hmm Haynesworth and PORTIS?

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcnorth/post/_/id/11403/skins-cant-ask-for-cash-in-haynesworth-deal

This was posted by the ESPN blogs and could be a possibility?... Haynesworth AND Portis to the Lions?  I don't think picks need to be swapped if we are taking these guys.  mayhew will see to that.. hee hee

I'm a little down on Hayneworth unless you think Jim may get him back to his dominating ways .  Also if somehow Portis could redo his contract this could work out upon a trade to DET.  Maybe with new surrounding both guys will explode.   Apparently money cannot be given back to WASH to pick up Haynesworth according to the rules

Of course does this would mean Okung would be our pick in the draft if this happens?  Or do we get Suh still and drop dead weight and have one hell of a line.... Sorry for the questions but you guys know your stuff and I want all the angles answered.

Thanks POD!!!!

The Intriguing Part

of Haynesworth being on the trading block is the possibilities of how it opens the front end of the draft.

Haynesworth, and or, Portis, for a switch of firsts. Would give Skins preferential treatment to pick up Okung, and give the Lions a crack at Berry.

Upgrading the Lions defense not only in one, but TWO spots before the second round.

by IAmGross on Apr 8, 2010 10:02 AM EDT reply actions

ya buddy...

We switch spots with redskins take Berry in First and McCourty in 2nd.

by Gyorick on Apr 8, 2010 10:24 AM EDT reply actions

We would have to swap them picks. Thats too much money to pay the #2 pick

and also pay Albert and Clinton.

The trade could look like this:

Washington gets #2 pick, Julian Peterson and Cash Considerations

Detroit gets #4 pick, Albert Haynesworth and Clinton Portis

Washington could then get their “franchise” LT in Okung and Detroit can take Eric Berry to sure up the secondary

by Fish9 on Apr 8, 2010 11:44 AM EDT reply actions

They're not gonna take JP

the whole point of them getting rid of Haynesworth and Portis is to lessen the financial load of the team. Why would they take on a wildly overpaid OLB in Peterson? That would be counterproductive.

by motown313 on Apr 8, 2010 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

why are people so up on getting rid of JP it looks like?

who the hell is going to take his place? lol.

He makes way too much money

but he’s gonna stay on the team because A) nobody wants his contract, and B) as you said, we don’t have anyone to replace him. I think Landon Johnson could do a serviceable job, but he obviously won’t help out like Peterson can.

by motown313 on Apr 8, 2010 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't want the Sparty gone

But I do want us to go get a better DE, one that wont get blown up at the point of attack, so that Peterson can actually do his job, would be nice. Avril and hunter both are not the answer at that DE spot. Both make 1 play here and there then get lost in the line. As far as I’m concerned they can both be packaged up and traded away, to N.O. for Hargrove. Too bad they just signed Brown and don’t need either of them. But hey maybe with better DT play one of these 2 can actually do something. And that would free up JP to do what he does best; get after the QB on blitzes!

You have to realize

Avril has spent his two years in the NFL playing next to basically nobody. He’s shown flashes of brilliance, and deciding after two seasons that he’s not gonna be the answer is hasty. The guy has never had any real talent playing with him on the line, and now that he does I think he can take his game to another level.

by motown313 on Apr 9, 2010 1:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I know where you guys are coming from

Especially when you talk about how bad the DT’s have been in the past years, and I really badly want Avril to be the man, hell after the first 8 or 9 games in his rookie year I thought we had the next Freeney, but It just hasn’t happened yet, maybe this will be his breakout year.It should be, other wise we got Kalimba Edwards 2.0 sitting there waisting a roster spot.

Ya know I keep hearing TOO MUCH MONEY

And I think back too last years draft when Curry was being considered at the #1 overall. He was willing to take less money as long as he could sign before the draft started, why do we keep assuming that Berry wont do the same thing, Give him a descent amount of salary and a hefty Signing bonus, that way if/when the cap returns he isn’t going to count that much against us, he’s happy cause he can get some bling now, and we are all happy cause we have the best safety tandem in the league for the next decade/pending injuries.Berry is a smart mo-fo, you don’t go to college for 4 years and come out with no smarts, he knows that the position he plays isn’t one that will warrant a huge paycheck,in reference to other positions, so why do we keep assuming that he is going to demand (BIG money/Big prizes/ IIIIiiiiiIIII love it!) Anyone remember that video game? Yeah it was called SMASH TV. That would be a great nickname for our bookend Safeties if we draft him. Sunday would officially be SMASH TV, for me at least!

If we also get Albert to go up front, they could be our Buffalo gun:boom boom boom!

This is a perfect year for dealing with rookie salaries. Shouldn’t be a hard choice on whether to offer a rookie a one-year signing bonus of like $20 million up front or to spread it out over 4 year when there will likely be a cap next year where that signing bonus would count against us.

Why are people suddenly so high on Haynesworth?

He was great as a titan but hes way too old, overpaid, feels entitled, winy and only really plays in contract years. By comparison we can get Suh who is young, probably overpaid, but humble, a worker who has played well throughout college.

by GTlions on Apr 8, 2010 1:18 PM EDT reply actions

Why are people suddenly so low on Haynesworth? (who excelled for Schwartz in a 4-3)

Because some are in OMG Suh! OMG McCoy! mode, completely swept away by the tidal wave of media hype, and will reject out of hand any option that might interfere with that.

well i mean

you probably cant find another “one in a million” D tackle in the three years that we would have haynesworth and hill probably wont develop so Suh is the only answer.

by Gyorick on Apr 9, 2010 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Hes to old?

Hes 28 those are usually a players best years. I would be all for a trade for Haynesworth and Portis. That would adress to huge needs and let us focus on the secondary more.

by CHILD please on Apr 8, 2010 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

"Focus on the Secondary"

Is the new code for draft Berry which a trade to four will still not likely occur. Berry is a interesting prospect but he will not be a lion unless we can somehow make a trade to the 8-10 range. Haynesworth is not as talented as many say he is lazy and only works hard when it benefits him there is a reason that we didn’t go after him last year (don’t tell me Schwartz wouldn’t have pulled a Vanden Bosh had he really wanted him. Also you cannot claim that Portis is past his prime.

by GTlions on Apr 8, 2010 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Berry will be gone before the 5th pick is over.

If he’s sitting there at #5 KC is going to take him. The only way we can get Berry is by drafting him at #2 and most of you think that is too high( I don’t) or if we somehow trade for Albert and swich picks with Wash at #4. And I agree with you whole heartedly about Hayensworth is just now entering his PRIME years at 28.

NO WAY TO PORTIS

Wow, no way…i don’t even want to explain it…but, a guy with that many carries, who has lost more than a step…and has a shitty attitude

no thanks.

Portis has a shitty attitude??

He is a Player who is accustom to winning and is frustred with losing. So by that logic Calvin has a shitty attitude too. I guess I don’t see Clinton has really always seemed like a hard player who loves to have fun and hates nothing more that to lose.

Louis Delmas is gonna lay the MAC down on your candyass.

But Capitol gets to see the skins and hear about them wayyy more than me, so I can only take him at his word since the only WASH news I get is fron NFL live and what ever know it all is on ESPN.

they talk about Portis every day on the ESPN radio stations here

They would give him away for a 4th rounder or maybe less at this point, tons of carries and he is on his last leg, if he does well this season..IF he does well, this will certainly be his last productive year.

in haynesworth you already know want you are geting a probowl player and will macke the lions deffensive team inthe 20in the nfl . in suh you have a young dt who might be a all pro player or not . also ithink the lions will win a lot of games next year say maybee 9wins if they trade for haynesworth or if you just draft suh you many onlly win 6games beause it tackes a college player half year to learn to play in the nfl at dt. also if portis plays hard he would be a good rb if not you can allways cut him .

I’m also assuming here that you are assuming that with a trade for Albert we are going to draft Berry to fill another hole, or are you saying we trade for Albert and still take the phenom that is SUH! either way our D will look a ton better.Well at least we wont be in the 30’s in terms of overall D.

Still seems unlikely to me

I don’t see why Washington would make this trade…

you could draft berry with the 2pick of the draft or suh but ithink you could get more bang for your buck if you pickup a mlb like rolando mcclain the lions have not had great one inthe last few years . also he gives you a player who would fill a majior holein your deffensive mlb corps with a player who might be a allproplayer for us.

by kwfords on Apr 9, 2010 4:22 AM EDT reply actions

I do think if we could get Albert it would be a plus, if we could swap first rd. picks. Then that we may be able to trade down again, who knows may SF at 13 and 17 the value chart is off by a little but still reasonable enough. Noe granted we may have to give up a 3rd. to was. this year and maybe something next year put who care’s, if the the lions could pull something like this off they would come out off this with Like Evilsmurf said above Earl Thomas, Kile Wilson, and then in the second they could pick up Jahvid Best, and don’t forget Albert so that would make for a possibilty of four starters plus the other moves that have been made.

What ever it takes to get the most BANG for our picks

Is what I’m all about, if that means trading down and taking the really good players instead of the elite 4, go for it, I just know we are still going to have stop-gap players starting on opening day again this year for our Lions and the sooner we no longer have to rely on Stop-gaps to play here the sooner we are playoff bound!

keep Haynesworth from the VIKES AT ALL COSTS

if they get him with their DEF…. that would be a scary thought

GO LIONS in 2010! the transformation starts now.. they have much to do.

by DINORDO on Apr 9, 2010 3:05 PM EDT reply actions

I think he would be a good addition...

then we can draft Okung i’d give no more than the #100 pick for him unless Mayhew and Schwartz can do a performance type deal that way we can hold on to the picks we have.
