With the 2nd pick in the draft the Detroit Lions select ... ?
Hi all ... I go by upamtn (up a mountain) over on Arrowhead Pride, home of Insane KC Chiefs fans. Like all of you here at Pride of Detroit, we love our team without really knowing just WHY we love them ... we just DO! That said, and in the spirit of bored insanity that generally strikes this time of year, we're doing a little 2-round mock draft, and I have the distinct honor of playing Matt Millen the Detroit Lion GM and making those top picks official.
With that in mind, and with the understanding that thee will be NO TRADES happening, what I'd like to do, with your help, is find a concensus as to WHO the fans of Detroit want for their picks, both #2 and #34, and more to the point ... WHY ... what positions ore of the greatest need, and what players will most benefit the team? The way I see it is this: #2 pick will be the easiest (I'm thinking Suh if available, but ... that's why I'm here, to get YOUR opinions and YOUR thoughts and comments.
More after the jump ...
So, with a poll below, and in your comments, who do you think would be the BEST players for the Lions in the 2010 NFL Draft, and why do think so? What are the biggest team needs? What players will have the biggest impact? Who will give the biggest bang for the proverbial buck? What long-range need does a particular player or position fill? Is Defense more important than Offense? Are RBs more important than WRs? HELP! The Lions run a 4-3, yes? Do they need DLine? (Suh? McCoy?) Or more OLine protection? (Okung?) Have FAs filled some of those gaps and the biggest need is LB? (McClain?) If Bradford is available, is he even a consideration? If Suh is gone, who would be your next option? These are the things to think about, and that's just for the FIRST round ... we'll get to the SECOND round soon enough
Meantime, I thank ALL of you in advance for your help, your comments, your thoughts ... thank you to Sean for allowing this bit of mockery ... and finally, tip of the helmet to ALL of you loyal Lions fans. We in Kansas City know of the suffering and anguish, and we feel your pain ... trust me, we do!

He will make all of the current signings that much better! I hope he fall to 2 and Bradford goes 1. Seriously a great DL will help all of the defense. An improved defense will take a lot of pressure of Stafford and the O.

well...
I think he’s special. He’s big, strong, and has a great head on his shoulders. I want him to clog up the middle, take away some lanes. Our D has been dreadful for most of my life. We finally have a coach who was successful with play-makers on D, so let’s give him a few. He had 85 tackles last year – the ENTIRE front four for Alabama had 90 or so. He’s the quiet superstar that Dey-twah loves (dumars, yzerman, barry, and so on)
very cool ... thank you lionsfan85!

All of are biggest sports heros were quite and respected aroud the country. Yzerman was the perfect example Barry as well. I never thought about it but Suh could be that guy. I think Staff will probably be biggest name on that team though.

If Suh's gone . . .
I hope they can trade down with Bradford- I would take Okung with pick 3 or 4 and hopefully pick up a 2nd or 3rd round pick for allowing someone to move up! As much as I would love to see Berry and Delmas together in the secondary, I think the next best move for the Lions is to improve the OLine.

I know a LOT of mocks have the Redskins taking Bradford, and seems like a lot of people here at Pride of Detroit want Suh as their choice … all well and good, but you never know what Shanahan will do, or Dan Snyder for that matter

hi, Mo!
5 minutes!!!
Its Suh
It’s really simple, if the Lions follow the same approach they did a year ago than they take the Best Player Available approach. I don’t think you can name a team in which Suh isn’t on top of their draft boards at this point of the offseason.
I have Berry graded right up their with Suh however if he is gone but it is in our best interest to trade down and add more talent especially with so many QB hungry teams slated in the top ten wanting to grab one of the two QBs and if STL goes that direction…calls are gonna start piling up on Schwartz and Co. to move up ahead of Redskins to grab the last elite QB.
Back to Suh, the reason behind this pick is you have to finish the job on that defensive line. Adding Vanden Bosch and Corey Williams is just one step in improving this defense. Corner may be the thinnest of our positions on that defense but I like the recent moves made and we shouldn’t have a problem landing another prospect in round 2 or via another trade by Mayhew. Adding Suh will make that defense that much more flexible and Gunther can then utilize his blitzes the way he wanted to a year ago but was limited due to lack of talent along that entire defense.
Plus, having a good linemen rotation will give that secondary the extra second they need to get in position and not have to cover for periods of 10 to 15 seconds like they were forced to do for most part of the year. I don’t care who your corners are, giving the QB all day to throw isn’t the way to go and that is the argument against taking Berry even thought he would be our 2nd option.
Hope this helps.

in terms of LB’s we are very happy with Simms on one side Peterson on the other and our rookie from last year Levy should be in the middle to start this year, when he did get the chance’s last year i personally thought he over achieved from what any of us expected, and now with Foote(I wish he would of resigned) out of the way it’s his job to loose. I wouldn’t be surprised to see us try and bring in Bullocks from Tennessee now that he is a FA(I beleave) just because Schwartz has been bringing in quality players that have played for our 3 coaches past teams. I do think if somehow Bullocks is brought in he will get the starting job, but as of now I have not herd of any talks with him. Like most of us here we REALLY want one of 2 guys KONG or Berry; me personally I want Berry but would be just as giddy if we get KONG.
How many lumps you want Doc?
thanks davis, I appreciate the insight
I think the Lions have made some good FA signings for the DLine … as I noted below, it seems the REAL issue now is …
BPA vs Best Fit
Suh is pretty much agreed upon as BPA by “acclaim” but is he the “Best Fit” with the other FAs for the DLine already done? Berry a definite upgrade for Secondary, but is he BPA? and is that Safety position more important than, say, Albert on the OLine?
"I shall conquer untruth by truth" - Mahatma Gandhi
Whitlock Rocks!
hi, Mo!
5 minutes!!!
Exactly
It’s a matter of what our front office really wants, the nest version of the Williams wall or the next best set of safeties to put fear into WR’s coming over the middle. Again REALLY want Berry but KONG would make me just as happy and I think that’s the same for 95% of us here. Yes there are a couple of guys that want Okung but most of us are not even sure he’s the best tackle in the draft this year. Our biggest problem on our O-line is at guard not tackle and I can’t see us taking Okung over either Kong or Berry, but this is the Lions we are talking about so anything can happen, even if this FO has been different than any other one that we can remember. Just because they are actually bringing in quality players not just throwing money around to say that they spent money.
How many lumps you want Doc?
sounds like what's happening with the Chiefs ... eerily similar
many of us would love to trade DOWN but that’s not likely to happen … we know for a fact Suh will be gone (if not, I’m calling the Devil to my next ski trip) … so who do we want instead?
not McCoy, he’s gone too … Berry? maybe … we need Defense … none of the NTs look THAT good (Dan Williams maybe, but he’s a reach) … we have a good LT already …
decisions, decisions

I can't see you guys passing on Berry if he's there at the 4 spot.
I’m very curious how is your guys Front line on Offence? Would Okung be your #4 pick if Bradford/Suh/McCoy are all gone????
How many lumps you want Doc?
right niw I'm guessing Berry, Dan Williams maybe, trade down if they can (which is doubtful)
Berry would not be a bad option, definite upgrade for a less than stellar Secondary … NT is huge need for us in the 3-4 that we run, so they might actually go with Williams, but he would be a reach …
Okung would be awesome, but we have a very good LT in Brandon Albert (then too, Albert played LG in college and Okung would be an upgrade, so who knows what will happen)
if I had to guess right now I’d say Berry … but that’s only a guess
btw, we pick #5

by Kirt-LionFaninGR! on Mar 9, 2010 10:29 PM EST up reply actions
It's really not that simple
Yes, the Lions used a BPA approach to their draft last year. But as fans, we never got to see their draft board. With your logic they would’ve selected Aaron Curry 1st overall because every draft site had him ranked as the top prospect.
When selecting at the top of the draft, THE BPA APPROACH DOES NOT EXIST. That is, unless the BPA is QB, LT or pass-rushing DE. Every draft also features a “once in a lifetime” RB, WR, etc that can sneak into the top-5, as well. In this draft class it happens to be a “once in a lifetime” DT and a “once in a lifetime” Safety. No team, including the Lions, want to lock up $12 mil/year with $40 mil guaranteed on a DT or Safety, so Left Tackle (if Okung is the real deal) is the logical selection.
The only reason it would make sence
is because we took Staff last year, Offence fills seats Defence wins chanpionships.
How many lumps you want Doc?
So you're saying it makes sense?
And no offense, but if Defense won championships then how did the Saints manage to win the Super Bowl with the 25th ranked defense in the NFL? Don’t believe me? Check the link:
http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/total/position/defense
I’d love to have a great defense, but in todays NFL its more beneficial to have a great offense.
by BriansLions on Mar 10, 2010 12:32 PM EST up reply actions
They won it with
Great Safety play out of SHARPER. He is a prime example of why you want Berry, Remember when the Lions actually had a defence back in the 90’s? Wayno’s bend but don’t break Defence. You can give up all the freakin yards you want just don’t let them into the endzone. You should not have put N.O. as you example and if Offence is SO much more important how come the Colts didn’t win it? Oh Because they were playing with a hurt De and their best secondery man (a SAFETY) wasn’t able to play. Don’t get me wrong Brian I would be elated if we take Kong/Berry I’d be happy with Okung/McCoy. Cases can be made for all 4 of these guys why we should draft them over the other 3, each one has something to offer that our team can’t over look. Again Okung would help protect Stafford, but there are other LT’s that are close to Okung who is getting all the Hype at his position. Suh and McCoy also in the same boat, There is at least 3 other DT’s that will come in and be very good in this draft class. Berry and Mays are better than about 2-3 other safeties coming out this year so reguardless of who we draft we could have passed them by to get someone comperable to them in the 2nd round.
How many lumps you want Doc?
Something else about the bend but don't break D
especially when I talk about the lions. We had Bennie Blades and William White on that team, and ofcourse we drafted BB in the 3 spot in the first round. 1 more point about great Offences winning it for you, What did that great offence get the Patriots a couple of years ago? A undefeated regular season and nothing when they got to the big game. And what about SD last year? They had an awesome offence but their D wasn’t up to par. We have enough talent on the O side of the ball to compete but our D could not ever stop anyone and I mean ANYONE christ we made the Freaking RAMS look like they were the Greatest show on Turf again lasts year, in our home, that kind of shit can’t happen. Hell even Cutler looked good against us and he absolutely sucked last year.
How many lumps you want Doc?
i agree
saints were 25 in all the stats but top 5 in takeways. just look at the NFC championship game they gave up around 500 yds but had like 5 takeways. i dont know about you but that sounds like a win to me (wait a min. they did win that game.lol) you can not win games, get above .500 or make the playoffs if your D can not stop anyone pure and simple. name a team in the past 10 yrs that did not have a good defense and won the superbowl.. now how many can you in the same time frame that had an ok to offense..
1 ravens
2 bucs
3 giants
4 steelers x2
the D won those games not the O

Depends...
I like our current LB core with Julian Peterson and Sims on the outsides with DeAndre Levy manning the middle taking over Larry Foote.
However, I hate that big contract of Peterson’s and wouldn’t be surprised if the Lions trade him away for a middle round pick or might end up releasing him depending on the type of money they pay their top pick.
But as of now, I think it’s the strongest position on our thin defense even though it lacks depth. It’s the least of my worries at this point as behind that secondary, the next concerns has to be on offense especially on the Offensive Line and maybe another running back or receiver but other then that, it’s not too bad of a lineup.

hi, Mo!
5 minutes!!!
Welcome to the POD! I have visited your site a number of times and have enjoyed the banter.
At #2 Suh is my first choice. He would give us some great depth on the interior of our D Line and turn what was one of our weaker units into a strength. This would really help our weak secondary as well.
Okung would be my second choice, barely nosing out McCoy. I would only take Okung if Backus could be successfully shifted to Left Guard. If not, go with McCoy.
At #34 I would hope that Devin McCourty, the third best CB, is still available. If he is gone, Jahvid Best RB to work in tandem with Kevin Smith…….or replace him if he does not fully recover from his knee injury. I like Nate Allen S if those are gone or even Rodger Saffold T/G.
Thanks for asking!

you guys don’t think a trade down AND getting another draft pick is a good idea? (that’s one of the things we at AP go round and round on … the possibility of trading down from #5)
my personaly feeling is that it’s hard to do, but in general would be a huge payoff in the long run … end up with, say … #15 or #20 in the first round, plus either a 2nd or a 3rd rounder … adds depth for rebuilding teams

I dont want to trade down in the first...
The second or third would be fine with me. I just like the idea of drafting a " Stud ". Not to say we can draft one in the rounds. Because we can. Like in ’89 when we drafted Sanders. He was consider the best RB in the draft. But there were others that could be just as good. The Lions could have trade down. And drafted Eric Metcalf. Metcalf had a very good career. But he was no Barry. I just dont want the Lions to miss out on something special.

The dicussion with trading down is fine but...
The implication is frequently that it is no big deal to trade down and that we should be able to get 2 first rounders out of the deal. I also agree with JCruize that it makes no sense to trade for the sake of trading which seems to be the consensus among some here.

Flip a coin- Suh or Berry
I voted Suh, but if he’s gone then Eric Berry. They’re both once-in-a-decade prospects, I’d be happy if the Lions got either one of them.
As for #34, if any of these players are available-
Kyle Wilson/Devin McCourty
Ryan Matthews/Jahvid Best
Mike Iupati
Brandon Graham
Sean Weatherspoon
thank you for the comments ... much appreciated!
if you believe all that’s written about them, yeah … either one could be a game changer … I just always think you have to look at it as a crap shoot: sometimes the prospects kickass, sometimes they look horrible … and you never really know until you go thru it
hindsight, of course, is always 20/20 … and always useless in the end
I am surprised you have my personal favorite (Sean Weatherspoon) down as low as 2nd round … he may fall that far, but I have a feeling Spoon is gone in 1st

He might actually go as high as the top 15. If he’s there at #34 we just might pick him up.
Berry
I don’t think that he is a once-in-a-decade prospect. Seems like the past couple years the safety position has gotten more and more playmakers. People were saying the same thing about Taylor Mays. However if Suh isn’t there Berry probably should be the pick. My only concern spending 2nd pick money on a safety.

hi, Mo!
5 minutes!!!
See this is why I would rather take Berry
I feel that there is going to be 4 DT’s that are going to play at a high level for years to come, Suh is the cream of the crop, I don’t think anyone will argue that. But McCoy Fat albert from Alabama and Tennessee’s Dt’s are also going to be very good I could see us Taking Berry at the 2 spot and hoping like hell that the UN-movable obect from Alabama would be a hole plugger for us much like we had in the 90’s in Jerry Ball. Now as for Safety position I can see 2 guys a little ahead of about 3 others and Berry I see as a touch better than Mays/Hayes(USC’s) safety. There were games that I saw him get pushed back at the point of contact by RB’s last year and that’s not going to get any easier in the NFL. In terms of weekest positions on our team CB is the worst for us,and it isn’t even close here, but there is NO way we are going to take a CB over Kong/Berry/McCoy or our FO’s best rated LT, reguardless if it’s Okung or someone else.
How many lumps you want Doc?
I hear that ... #2 is high for even a potential game changer like Berry ...
… though I agree he’s likely be Best Fit if not BPA if Suh is gone …
he might even be Best Fit if Suh is there for you guys, but it wouldn’t happen, no way do they pass on Suh to take Berry
Lions are in the same boat as the Chiefs … Suh doesn’t really project as NT so he’s far from our “best fit” 9but he won’t fall to us anyway) … Berry is our likely, and we do need help at Safety, but man … our #5 is high for Secondary … the best NT, our biggest NEED, is a reach at #5 … the best LT (Okung) is awesome by all accounts, but not a HUGE need for us …
and neither Lions nor Chiefs will be able to trade down, though it might be the best and smartest thing to do for both teams

In the modern day draft system, only 3 teams have drafted a safety in the top 5 picks, unfortunately the lions are one of those teams so it’s not impossible but highly improbable. The Safety we took was Bennie Blades back in 91(I think it was) at the #3 spot. Ironic?

In my opinion ofcourse; he’s worthy of a top 5 pick.I mean look at what 34 year old D. Sharper has done in 1 year for the Saints D. What did the Steelers D look like after Troy went down, or the Ravens D look like those couple of games that Ed Reed wasn’t in there. The value of a great Safety is worth more than alot of people want to give especially when the smart money is on the Beasts in the trenches.
How many lumps you want Doc?
imo here is how it will go down no trades allowed top 5
1 bradford
2 suh
3 berry
4 clausen (synder is a dumb arse)
5 okrung… kc should stay away from mccoy he kinda reminds me of dorsey but could be wrong (i wouldnt mad if we HAD to get’em) but it seems like the KC FO is worried about protecting cassel 1st and everything 2nd

Hey Lionsfan
The Buck’s do not need a safety at all they are actually very good against the past they need big guys on that D-line. If we take Suh they are 90% sure too take McCoy. Just saying; look at the stats from last year. Great against the pass; horrible against the run.You are right about Snyder thou! Him and Shannahan are probably going to take 1 of 2 QB’s but they could surprise us all and take Berry, Shanny has always had snot knockers at the safety position and Berry could be that man for them.
How many lumps you want Doc?
davis, you really think Shanahan would take Berry ... a Safety as 1st overall pick?
a surprise? that would be shock of all shockers … he may be good, but come on
there WAS talk of Bucs taking either Berry or McCoy … most likely McCoy from what I’ve heard, but who knows …
one thing for sure: I do NOT like Shanahan

5 minutes!!!
No i think that the skins take the other QB that is there
But with Snyder you just can’t tell what they are going to do, he’s a young version of Al Davis to me.
How many lumps you want Doc?
lionsfan ... yah, doubt we take McCoy even if he is there
as for Okung .. he seems to be a beast at LT, but a lot of people thing the guy we have now is good as gold at LT and Okung would be “overkill” … we could put Okung at LT and move Albert to LG (where he played in college) and be set on that side for a decade … I’d be ok with it, but a lot AP prefers Defense on our first round pick
given that we were 31st in the league overall, our Defense needs all the help it can get … with Suh gone and McCoy not being a good fit, that kinda leaves Berry as BPA and Best Fit for us

Seriously
How many times are we gonna post the same topic? Can nobody think about anything else to talk about besides who the second pick will be? How about our second round pick? Third round?
motown ... this time you can blame me ... I'm just trying to get some thoughts from you guys for the Arrowhead Pride Mock ...
… and in a few days the question I’ll be asking will indeed be: who do you want for the SECOND round pick? really looking forward to that one … seems Suh is the top choice here for Round One …
Berry and Okung fighting it out for “second option” if Suh goes to the Redskins in the mock …

my bad
I gotta admit I didn’t even read the post, I just saw the topic title. Sorry ’bout that. Kinda feel like a jackass.
My pick would be Suh, second option would be Okung.
BTW grats on the Jones signing, between him and Charles you guys are gonna have a nasty ground attack.
motown ... thank you for the comments, they help so much more than just the polls
… especially that second just in case option … was just reading your comments (and others) on a post from yesterday (?) and the whole issue really seems to be …
BPA vs Best Fit
Suh is likely BPA, but with the recent DLine signings, is he a NEED? with the Lions, and Chiefs for that matter, almost ANYONE you get that high is a good pick … but … after grabbing not one but TWO DLinemen, would it be better to take almost-too-obvious Berry?
personally, I love me some Albert and I don’t think one can ever have too much protection for the QN … Albert seems to be awesome … who knows what will REALLY happen

Hmmmmm
I’m very surprised that Kdawg and Grlion have not spoke up to you as of yet. They are both very big Berry fans as well. But again I think they would be just as happy with Suh (KING/Donkey) KONG
How many lumps you want Doc?
I'm pretty convinced that the vast majority on Pride of Detroit want Suh, and that's who I'll go with ...
… assuming he’s there, of course
now the only question in my mind for FIRST round is: if he’s gone, who do I go with?
I think I’ll do a post tomorrow on that … narrowed it down really to Berry or Okung, if Suh is gone
"I shall conquer untruth by truth" - Mahatma Gandhi

hi, Mo!
5 minutes!!!
If that happens we will just wait to pick until like 5th.
(Note: the title of this post is a joke no one in their right mind should think that the Lions would really do this.)
actually Davis,
I think Kdawg would want Suh first. If he is gone, Berry would be his choice over McCoy. I can also tell you even though he likes Berry, he would have a hard time swallowing the money on a saftey at 2 overall. He has commented on this several times and if my memory serves me, these were his thoughts.
Sorry Dawg for speaking for you and I hope I am recalling correctly. No harm intended.
As for myself upamtn, Suh is my first choice. If he is gone, Berry. I have to admit, like Kdawg, it would be hard to pay a saftey #2 money. Okung is intriguing, but as it is well known, Backus will be here next year and there are no plans that I know of to move him to LG. So I guess it is the lesser of 2 evils. Pay a great saftey #2 money that plays and makes an impact now, or pay a LT that may have to what and take his position later.
Good luck with your draft and the upcoming season for KC.
Once again, Sorry Kdawg if I was inaccurate with your stance.
Lead Hunter - thanks for the comments, much appreciated
lots of money for whoever they get, I know … the slot picks are like hitting powerball

aw hunter
I think most of us would/will have a hard time taking a safety at the 2 spot especially with those 2 DT’s and a better than average LT sitting there. I really don’t want us to take Okung but I could understand if we did, Backus at best is only going to be around another couple of years and it would make the most sence to take him if his pro-day pans out, Remember I was bitching last year that we didn’t take a LT with the #1. As much as I want Berry and Suh, more games are won by the guys up front than in the back fields, unless Barry is coming out again.
How many lumps you want Doc?
Dez Bryant
…..Can’t believe that nobody suggested him.
momentumchange ... looks like you just DID mention Dez Bryant
not sure why … decent WR but … for the Lions?
and after the stories about him missing or being late to meetings, etc … on top of the rules thing tht got him suspended … not at all hard for ME to believe that he hasn’t been talked about here … and WR is not exactly a high priority need for Lions right now with the Burleson addition

yeah at #2?
Matt MILLEN get the Fuck off of our site!!!!!!! You had your chance now go talk outta your ass on TV where you should have never left, then you would still hold a once of respect in the Football world.!
How many lumps you want Doc?
LOL.....
WR is kind of a sore spot around here……history is hard to outlive i guess. I seriously think that WR is not a big enough need to even ponder taking one inside the first 3 rounds. If Suh is available i think you HAVE to take him. Our D line is just as inept as our O line. Even with the new additions its not going to strike fear in many offenses. The drafting of Suh will do just that. We will have to be taken seriously. And there just is not a stud O line prospect to be had this year. So we would really be no better off than we are with Backus. I would like to see the Lions address their secondary deficiency with pick #34. Hard to say who would still be there. But whomever the best available DB is needs to be taken there. I think if we can address our O line in free agency by signing a guard it would make Backus a lot better tackle than we have seen him be over the years. It has been musical chairs at the guard spot for a long time now. The only mainstays on the line have been Backus and Raiola. Continuity on the line would be a great thing and I believe that we would see Backus and Raiola be a lot better than we have seen them be before. If we can get a project O line guy in a later round to start learning the LT spot, that would be nice. But what we really need is a guard.
riki, great comments and THANK YOU!
I do think the overwhelming choice is Suh … only question now is what if he’s gone, who then? looks like it comes down to Okung or Berry …
I’ll post on that shortly … next week (most likely) a post and poll on that 2nd round

5 minutes!!!
And as far as money goes....
The Lions will have taken an awful lot of top 5 picks over the last few years. So its going to hurt no matter who gets the huge signing bonus.
LOL
Yeah I don’t see them drafting him unless if they have a trade in place.

The more you are here
The more i like you Calvin, stay around for the long run. You and me are a lot a like, I feel for you!
How many lumps you want Doc?
Suh is my pick
The way I see, I think the overall value, talent and potential is the strongest with him at #2. Berry provides great potential and talent, but the value isn’t as strong. Okung presents great value but the talent and potential may not be as strong and McCoy has potential and value, but might not be as talented as Suh.
At #34, well, that all depends on who is available and who we picked before. I say go with your own personal rankings of players and pick who you think is the Best avaliable at either G, OT, RB, WR, DT, DE, CB, S.
The Bringers of Hope: Stafford - Delmas - C. Johnson - Pettigrew - Levy - Hill - Schwartz
