Browns release QB Derek Anderson

Anderson would be an excellent back up if the price was right. He has a big arm like stafford and because it is looking like we are putting together a vertical style passing game (not the west coast stuff that Holmgren wants and Anderson stinks in)....I would love it if we gave him a look.

I think he would be an excellent signing

He is still relatively young and would DEF be a better backup then a starter though i think he would be searching for being a starter and not going to find much of an offer after last couple of seasons

pass

one year wonder. The way he’s been playin I dont even want him as a backup. We need a guy that can help stafford improve anderson is not that guy.

Pass

He only had one good year and it wouldn’t do much to help our team in the long run. He isn’t the veteran presence Stafford needs. Schefter reported he’s almost likely to sign with Cardinals.

I'll definitely take him

I wanted him to start before we drafted Stafford. I think he can definitely excel in our scheme if Stafford gets hurt again, and would be a very solid and cheap #2

+1

He was crap last year because of the scheme. They lost all trade value for the guy by putting him in a position to fail last year.

by ATL Lion on Mar 9, 2010 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

meh

We have so many needs, I really don’t care who they sign for the backup QB. If there’s a chance he’s better than Stanton, go for it.

Hey that's a timeout, I can play right? yeah, get me--get the F-- Help me up...I can throw the ball if you need me to throw the ball...

Nahhhh....

I’d rather see Delhomme come here. Anderson was a one-year-wonder. If Brady Quinn can beat him out, so can Delhomme… and probably Stanton as well.

by DrewsLions on Mar 9, 2010 6:04 PM EST reply actions

no way

delhomme has been a TO machine for the past 2 years now….we don’t need another aging vet, we need some relatively fresh blood

Junk

Big arm, lousy feet, bad decision making. 1 good year and that’s because Edwards didn’t drop everything that came his way.

by jeremy j on Mar 9, 2010 6:22 PM EST reply actions

Wouldn't mind him as a backup I suppose

The guy is awful. He had about ten good games in one year.

I checked his stats for 2007. He actually had three fantastic games and two very good games. The rest were either mediocre or very bad. Stay Away.

I can remember people here last year wanting to trade with Cleveland to pick Anderson up. That’s how desperate people were to avoid picking a QB, specifically Staff.

Thank God we have a GM and Coach who are not afraid to make the smart call. That trade would have sunk the Lions for another three years.

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 9, 2010 7:35 PM EST reply actions

I think that's rather harsh

The Browns are about as terrible as we’ve ever been. Derek Anderson’s counterpart at running back was 30+ year old Jamal Lewis, with his best receiver being Braylon Edwards… not saying much. Add in a shitty offensive line and defense and yeah, the guy (a pocket passer with limited mobility) would probably have some issues.

Anderson would be a great addition for depth here, and could use the myriad weapons he lacked and still made an impact in for one season in Cleveland to great lengths. Delhomme isn’t coming here, and at the bottom line, I would MUCH rather have him than another season with Daunte fucking Culpepper.

by Nate D. on Mar 9, 2010 8:50 PM EST up reply actions

Edwards was a Pro Bowler that year. 80 rec for 1,289 yards and 16 TDs.

He also had Joe Jurevicious and Winslow Jr. at TE. Winslow was a Pro Bowler too. Lewis had 1,300 yards rushing. His line had Joe Thomas at LT [another pro Bowler] and only gave up 19 sacks all season. In 2008 they allowed 24 sacks and 30 in 2009.

Anderson is just not a good QB. If you take away the three amazing games he had in 2007, no one would even consider him. Those three games he averaged 275 yards with a 67.5% complete and a eleven to one TD/INT ratio.

Yes, I would like to see someone else as the back up. How about Charlie Batch?
If Stafford goes down our season is cooked anyways. Charlie could cover for at least a few games. I don’t like Anderson as a QB, even as a back up.

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 10, 2010 7:48 AM EST up reply actions

I second the motion...

to bring in Charlie Batch. He’s a guy that can come in and run the offense and not blow games for us, and he would make a good veteran mentor for Stafford, since he would know his role on the team, unlike Cpep.

Point taken

I stand corrected on that year. Although I still claim that Winslow is a bust, and Joe Jurevicious is hardly a high-level threat, I can agree with you that the team actually did have some decent talent. That actually improves upon my point, however.

If that’s what Anderson can accomplish with an OK squad, he should be able to duplicate it here, if necessary. I think the scheme is appropriate, he absolutely has the physical characteristics (similar to Stafford, albeit less mobile) and with the targets he has that are similar or better than what he had previously (Edwards/Johnson, Winslow/Pettigrew, Kevin Smith and possibly Co. at RB), if Stafford got banged up at some point in the season, I think Anderson could fill in admirably.

Moreso than a guy like Batch who’s been sitting on the bench for YEARS. I want Anderson or Delhomme, though Delhomme doesnt seem possible at all, moreso since visiting Cleveland for a starting position.

actually his numbers look like a back up to me.

46 TD’s to 45 int’s. A starting record of 13-14.
