Martin Mayhew Talks No. 2 Pick, Trades, Running Backs, More

Some notes from today's pre-draft press conference with Martin Mayhew.

  • According to Martin Mayhew, the Lions have not made a decision on which player they will take with the No. 2 overall pick.  Mayhew did acknowledge how much talent there is at the top of the draft and how little separation there is between prospects, but that was about all he shared on that topic.
  • Although the Lions have chatted with some teams about trading the No. 2 overall pick, Mayhew sounded pretty sure no trade will actually happen.
  • On the flip side, whether it is via a trade or via the draft, Mayhew made it clear that the Lions are in the market for a running back.
  • Tom Kowalski said that Mayhew wasn't nearly as upfront about the need to add a cornerback, which I found interesting.
  • Mayhew and Jim Schwartz will be watching lots of film in the coming days to finalize their scouting reports and grades.  It's so nice to know that the front office and head coach are spending so much time getting prepared for the draft.
  • Mayhew declined to answers questions about Albert Haynesworth.

I want to know who is within their consideration

Do you think Berry is in the conversation? Or just the DTs and Okung?

My two favorite teams are the Tigers and Brewers. Drunk tigers. That sounds about right.

They have been oddly quiet

about Berry. For some reason I have a strong feeling that they are leaning towards drafting Berry

You don't think a top 10 pick would have been invited in for a visit?

I know I thought of that too

But that’s the strategy. I’m thinking there was some super secret underground workout with Berry that NOBODY knows about lol

by DtownBallin on Apr 15, 2010 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

That would be completely unnecessary

Will people stop with this idea of being so quiet about Berry and not brining him in so nobody knows that is who they want to select? It doesn’t matter if teams know they want Berry. They have the #2 pick, and Berry isn’t going #1. They could be going on ESPN and taking out billboards in every NFL city in the country talking about how much they love Eric Berry and they still would be able to take him at #2. These conspiracy theories are ridiculous.

They should, and will, take Suh. The best player in the draft.

by Grrranderson on Apr 16, 2010 8:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I am speculating here but I think the theory is that if Detroit really likes Berry, they will want to trade down.

Since it is apparently insane to draft a Safety at # 2, salivating over Berry will potentially reduce the package that you would receive for trading out of the # 2 spot. Right? If teams thought you really wanted a guy at # 2 that would not be available later, they may have to offer you more to move out of that spot and lose that guy [Suh]. That is the reasoning ……I guess.

Overall, it fits with Mayhew’s plan of not revealing anything of Detroit’s intentions……How can he since he does not even know himself what the Lions are going to do? L O L !

I'm absolutely loving this

And yes, once again, it’s exactly what I would expect from Mayhew. Looking forward to Draft Day and the surprises that await us every year. Get ready to be shocked.

I have heard

From quite a few ex football players that are analysts now that the team that drafted them was the team that showed little to no interest in him. No interviews, phone calls, or scheduled visits.

Its called not tipping your hat

Kinda like the Browns not bringing in Sam Bradford (i think Detroit ,Clev are the only teams in the top 15 that didnt bring Bradford in for a look) I still think there is no way they can pass on Suh ,unless they trade out

The Super Secret undergound you are refering to is called his Jr. and Sr. years at Tennessee, Ten Tenn Tennessee, I game of HORRRRSSSSEEE shoes. I still want Berry but Honalulu SUH would look just as pretty to me.

remember the "little white lies" this time of year

He certaily wasn’t going to tip his hand by saying it’s between 2 players would he?

He even Mayhewed his-self

First he said when asked about the CB’s in the draft he said I will not talk about any one position we may or may not address but when asked about the RB’s it was a whole different story I exited listening to his interview more confused as ever.

The lack of CB talk worries me

I’d be a little upset if we don’t come out of this draft with a CB.

I still prefer Okung over Suh,

but either would be great

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is
