Around SBN: Lance Berkman Could Have Torn ACL

It's all coming Clear too me now

Two days ago the Lions secondary was a mess and in a lot of ways still is.   Now we have Houston, Wade signed our DB back field starts to some clear.   I thought signing KVB and trading for Corey Wiliams would change of draft, but if you get constant pressure on the QB you make your secondary look better.    What made KVB look like a pro bowl DE? Fat Albert, with Suh getting double teamed once again for a year or two KVB could get double diget sack numbers from Suh.   We have a rotating line of SLH and Willams letting Suh attack the QB letting KVB have his way at the QB much like his day's of being a Titan.   Our CB's are already been upgraded with our recent pick up's letting us rush a front four getting to the QB.   It's taken 10 years to  finally get a coach, G.M. to know what there doing but It's happening fast. Our front four will make a pass rush to make up for lack of a secondary, making them look much better than they are.   We are truely in a age of having a modern GM and being up to date....    Can't wait till kick off...   Suh will be our 1st pick allowing all this to happen.

And if Berry is the pick then what say ye?

by ABN_MI_fan on Mar 9, 2010 1:38 AM EST reply actions

Indeed.......the last sentence seemed to contradict the rest of the post

KVB did great because he had a HUGE 350 LB DT next to him.

What made KVB look like a pro bowl DE? Fat Albert

And Mayhew got Williams to pair with SLH…..great move. Now we have 2 of them.
Suh might not fit that.

True

but, on the other hand, SLH might be coming off the bench as well. Nice to have cheap DT depth.

We still have the Suh to St. Louis bet right?? I may lose that one as it turns out. Either way I hope we land him.

Hey NYC...

Yep, the bet is still on. As I said in my original comments on this debate, once the QB hype machine kicks in we will see the tide turning toward getting their QB #1.

It makes sense for them if he checks out. The big day will be his workout at his pro day and the medical evals.

I am still prepared to write your glowing praises about your nostradamus like vision if you are right though!

Good to hear from you!

Suh's not cheap.....and we have our starters now........Linval Joseph is cheap DT depth

Nicer to have 2 great safeties who lead us to the Super Bowl.

Don't be surprised if Okung is the pick at # 2.

I am not convinced it is the best move, but it certainly has more merit based on our recent moves in Free Agency.

It is out of our hands……….in Mayhew/Schwartz……..we trust………..for now. LOL

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 9, 2010 7:51 AM EST reply actions

But hasn’t Schwartz said over and over again they are happy at LT

by EternalOptimist on Mar 9, 2010 9:49 AM EST up reply actions

Yes he has

He thinks Backus is a pro-bowl caliber LT.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

by KDawg on Mar 9, 2010 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

I think he is being supportive of his player and misdirecting other teams.

If the Lions are serious about trading down, it is in their best interests to be as mysterious as possible as to what they will do. Suh? McCoy? Berry? Okung? Keep them all guessing to maintain some flexibility in any potential trade negotiations.

Why would he trash Backus? He will still need him next year……unless they plan to cut or trade him. And that just does not seem to be Schwartz’s style. He is tough and demanding, but he is also a builder who is trying to create a winning atmosphere here in Detroit.

I think the Lions are still weighing their options and continuing the evaluation process. IMO they will continue to change their board based on any new info or because of changing needs due to FA pick ups. We will see.

Hey Sean! Can you get Mayhew on here to chat about his draft board? We can probably help him out with some valuable feedback. LOL

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 9, 2010 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

I'm with you North...

I’m thinking Okung also.

I would look for Okung to immediately start at RT and moving to LT the following season, unless injury sped the process up.

The Lions need a player that can challenge Godsner to bet the tackle he was drafted to be… Jansen sure as hell can’t do it(as proven).

by CLF on Mar 9, 2010 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

I just dont see it

I think the acquisition of Corey Williams has them set to take Berry more than anything. I think we would’ve seen a move (ie releasing/trading Backus) that would indicate they are going after Okung

The beginning of the end of the misery

Why move backus?

Backus has been a solid starter his WHOLE CAREER. 15,000 OCs and 500 systems…. and backus is still starting.

BUT, he’s getting up there…. RT hasn’t been as stable as is a common place to start future LTs.

Oh, and GR… you are SOOOOOO faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar on one side of the fence, its stupid. I hope you don’t hurt yourself on draft day.

But every fence has 2 sides.

The media hype is waaaaaaay on the other side of the fence.

THe biggest thing about Berry @ 2.....

is the compensation/position. He would be the top, if not THE top, paid safety in the league.

That’s a big pill to swallow.

by CLF on Mar 9, 2010 4:35 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks for that, CLF

That’s my whole point. You have to factor in compensation/position. You can’t be blind to those things and just say that the Lions will be too. They won’t. If it’s between Suh and Berry, Suh will likely be the pick. Unless GRLion straps a bomb to his chest and infiltrates the Lion’s war room. Actually, that wouldn’t surprise me….

And yes… he would be the highest paid Safety.

by DrewsLions on Mar 9, 2010 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe, we'll see what Mayhew does

I trust Mayhew, and I don’t sign the checks. Get over it.

You know why there is no NFL labor contract? Because of the rookie contracts. Every year, rookies at a variety of positions get a contract that is at or near the highest for their position. This didn’t start with Berry, and it won’t end with him, either. If Dan Snyder didn’t spend like a drunken sailor (imagine that) on Albert Haynesworth, a Suh or McCoy contract might have been at or near the top for DT’s. If Suh/Berry/McCoy gets drafted by the Lions, and one of the other 2 by Tampa Bay right after, the contracts will be similar. This is a non-issue. Nothing to see here.

I think the GD rookie cap should go into effect and be RETROACTIVE

to include this year’s draft class…..THEN let’s see who gets drafted where! LOL!

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

by KDawg on Mar 10, 2010 9:08 PM EST up reply actions

I still think Suh would go first...

But Berry would be a guaranteed top five pick. I can actually see him slide further than that right now. Not sayin’ he will, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

I will shit a gold oragami goose and mail it to you.....

I agree.....

Suh would go #1 if the rookie cap were retro for this draft class…..and Berry would be #2……hands down.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

by KDawg on Mar 10, 2010 9:14 PM EST up reply actions

I'll send you my address... :o)

I doubt it will happen, I’m just saying that I believe it’s possible. The reason I think that is I believe that we may be overvaluing Safety a little. It just seems that so many just don’t go as high as planned. Roy Williams was a great example. A guy that Dallas wanted… everyone talked about him as a top 3 pick, but he slid… because he was a safety. They traded back because they knew he would be there.

by DrewsLions on Mar 10, 2010 9:44 PM EST up reply actions

Your Right Drew...

You have to keep the prospective of the others teams in mind. Just because we need help in the secondary. Does not mean every team does. If a team is drafting in the top 5. That means they have alot of holes to fill. But not all of them will be a safety. KC needs some O-line help. TB needs some D-line help. Berry could go #2 to the Lions or 7 to the Browns. You just dont know…. until you know.

Backus has absolutely not

been a solid starter for his whole career. He’s been durable, that can’t be argued. He’s a hard worker, and he’s a good team representative. I give him a lot of credit for playing quite well this past season compared to what I was used to seeing in the past.

But statistically speaking, he is one of the worst LT’s in the league with such a significant amount of experience as a starter. Of course there are extenuating circumstances that affect all statistics at every position, but you can only argue with the numbers so much. He is credited with enough sacks allowed that he is among the worst long-term starting LT’s in the league.
(Having watched the majority of Lions games since he’s been on the team and personally seeing him exhibit what I consider to be sub-par play at the position, I guess I honestly just have a hard time understanding how you can even label him “solid”. For this past year? Sure… But through his “whole career”?… I just don’t understand it.)

The reason that I agree about moving Backus is that I do believe he’s better than any option we have at LG, and also that Okung would (at the very least) take his place and ideally provide an improvement over Backus’ play at the LT position.
We’d still utilize the good things about Backus being a Lion, and it would be significantly addressing two needs with one draft pick.

Even with these trades and FA pickups...

we will draft BPA. Which is in my humble opinion. Suh or Berry. We really cant go wrong with either.

by JCruize on Mar 9, 2010 12:31 PM EST reply actions

Agreed, Suh or Berry is the BPA.......but Schwartz wants the "BPA who FITS"

That’s Eric Berry.

It’s all about FIT. FIT breaks the tie. Schwartz isn’t drafting for a theoretical team….he’s drafting for THIS team.
From the mouth of the Schwartz himself:

We have to make good decisions for THIS team, let’s not try to judge ourselves against anybody else, other than OURSELVES. Make good decisions and put the pieces in place that FIT what WE want to do, that FIT OUR philosophy.

I'm going to have a FIT if I have to read the word FIT...

in another of your post. Tell me once again how Suh would not FIT? Let’s see… talent… check. Size… check. Strength… check. Pass-rushing ability… check. Quickness… check. Agility for a big man… check. Run-stopping power… check. Pure eff’ing awesomeness… check. Coolest name on the planet… check. How does that not FIT on any team in the league?

by DrewsLions on Mar 9, 2010 6:02 PM EST up reply actions

Take it up with Schwartz

Size……..no check…….that’s how.
MAYBE he fits this team. Unlikely Schwartz will use the 2nd overall pick on a MAYBE.

All of those are Schwartz quotes. He’s the one who keeps using the word in almost every interview. Take it up with Schwartz.

by GRLion on Mar 9, 2010 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

So what would he have to be to FIT?

Like 325 instead of 308 or whatever he currently weighs? You know that he could put that on quickly right? He’s got the frame to get bigger and the talent that no one else does.

BTW… I think you are taking Schwartz quotes a TAD too literal. I think he’s meaning more like, “we don’t want any 285 lbs tackles” versus guys pushing 310 or bigger. I think you are taking some definite liberties with these quotes to FIT your agenda.

by DrewsLions on Mar 9, 2010 6:36 PM EST up reply actions

How does that affect his performance?

320+ is good. 330 is good too. But there’s maybes involved in changing a player after the draft. Do you want to take that risk with the #2 overall pick, on top of the normal risks associated with drafting rookies? That’s what’s known as “unnecessary risk”.

by GRLion on Mar 9, 2010 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

Yes... I do.

He’s uber-talented. You DO realize you are arguing over 12 lbs on a guy who is 6’4", right? Players that size and gain or lose 12 lbs in like two weeks. That is a weak, weak argument. If he added 12 lbs and weighed 320 lbs, that would not affect his performance if that weight was a combination of muscle and filling out a frame.

by DrewsLions on Mar 9, 2010 7:00 PM EST up reply actions

I am not of the mind to support the size argument on Suh either.....

For that matter, I would not make that argument against Gerald McCoy. However, I think McCoy does not play UP to his size, nor does he have the strength he should have for a 300 pounder (297….whatever). Suh DOES….and there is no doubt about that.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

by KDawg on Mar 10, 2010 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

Haynesworth

Wasn’t quite the beast he is now when he was first drafted. He was only about 320 when he was drafted, yet has gotten up to 350. Suh will definitely be able to put on some weight if the Lions want him to.
