2010 NFL Draft Prospect Visit Tracker

Each NFL team can host 30 prospects for visits prior to the draft to get to know them better.  This is really the final part of the evaluation process, and it just wrapped up on Wednesday.  Teams can now start to finalize their draft boards, taking into account anything new they learned from these visits.

For the Lions, this year there seemed to be a lot more publicity about who they decided to bring in for visits.  The team's official site actually published stories about certain players that visited (mostly potential first-round picks), and other visits were reported by sources like National Football Post and some of the local papers.  This allowed all of us to get an idea of which players the Lions may be targeting, or at least were targeting prior to the visits.

In order to keep track of who has visited the Lions in the last month or so, I have assembled a tracker that is based strictly on the visits that have been reported.  There are not 30 players listed below, so just go ahead and assume that there were visits that went unreported. It's definitely possible that the Lions didn't use all 30 of their visits, but I would imagine that they used more than 17, which is the number of players I have listed in the tracker.

Star-divide

Anyways, here is a look at which players have been reported as being hosted for a prospect visit by the Lions (dates are approximations, because sometimes an exact date wasn't reported and because a player may arrive on one day and not have his official visit until the next day):

RB Deji Karim (Southern Illinois) - N/A (It's not certain if Karim visited the Lions or just privately worked out for them)
FB John Connor (Kentucky) - March 29
TE Ed Dickson (Oregon) - March 18
TE Jimmy Graham (Miami, FL) - N/A (It was held at some point during the week of March 29)
TE Aaron Hernandez (Florida) - April 14
OT Russell Okung (Oklahoma State) - March 15
OT Trent Williams (Oklahoma) - April 6
OT Charles Brown (USC) - N/A (It was held at some point during the week of April 5)
OG Mike Iupati - N/A (He also privately worked out for the Lions)
DE Jason Pierre-Paul (South Florida) - N/A (It was held at some point after April 8)
DT Gerald McCoy (Oklahoma) - March 18
DT Ndamukong Suh (Nebraska) - March 19
DT Hall Davis (Louisiana-Lafayette) - April 13
CB Perrish Cox (Oklahoma State) - N/A (It was held at some point in April)
CB Patrick Robinson (Florida State) - N/A (It was held at some point during the week of April 5)
CB Robert McClain (Connecticut) - April 13
S Kam Chancellor (Virginia Tech) - N/A (It was held at some point during the week of April 5)

In addition to the players listed above, the Lions have reportedly privately worked out quarterbacks Jonathan Crompton (Tennessee) and Bill Stull (Pittsburgh), offensive tackle Zane Beadles (Utah), and linebacker Danny Batten (South Dakota State).  Just as with the visits, it's probable that other private workouts were held and we just didn't hear about them.

If I have missed any visits or workouts that have been reported, let me know in the comments (please try to provide a link so I don't have to search for a source) and I will update the tracker.

Well...

…I’d say it’s safe to say what they’re targeting. ;-)

Yeah

Really becomes obvious when you break down the positions.

For sure...

I have a question, though: Is it possible that they didn’t ask some guys to visit Allen Park because they already had a good enough look at them at the Senior Bowl? I’m too busy to check it out now, but how many of those guys listed above are underclassmen? And how many of those guys listed above attended the Senior Bowl?

by BriansLions on Apr 15, 2010 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

And...

Seeing Trent Williams, Charles Brown and Jason Pierre-Paul on the list makes me think that Mayhew thinks he may have a solid chance at trading out of the 2nd overall selection…

by BriansLions on Apr 15, 2010 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I have to believe that Brown was looked at as a potential second round pick......

or a trade up from # 34. Brown is generally being projected as a very late first round pick.

Also, I looked at the North Senior Bowl team and read through the comments of the practices at Walterfootball.com [LINK:http://walterfootball.com/seniorbowl2010.php to remember how some players did. At least in Matt McGuire’s opinion.
Some to remember; CBs K. Wilson and D. McCourty and Brandon Ghee. DEs Alex Carrington and Austen Lane and Brandon Graham. LBs D. Butler and AJ Edds and Daryl Washington.
The RBs on the North were L. Blount, J. Bell, Lonyae Miller, and Stefon Johnson. Interestingly, Ed Dickson was on the team and came in for a visit. The only one who was so honoured.

Thanks!

Thanks for doin’ the research on this, NL! Slightly clears up a somewhat muddy picture. That is interesting about Ed Dickson, and it looks very possible we’ll have a new TE in town after the draft…

Hey Sean...

I’m lovin’ this Visit Tracker, but could you break it down into 2 lists: 1 for the prospects who’ve visited (just like you currently have), and then another for the prospects who’ve worked out for the Lions (instead of a paragraph). If there won’t be alot of other additions this may not be worth your time, however. Keep up the great work!

A little surprised to see three TE's

But I guess there’s no guarantee ’grew will be back and with fitzsimmons retiring I guess we may need one.

Gator TE

With Fitz on the fritz, I can see them targeting a TE in this draft, I do like Aaron Hernandez from Florida. Not an in-line blocker like Pettigrew but he has the ability to strech the field vertically. I would rather have defence for 1st, and 2nd, and oline 3rd, then TE and special team players. Keep an eye out for blair white in the later rounds. Also the WR Ford from clemson who is a real burner.

by derbyz81 on Apr 15, 2010 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Petti-who...TE

Suh, then o-line. Unless you think this draft is deep with OTs. Probably safer to get one early in the second. With F.Adams available sign him and move him to RT. He has gone deaf in the right ear but hears great with his left.

McCourty will do. If the Packers don't take him first... they would.

I know you're kidding...

…but I personally thoughtit strange that the one player consistently being mentioned as “the most can’t miss player in the draft” (some believe even more so than Suh), wasn’t mentioned as having privately worked out or visiting.

These pre-draft shennanigans are fantastic…I can’t wait for next Thursday!!!

What's everyone's take?

Our need a RB has been widely talked about, however it looks as if there’s only been 1 visit from a RB so far. The rest are O-lineman and defense. Does everyone still think we could take a running back as early as round 2, or does the visitor tracker change those views? I personally don’t see us taking a RB until the later rounds. I think this team has bigger needs.

by giggy09 on Apr 15, 2010 1:37 PM EDT reply actions

Here's my take...

Just looking at this list, I realized quickly (especially due to the lack of RB’s on the list) that the Lions coaching staff already had an outstanding look at a ton of prospects at the Senior Bowl. Therefore, there wouldn’t be a need to “tip your hat” and invite certain guys that they’re targeting to Allen Park. This list might not mean as much as I initially thought if we look at it that way. It definitely does give you an indication of what POSITIONS the Lions may be targeting, however…

lions can draft players that dont visit its all who falls to them

also they may not want other teams to know who there looking at sean said not everyone is known who visited

Some of those prospects are intruiging

and at the same time disheartening. Hall Davis, a Defensive End, was viewed as a disappointment at Louisiana-Lafayette and was brought to the combine mostly based on his athleticism. Sounds like a waste of a visit to me. Deji Karim on the other hand, was a finalist for the Walter Peyton award, the nations top rusher, and an extremely versatile threat that has thus far flown under the radar.

Thank you.

In addition....

Brad Bustle, OG, Louisiana-Lafayette, worked out privately for Lions scouts while they were there watching Hall Davis. Bustle was on the preseason Lombardi Award watch list, and did not allow Ndamakong Suh or Crick a sack when the Rajun Cajuns played Nebraska

Thank you.

Does anyone know

how many of the guys we took last year ended up coming in for a visit or private work out?

by Stones1981 on Apr 15, 2010 2:47 PM EDT reply actions

well

the first four players we took in the draft ended up visiting the Lions. I’m not sure about the late picks

Thanks latif

It’ll be interesting to see how many of these guys we take with our top 4 picks this year.

Deji Karim would be nice...

sure wouldn’t mind if he fell to us in the seventh.

I just read up on this kid...

Sounds like he’s got a ton of upside if he can be picked up in the later rounds. Apparently he compares to DeAngelo Williams, and if he would have attended the Combine his numbers would’ve been at the top of all RBs.

You can definitely see what positions we are targeting

Surprised by the lack of RB visits, especially since we’ve talked quite a lot about picking one. However, visits don’t necessarily mean they’ll be our draft pick. We’ll just have to see.

If the Lions stick to the "don't draft them unless you talk to them" strategy we will get:
  1. 2 – N. Suh DT
  2. 34 – Charles Brown LT or Patrick Robinson CB
  3. 66 – Perrish Cox CB or Jimmy Graham TE
  4. 100 – Ed Dickson TE
    7th – Kam Chancellor S/OLB
    7th – Deji Karim RB
    7th – Robert McClain CB

Or Not.

by NorthLeft12 on Apr 16, 2010 12:00 PM EDT reply actions

I'm really thinking...

…that a Tight End is a very real possibility in the 4th round, especially Ed Dickson. It’s interesting that Jimmy Graham only played one year at “The U”, but he was a 4-year starter on their basketball team and he has a TON of upside. Aaron Hernandez was great at Florida, but he’s more of a wide receiver in a TE’s body, and was never asked to block at Florida. He’s a hell of an athlete as well, however. All 3 of these TE’s that they had in for a visit have 3rd or 4th round grades on them.

by BriansLions on Apr 16, 2010 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

That draft actually looks possible...

But they won’t take Charles Brown at 34 because they’re taking Okung at 2. :)
