This Way Lies Madness

Credit to RalphGoBlue for this: http://www.prideofdetroit.com/2010/3/8/1362354/if-lions-had-mayhew-instead-of

It provided a doorway that opened onto the path I have traversed for the what may be the last of my conscious efforts in this life. Who knows what lies at the end of this journey for only 52 minutes into my efforts I have already developed a twitch in my eye when forced to look upon this ghastly site.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft?season=2009&round=round1

Credit to Lovecraft for the prose of the first paragraph. It's a boring day...

I guess this is the burning of an effigy for me. Because I'm just kind of sippin on kool-aid today. Someone posted a line up of a likely defense and it looked like a real NFL team. Wowwy

I went and did it. I looked at each round of the last 8 years. The dark years. Here are some highlights from my descent, for those of you who aren't, like, into self torture...me either. But it was like Event Horizon at one point. I hate that movie, but I have to watch it when it's on.

2001- I knew big Jeff was the first pick of the Dark Times, and looking at the first round didn't really bother me, Casey Hampton has been successful, but there wasn't a lot jumping out, til someone remember that Drew Brees is the the first pick of Rd. 2. and having him might have spared us...

2002- Joey "Ballgame" Harrington....let it sink in...OK we missed out on the likes of Albert Haynesworth and Ed "Snoop Dog" Reed. Really 2nd round...Clinton Portis went after Kalimba Edwards. My stomach turns slightly as I think of Sundays gone by without Ed Reed and Clinton Portis in their primes.

2003- Fuck. Charles Rogers ahead of Andre Johnson. Yeah...wait for it, Boss Bailey and Cory Redding ahead of Osi and and Jason Witten respectively.   I know, these aren't highlights, this is the entire account. This is one man's scream from the depths of Hell.

2004- It burns! Roy, Lehman and Kevin Jones...vs....just so frackin many big names. All the people excited about Delmas and Berry...think Ed Reed and Bob Sanders

2005 I get it! 3 wide receivers!! Sounds cool. What? What do you mean bend over? What are those hot coals for? I don't like this anymore! Bye Mr.'s Ware and Merriman. Also bye Mr. Justin Tuck. We'll be sitting next to Stanley Wilson for the duration of this Mephistophalean nightmare.

2006 You know how when you get into a hot tub and it's really super hot and you think you're skin is being seared right the spliff off? Only it's not, you get used to things. This year was maybe like that. Ernie Sims fans are sitting on the jet stream taking the blunt of it.

2007 Calvin "Jules Winfield" Johnson. Someone grabbed the wheel of this Satan driven busride. And then Drew Stanton made Lamarr Woodley and David Harris go to the back of it. See cuz in Hell it's still racism every-gosh damn-where.

2008 Dominque Rodgers Cromartie or Gosder Cherilus is the seventh seal. This is Daunte Culpepper's Inferno

2009 I'm alive! Praise be to the Saints and Martyrs, was it all a dream? The dark times might be over. Things look so...Shiny

I just have a good feeling about this year. And wanted to write after work.

Intresting

I am not giving up on Ernie just yet. He has a better D-line now around him and a solid LB corp I hope it helps a ton. I didn’t hate the Gosder Pick but I was lovin the DR all year and was pretty upset we passed on him. Drew wasn’t the only franchise QB we passed on. I know what happened with Joey but alot of teams would have made that same call. Hell in another situation he might still be starting in the NFl you never know.

Lions fan for life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wonders how you produce 8 seasons of below .500 football and mange to keep your job as a gm.. here's 1 man wondering what kind of black mail Millen had on the Ford family.

LOL that was funny.

Looking back hurts so bad, but looking forward feels so damn good now. I agree with The Profiler that with a better defensive line in front of him Sims mat be able to run free and make plays like he should be able to.

awesome post....

I have said it many times on here. The Mike Williams draft pick was the worst. The Lions were in desperate need of a LB or a DE at the time. And to Draft " Cheeseburger " Williams. It hurts my mind thinking about it. I have a small Williams jersey. That I put on my Rott’s favorite stuff toy( a plush Chicago Bears mascot). And you should see him hump the shit out of that stuff toy. His eyes roll into the back of his head. His tongue is hanging out.

As you said, looking back leads to madness

It’s best not to look back, I don’t think we can learn much from those experiences. Forward with the Schwartz!

Hate to stick up for Millen

But I thought the Joey pick was great, he was amazing at Oregon I think that he only lost like six games his whole career. Plus we needed a quarterback and he was by far the best one that year, other than that I thought his drafts were complete shit.

by lionfan4life on Mar 8, 2010 11:03 PM EST reply actions

2nd best that year!

No way did he have a better year in College than Carr….. But you are right after Carr was drafted I thought that Joey (He is a duck with the heart of a Lion) Harrington was the right pick that year.

Damn

I was all in a good mood thinking about what the team might look like this season and all of a sudden I’m reading this and feeling like I need to get my hands on some Prozac. Depressing stuff, guy. To be fair, a lot of these busts we drafted high were the consensus “right pick”, in particular I remember a lot of folks saying the Texans made the wrong pick by taking David Carr over Joey, and everyone felt Charles Rogers was gonna be a perennial Pro-Bowler.

We just have had shit for luck.

Consensus isn’t the right word here. Gosder? Kalimba?

Here's a good one....

Hey, that’s a neat trick you do, where somebody throws a rock at you and you wave your hand and make it hit something else. Did you ever hear of Ed McMahon and “Star Search”? Do they have “Star Search” in Tibet? Probably not. Probably got “Food Search.” But you know what we could do, is we could all go on “Star Search” and we could give the audience rocks, and have them throw them at you, and then you can wave your hand and make them all hit Ed McMahon – hard.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

Thanks for the rec's

I knew it was a bit of a downer when I read after writing it. I didn’t mean to try to bring anyone down on a good day. I just got caught up in the hypothetical of “what if…” So to those who took it as a downer…lighten the fuck up.

What about Baby New Years HERMAN MOORE! To this day I have never seen ears sticking as far out of someones head as him. I wonder if he had to tape those babies back in order to put his helmet on.

Hindsight is 20/20

Well I am not at all upset at the post. I have been following the draft every year and a lot of the Millen picks were not as bad as you guys make them seem. The truth of the situations is the coaching sucks, hard. Fonts was the last good coach we had. Ross took the love out of the game for Barry. Mooch was decent on O but the D coordinator sucked hard. I liked Rod Marinelli but he was obviously in over his head, and Martz might be a genius but he something went really wrong there, dunno what caused the meltdown. Probably the former front office. Anyhow thank god the Schwartz is with us. Mayhew and Schwartz and the other coaches have given me hope again. BTW we still have the same scouting staff in place that we had under Millen and Marinelli.

Decade of shooting oneself in the foot

Yes…I have my “ooooops!” moments too with past Lion drafts going all the way back to the Terry Fair instead of Randy Moss days. Even last year I wondered why they passed over Michael Oher for Pettegrew. I would love Lions management to allow the fans to sting up a dummy in the likeness of Matt Millen and string it up in effigy over the middle of our bannerless cieling…
