Lions Release Rookie Numbers, Tryout List
The Lions have released the entire roster for this weekend's rookie orientation, giving us our first look at this year's draft picks' numbers and who is trying out for the team at the minicamp. First, let's take a look at the list of participants who are either already signed to the team or were picked in last week's draft (picks are in bold).
RB Jahvid Best (44)
FB Matt Clapp (35)
WR Mike Moore (17)
WR Contrevious Parks (16)
WR Tim Toone (83)
TE Richard Dickson (46)
OT Jason Fox (70)
OG Trevor Canfield (72)
DE Willie Young (79)
DT Ndamukong Suh (90)
DT Robert Callaway (61)
LB Caleb Campbell (53)
CB Aaron Berry (40)
CB Amari Spievey (42)
LS Sam Scroggins (69)
Caleb Campbell and Trevor Canfield are the only players on this list who were not picked in this year's draft or signed as an undrafted free agent. Campbell, of course, was picked by the Lions back in 2008 and is attending his second rookie camp with the team. Canfield, who was a seventh-round pick last year, was claimed last week after being released by the Seahawks.
After the jump is the list of tryouts that will be in Allen Park for this weekend's rookie orientation. Ryan Stamper and Randy Phillips are not on the list and are the only players from the original post on UDFAs that didn't make it to camp. The reason for Stamper's absence is because, as reported by the Free Press' Nicholas Cotsonika, "there was an issue with an injury." Stamper's agent said his client "could sign with the Lions at a later date." As for Phillips, I'm not sure why he isn't on the list. It could be injury related as well, especially when you consider that Phillips specifically chose the Lions over four other teams because former Miami defensive coordinator Tim Walton is the Lions' defensive backs coach. I doubt he suddenly changed his mind and went somewhere else, so it could be an injury issue similar to Stamper's situation where he may sign with the Lions at a later date.
Players trying out at this weekend's minicamp:
QB Taylor Bennett (Louisiana Tech)
QB Donovan Porterie (New Mexico)
QB Andy Schmitt (Eastern Michigan)
RB Aaron Higdon (Charleston)
WR Jessie Hester (South Florida)
WR Mike Hyman (Long Beach C.C.)
OT Stanley Bryant (East Carolina)
OT Jordan Derosia (Saginaw Valley State)
OT Mike Hicks (Connecticut)
OG Nick Rossi (Boston College)
C Ryan Blaszczyk (Rutgers)
DL Jordan Stevens (Maine)
DE Chima Ihekwoaba (Wilfrid Laurier)
DT Demetrius Amos (Idaho State)
LB John Jacobs (Saginaw Valley State)
LB Spenser Smith (Eastern Michigan)
LB Armond Willis (Florida International)
CB Dere Hicks (Illinois)
S Jahmal Brown (Bowling Green)
S Jordan Lake (Baylor)

Toone
i guess my Toone “I” jersey is out of date now
ya
lol makes LB more interesting now i dont see zack starting hes a bit slow compared to caleb and dizon
by Daniel Simonelli on Apr 30, 2010 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions
Dizon is much too small to start.
They’re only keeping him for depth and special teams. Campbell is probably rusty too. I think Follett is best suited to start right away. Speed isn’t everything at LB, Ernie Sims proved that. It’s more about knowing your assignments and being where your supposed to be on the field.
this may sound dickish
but DAMN, people get off caleb campbell’s dick. there is NO way he is going to start, and if he does, we have a HUGE problem.
sorry, that probably was dickish.
dickdickdick.

+1
It’s not dickish ghost, it’s the truth. I’ve seen people talking about this guy like he’s gonna be a starter from day one. He may be good on special teams, but the odds of this guy ever being a full time starter in the league seems very slim.
i agree
reality is he is given a chance. whether or not he does good is up for management to decide. i would like to see the guy do good, but at the end of the day it comes down to can you do the job.
I think we had problems...
when we traded a top10 LB for a 3rd ro TE & only got a 7th ro pick & then didn’t draft a LB. I gotta think depending on how this weekend goes,, they mayB targeting Bullocks or something like that. Idk I know ES had his problems, but was always @ the top of the TA list.
Top 10?
Do you live in some sort of universe where there are only 10 NFL caliber linebackers total and Ernie Sims happens to be one of them? That’s the only reasonable explanation for that comment.
I thought Scheffler was a 2nd rd pick
In life, a man is either the hammer or the anvil. Ndamukong Suh is both
he was..
a top 10 1st round pick, which should factor into a trade, especially when they’ve had +100 tackles each season. And Sheffler was a 3rd ro pick, 3rd + 7th doesn’t + a top 10 1st ro pick. I’m not even sure what you’re talkin about, nor am not sure what Unviverse u live in.
100 tackles every year?
First, when you miss the initial tackle at the line of scrimmage, then have to chase them down 15-20 yards downfield to get the tackle it doesn’t count. Second, Sims lost his starting spot to a 3rd round rookie. Third, he only had 49 tackles last year and only has 1 INT and 2 sacks in his career. Levy had more than that in his rookie year. Sims isn’t a playmaker and never will be.
Oh and Sims never had 100 solo tackles, he relied on questionable assisted tackles to hit 100.
100 tackles
didn’t paris hilton i mean lenon have a 100 tackles? wow why did we let that “playmaker” go? number of tackles doesnt mean anything. its if the tackles are for loses and if they impact the game.
LOL
I always point to that when people act like tackles are the sole measure of a good LB. Tackles don’t mean SHIT unless they are meaningful tackles.
here's what I meant

I forgot he was injured laste year & I did say he’s had his problems ie: over-persuing plays, mis-tackles, etc. But, besides last year, he’s had solid numbers, numbers don’t lie.
Top 10 my ass
Masybe top 10 in whiffed tackles on a weekly basis but thats the only way that turd is on any top 10 list. It sure as hell isn’t for his intercetion numbers or his forced fumbles or dare I say him actually hitting the gap he is assigned to……. Wake up buddy. That 3rd string TE you are referring to was a 3rd string under that jack ass Mcdaniels, even being 3rd string he averaged more than most TE’s in the league. Get your facts straight before going on a tangent.

just curious?
who was the “top 10 LB”?
i know we traded sims and released larry foote but who was this “top 10 LB”? maybe i missed someone. was it spenser smith, rob francois, rufus alexander, or cody spencer? (man i had to dig for those names. these guys arent even in the league anymore, just some scrubs we had signed and released within the 2009-2010 season)
ghostman
Dickish! I’m just laughing about that word, not your opinion. Thanks.
hahaha. thank you.

sean
thanks for your blog. this is alot better than mlive. most of the time there are 2 pages of idiots who say FIRST FRIST FIST FRTY and so on. thanks again for a good blog. mlive should hire guys like you instead of d-bags like tom k and BVO.
I do read articles they post from other sites on there though.
That’s the only thing I use mlive for
cool
very nice area still. when they closed the kroger on manhattan blvd lets just say our area has become more urbanized. :( i already predicted that though.
Mlive...
isn’t bad, well Killer is ok, I think BVO is worthless. The community over there is terrible, I don’t even bother reading the comments.

i agree
the articles aren’t bad. some of the “breaking news” might be a day late or irrelevant, but the community does suck. i would say 90% of them don’t know football. most of them think drew stanton is a pro bowl QB and aveion cason is a 1,000 yrd rusher.
Have you ever visited the Freep.com
comment boards and see that idiot DiJiT? I like to read those because it’s just so damn funny seeing the shit he says LOL.
haha
thats too funny i read the article and then check for that morons comment. i dont know any other people who comment on there. that dude says some stupid shit. that is the kind of guy who thought maybe loper would come in an be a pro bowl guard. thats too funny.
The whole city is turning into shit lol.
The people elected into government in this city just don’t know how to not run it into the ground.
I can't wait to get the hell outta here.
As soon as I’m done with college I’m gone. Did you know they are turning the old Southwyck Mall property into government housing? There goes the neighborhood. I grew up in Maumee and I can almost see it getting worse each day.
not being racist
but thats typical it doesnt surprise me. i always thought they should do a water park or something cool since its near the freeway and near perrysburg and stuff.
My drummer lives/works out that way
I’ll be working off of Dorr and Reynolds next week

Matt Clapp!!!
You KNOW this guy is TOUGH. I had the clap once along with ghonnerea, crabs and chlymidea. They admitted me to the hospital and put me on a strict diet of pizza and pancakes. It didn’t help my afflictions, but that’s all they could fit under the door!!!!
With all the weird names NFL player have these days I was wondering
who the hell is this guy “Rookie Numbers” the Lions released today.
HAHA
It’s too bad. Rookie Numbers filled the hole at linebacker and Tryout List had some nice potential and upside.

No idea
Too early to tell, especially since I don’t know much about any of the players.

Just a note
Taylor Bennett was a QB at Georgia Tech at the same time as Calvin and threw a TD to him on his first collegiate pass.
All I know
Is I saw a picture of Willie Young next to Suh on the practice field, and good lord that kid is a beast. Might be a solid sleeper pick.

My favorite posting of the entire year !
Yahoo, let’s see what you’ve got ! Sadly, I’m 1,988 miles away from the action. I’m trusting the local area scouts will keep us tuned in. That # 46 Richard Dickson TE ( L.S.U. ) might make it. Also, one of those quarterbacks for the 4th team. I would love to see several others make it. Have fun, give it a shot and all the best !
