A Very Interesting Perspective

With the talk of whether the Lions should draft Suh or not, I started to think of different ways they could rotate their DTs. The most interesting way came to my mind when I thought about Albert Haynesworth down in Tennessee when Schwartz was the defensive coordinator. Schwartz would put Haynesworth in situations to take the double-team away. The Lions, could do the same thing with Suh, and put him opposite Vanden Bosch as the starter. On passing downs, move him inside to the 3-technique, move Corey Williams to the nose, and bring in Avril/Hunter to replace Suh. Hill would be on the sidelines, allowing him to be prepared for the next few plays. This would give us fresh legs, a great pass rush, and a great run defense. A lot of people may think 307 pounds is too big for a DE, but Suh ran faster than a lot of the DEs at the Combine. I think with his talent, it would be awesome. No OT would be able to run block him, and then most OGs couldn't even pass block him. Our D-line would look like this:

Suh-Williams-Hill-Vanden Bosch

Looks solid to me. Now tell me what you think!

creative way for sure

Schwartz is the kind of guy that has used his D line to its full potential over the years. I wouldn’t put it past him.

Nice

I live in Tennessee and I remember Big Albert was used in some very creative ways. It was rare to see him on every down as Schwartz would continue to use fresh legs every other down but especially when facing the Colts. Schwartz gave Peyton some pretty scary looks and sometimes it paid off, other times it didn’t but its always good to confuse the opposition.

Explain to me again why we should lock up $12 mil/year and $40 mil guaranteed on a Defensive Tackle that won’t play every snap?

We WOULD use Suh on every down though.....

Hill would most likely be the odd man out in the rotation and only be in on 1st and 2nd and 3rd and short.

no defensive lineman

truly play every snap. its much more exhausting to shed defenders and chase ball carriers and QB’s than it is to kick step and block defenders. The best D lineman in the game play 75% of the defensive snaps.

It depends on whether the defense can get off the field or not

With the defense we have building, a D lineman could play every snap. We have a very solid defense, looking like a lot of opposing offenses will have quite a few 3 and outs.

Brian

Like the rest have said, a defensive linemen rarely plays on all downs especially if you have the legs of an Albert Haynesworth. While watching him in Tennessee, I didn’t see one game go by where he didn’t receive medical attention. Most the time it was to catch his breathe as he was gased out and very few times it was an actually injury. Suh will give you those fresh legs as a rookie but as his career wears along, you’ll start to see that with every Defensive Tackle.

I don't mean to have him at DE and then DT his whole career

When he can’t play every snap anymore, move him to DT. For now though, he can be highly effective playing both DE and DT. Also, Haynesworth is 350, Suh is 307. There’s a big difference.

Umm...

I don’t know. I can picture Suh as an end in a 3-4, but this seems a bit gimmicky. I guess I just really don’t understand why some Lions fans want Hill to be a starter, he’s still likely a couple years from being a solid starting DT, and he gives us depth at the position in case of injury (which, knowing our luck, will probably happen).

No

I was just saying if we did run the 3-4 he would be a good DE.

by motown313 on Mar 9, 2010 11:50 PM EST up reply actions

Really Motown

You think he is only a run stuffer? Did you look at his stats at Nebraska? I’m just curious here brother, because he had more sacks and pressures than ALOT of DE’s that are going to come out this year and he WAS the Nebraska D-line the last 2 years, so teams game planned for him and he was still picking off passes and getting sacks and pressures every game. I know you had to have seen that prime time game against Texas he was absolutely the best player on the field against one of the better front lines in the country. I could very easily see him at 1 end and be a freaking monster for us but I’d rather see him at the DT spot and actually see what Avril can do at the end position just so we know if we need one in next years draft or if we have the second coming of Freeny who some want to compare him to.

I never said

he’s just a run stuffer, I just can’t imagine him being an edge rusher. His natural position is obviously DT.

Oh Ok

i misunderstood what you said, Not the first time I’ve done that now is it????

He can be an edge rusher

He is just as quick as anybody in this draft off the line and he would be a run stopping DE and pass rushing DT. Do you not know what I mean?

by lionsman81 on Mar 10, 2010 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

There is no way....

….we are not taking Suh at number 2 if hes there…..He is the type of player Schwartz wants on Defense and they wont have to bid for him with other teams!!!…..I cant wait to see that line!!!!

by BennieBladesFan on Mar 9, 2010 8:45 PM EST reply actions

big question, only question really ...

if Suh is gone with the first pick, who do the Lions take?

Should be Berry brother

But it could very easily be one of 3 players if Suh is gone, Berry/McCoy/(I still think it could be a different LT) Okung.

McCoy won't be the pick

Not after his sub-par Combine where he put up less reps than some of the DBs.

by lionsman81 on Mar 10, 2010 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

Warren Sapp only had...

like 16 reps.

Besides, he’s lifting again during bradford’s pro day.

by CLF on Mar 10, 2010 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think Sapp only did 16 reps.....

I can’t find that anywhere, but what I do find is that he ran a 4.69 and he had a 525 bench max at one point in his career. I think even if he did only do 16 reps, a 4.69 trumps that.

by lionsman81 on Mar 11, 2010 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

McCoy has done 40 reps at Okl

He did his lifting 12 mins after running the 40 ..3 times.. Suh has 2 hrs in between lifting and his 40

by ralphgoblue on Mar 10, 2010 5:33 PM EST up reply actions

That has nothing to do with it

Other guys have not had that excuse. If McCoy is really that good, he would have the endurance to do it. And where have you heard he did 40 reps anyhow? I have not heard this on any site, or on tv.

if it happen

the NFC north better get ready for the Lions…. the ywill underestimate us … to where we will win

GO LIONS in 2010! the transformation starts now.. they have much to do.

by DINORDO on Mar 10, 2010 1:30 AM EST reply actions

I gotta agree with you

I think that if we can have a solid draft, we’ll compete for the top spot in the NFC North. I think Chicago will realize they were stupid for signing those guys to big contracts, Minnesota will possibly lose Brett Favre and Pat Williams to retirement and could even lose Kevin Williams to the performance-enhancing drugs violation. The Packers will be the only team that we will have trouble against, and that is only if they can solidify their awful offensive line. I’m very hopeful of this upcoming season. I think this could be our year.
