Lions Sign John Madsen, Release Kole Heckendorf
The Lions made a couple of moves yesterday involving a wide receiver and a tight end. Specifically, the Lions signed free agent tight end John Madsen and released wide receiver Kole Heckendorf.
Madsen's last NFL team was the Browns, which he played for at the end of the 2008 season after being released by the Raiders. In 2009, Madsen played for the UFL's Las Vegas Locomotives, making him the third player from that team to join the Lions. Both Jake Nordin and DeDe Dorsey played for the Locomotives as well before going on to sign deals with the Lions.
Heckendorf was brought in last October as a member of the practice squad. He was signed to the active roster after the conclusion of the season along with the rest of the practice squad.

hey, don't scoff
dede dorsey was the MVP of the UFL championship game, not to mention the star of last year’s Hard Knocks. He probably won’t make the team (he’s a poor man’s jahvid best, which I guess makes him a Jahvid PrettyGood) but he’ll be a great guy to have around. I know basically nothing about madsen or nordin, but nothing bad could actually come of this, right?
In other news, it makes me sad that somewhere in my brain, a neuron is being devoted entirely to remembering who the UFL Championship MVP was.
(And yes, I know that memory doesn’t work that way. But the point stands).
+1 on the Jahvid PrettyGood pun
My two favorite teams are the Tigers and Brewers. Drunk tigers. That sounds about right.

What Dorsey brings
is a way to practice the same plays when Best is resting on the sidelines. I think it gives us a good way to have a backup to Best with the same style as Best so we don’t end up with a very limited playbook when he is plugged in.
Show of hands
who knew Kole Heckendorf was on the team?
I actually did
know Heckendorf was on the roster. I was stumped by Robert Henderson who we traded to the Seahawks though. Nordin was in this same position last year. He played a few games last year. Not great hands and not a great blocker, but with the depth at the TE position, he won’t make the team there. He has apparently been playing FB in the OTA’s though so maybe they aren’t sold on Felton anymore.
wow
losing kole heckendorf is going to really hurt our receiving core. i thought for sure he was going to be “the eraser” that scott linehan was talking about. its sad to see him go. im sure he will be picked up VERY QUICKLY.
jk :)
Who the heck is Dorf?
Nope, wasn’t aware of it, not even after looking at the roster for the ROLB article.

I've always been a fan of John Madsen's commentary
Definitely big enough to play TE. He’s a little old though
Might be a good downfield blocker
He comes up to you and BOOM! you’re down.

Previous teams were Browns and Raiders?
guy is living the dream.

I don't know this Madsen guy
is he a blocking TE? a recieving TE? is he a special teams guy?
somone fill me in.
He is a receiving TE and likely a 2nd squad practice guy to mimic he abilities of Scheffler, saving him reps on his injured foot.
Oh he also takes snaps at FB, but all of Detroits TE's do that.
That is part of why they only carry one FB, they use the TE as depth players at FB. I might have him confused with a different TE but anyways yes he is a practice guy that likely wont make the 53 man roster.
