

1. Pick a Guard. Iupati, Jerry, Asamoah, Carter, Petrus etc and hope that stability on the left side helps the overall unit.

2. We pick Okung and shift Backus or Cherilus inside, killing two birds with one stone.

sadly, i really don't think they'll move either of those inside

it makes sense to the fans but not the coaches. perhaps that means it doesn’t actually make sense.

THere are NO quality Lineman in FA market this year

We can get em in the 3rd and later.
