The Current Active TE's on the Lions Roster

(Cut Before Regular Season)
Dan Gronkowski
Michael Matthews
Jake Nordin
( a combined 3 catches for 30 yards)

(Keepers)
Brandon Pettigrew (30 catches for 346 yards 2 tds)
Will Heller, 7 seasons (Career 65 catches 553 yards 10 tds)
Tony Scheffler, 6 seasons (career 138 catches for 1896 yards 14 tds)

Litsen even if we take one more TE as a security for pettigrews knee.

How does a blocking te (heller) hybrid te (pettigrew) and pass catching te (scheffler) hurt the offense

Everyone’s being a negative nancy and ignoring the fact we picked up a STRONG offensive weapon helping the developing Matthew Stafford.

You liked Ernie, Great, this is a what have you done for me lately business, and the answer for Ernie was not much.

Also, I highly doubt Pettigrew cares whatsoever with the choice. No one cares about that factor when talking about acquiring other players so knock it off.

by IAmGross on Apr 19, 2010 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I think schefflers a good TE let me point that out right now

I just think drafting a TE later would have been a better alternative. Also I highly doubt gronk will be cut already. I think He will help stafford I love developing QBs have solid TEs for goal lines and check downs. I think its just a double edge sword though. We have helped are growing offense but hurt are questionable defense. This is my opinion last I heard we were all entiltled to one. Also I highly doubt pettigrew has NO opinion. when was the last time a player had someone drafted or traded at his position who is a starter not had an opinion. If pettigrew likes him that great I would just like to know what HE thinks not what he is suppose to think. I know ernie hasn’t done much of late but he is a starting linebacker we had what seemed like a great corp together than foote left now we lose Sims. Linebacker is now instead of a strong point a GIANT question mark.

I think this might be addition by subtraction for the Lions.

Obviously the Lions staff did not feel that Ernie was getting it, so by taking him out of the picture they must feel that they can really upgrade that position either internally [Levy, other?] or in the draft [Daryl Washington?].

Because of Levy’s versatility they might also look at a MLB if one falls far enough.

well grew is down and Heller is pretty good (blocking and emerging pass catchin TE ) but Schef is another huge weapon… there were TE’s in the draft but schef is proven.. with him and Grew (both short to med pass) paired along with CJ (long bomb) a scary thought… now resign R. Sims and Schef asap (lock out 2011 so there may not be a hurry)

btw were the sim’s related?

GO LIONS in 2010! the transformation starts now.. they have much to do.

by DINORDO on Apr 19, 2010 3:55 PM EDT reply actions

We get a proven pass catching tight end AND a 7th round pick

in exchange for Ernie. That’s a great deal for us since ernie obviously didn’t fit into our plans AND we need a pass catching tight end.

And NO, the Sims were not related.

It's not like that

Linehan loves to use two TE sets. Pettigrew is a very good in the short to intermediate routes, but he isn’t great at getting vertical and stretching the defense. He doesn’t have elite TE speed to strech the field. Turns out that’s exactly what Scheffler is good at. These two compliment each other extremely well for what Linehan wants to do.

You combine that with CJ providing a deep threat and Burleson providing the short/intermediate threat at WR and there so many ways Linehan can put pressure on opposing teams defenses to defend the whole field.

Schwartz talked about it when Mayhew signed Nate Burleson

http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2010/03/lions_jim_schwartz_nate_burles.html

“We have a specific role in mind for him,’’ Schwartz said of Burleson. "This is a unique offense from a standpoint of having a weapon like Calvin Johnson and a quarterback like Matt Stafford.
We need to round that out. We need to round it out with another guy who can make a play and a guy who can move the chains for us and who can make defenses pay when they want to triple coverage Calvin Johnson and try to take him out of the game. We saw that last year. This is the first step to making sure we don’t see those kinds of defenses again.’’

The first step. Now we just saw the latest step.

Listen to what Schwartz says…..firsthand, unfiltered.

scheffler was becoming a premier TE before JMD got there. im glad we can, for the most part, agree that denver got hosed.

as far as pettigrew goes, if he wants to be the #1 TE, work for it. if he cant handle this, then why would we want to continue to coddle lesser players?

Um if a guy can look good with Cutler and Orton as his QB

then Staff is going to look awesome with him and Grew. What you guys are not thinking about is this move also gives us another look that can be deadly, the 2 TE set is going to be deadly for us to not only run out of but pass out of. Look at Manning in Indy when he had his 2 TE set, the bears had the same thing going for a minute, and did pretty darn good. this trade is going to stop all of the front 4 players in our division when both guys are out there. It’s going to give Staff another weapon and help out the run game in more ways than we can think about. Oh we are going to run to the right, shift both TE’s to one side of the field and throw our FB at the same spot, hole should open up for whoever is the RB. And out of the same formation all we have to do is let both TE’s release one breaks to the middle and one on a out route and BOOM Megatron down the sideline in a 1 on 1 situation, cause the Safeties are going to have to respect both our TE’s now. I think this trade works out best for the Lions and Eagles since they needed a younger LB, I’m just curious who is going to get Eddie Royal from Denver, Minn or GB? Talk about self imploding, Denver went from being on the cusp of real good to. . . .Who the hell do we have anymore????

How many lumps you want Doc?

by davis0169 on Apr 19, 2010 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Why are a lot of people saying that we are already giving up on Grew????

I mean sure he is injured and there are reports that his recovery is going well. Grew and Scheffler are opposites in that grew is more of a complete TE while Scheffler is more of a recieving TE like Fitz but way better. They are not giving UP on Grew after one season, this is insurance against injuries that will happen over the season and now we have Grew and Scheffler as starting 2 TE set and have Heller as GREAT depth and Gronkowski to ease his way in possibily. This is all about giving Staff more weapons.

I just pray to god Follett is good enough to be a starting LB

If not, I’m gonna be upset about this move for a while. I’m really trying to have faith in Mayhew, but I’m not sure how a backup TE, a position that already has low value, can possibly be more valuable to us then a starting LB. Mayhew, PLEASE prove me wrong. Please.

by motown313 on Apr 19, 2010 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont feel like Scheffler is really a back up

I think he is more of a 1a…we will see Grew and Him on the field together a lot…plus, with 2 TEs on the field you can go with no fullback or the can double team a tough DE…a second complimentary TE is very valuable and I feel like we will really enjoy what Tony brings to the Offense.

You may be right, Cap.

And I really hope that I’m overreacting to the whole situation. I’ve felt every move Mayhew has made this offseason ended up with us being the clear cut winner, but I’ve got a bad feeling about this one. I get the feeling that finally playing behind a decent D-line (which Ernie would’ve had this year in Detroit) would allow him to excel. I’m hoping I’m wrong.

i was thinking...

the same thing.

Follett / Dizon at the MIKE (Dizon/Levy in cover situations). With his ST play, Follett has earned a serious look for our defensive team. I wonder how versatile Levy can be (and remain productive). He might be called to play both MLB/OLB.

Possible but also possible that...

…we convert Cliff Avril to OLB (he’s got the size for it and I keep hearing “He can’t hold up on the run at the DL”) while keeping Levy in the middle and hoping Petersen holds up another year.

And Levy is taking over Simms spot. Take it to the BANK! This FO knows that we are going to get Bulluck just like last year when we knew Foote was coming here prior to the draft.

I think we have to see who that #5 pick in Denver is to really judge yet.

Just like the Northcutt trade, we really will not know the true answers for several years. For all we know Sims could be even worse in their defense than in ours, Sheffler could blow himself up playing with dynamite and matches, his favorite past time that no one knew about, and Denver could draft Tom Brady, or Matt Cassells a round earlier than McDaniels was used to drafting his superstar quarterbacks in New England.

Avril at linebacker? I don't know Purdue moved him from LB to DE, he does have some experience at LB though

http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/cliff-avril?id=1330

Some teams have projected Avril as a rush end, but due to his lack of bulk and size, he could shift back to strong-side linebacker. Much like Shaun Phillips, Avril relies on his impressive foot speed and ability to shed blocks on the move to be a constant nuisance in the backfield. Since moving to defensive end two seasons ago, Avril registered 30 of his 35.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and 12.5 of his 13 sacks from the left end position.

Avril then attended Purdue University where he started 12 games at strong-side linebacker and 23 at left defensive end.

http://www.fftoolbox.com/nfl_draft/profile_display.cfm?prospect_id=1458

Cliff Avril was one of several Big Ten prospects to show up at the NFL Combine and show that he was far more athletic than anticipated. Avril ran a 4.51 40 yard dash, which was one of the fastest times by a front seven defender. He managed just 17 reps on the bench press, but Avril showed off his athleticism during the other combine events. Avril has moved up draft boards and will likely go at the end of round two or the top of round three. Cliff Avril solidified his draft status at Purdue’s pro day in West Lafayette. Avril looked good running position drills as both a defensive end and as an outside linebacker. Avril also displayed a 36 1/2 inch vertical leap. He also got a chance to display his change of direction speed in the short shuttle, finishing it in 4.31 seconds. Avril will be drafted in the mid-to-late second round.

“Cliff showed what kind of player he is by switching positions his junior year,” Purdue head coach Joe Tiller said. “He was a good linebacker and worked hard to make himself a good defensive end, and was the ultimate team guy. He also was a great leader for us, and we wish him all the best in Detroit.”

by Evilsmurf on Apr 19, 2010 9:10 PM EDT reply actions

Conclusion on Avril moving to LB.

Though I think it is feasible and would trust a move like this if the Coach decides to do it, I think we have too much invested in him at DE. Honestly he is a good player that has a lot of trade value and if he does not fit in our system, like Ernie we should trade him for someone who fits our system rather than trying to move a square peg from a round hole to a triangle hole.

by Evilsmurf on Apr 19, 2010 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Something else about our newest Lion

He is going to be our Dallas Clark, there are few if any LB’s that can cover him, and he is EVERY safety’s nightmare, the guy can flat out play, I thought he was the second best offencive player on Denvers roster for the last 2 to 3 years. We did very well in this trade.
