I respect Mike Ditka - the guy knows football. However during an interview about the recent Urlacher dispute with Sayers he dropped this gem:
"The Bears are in the North division. Right now, they have two concerns: Green Bay and Minnesota," Ditka said. "That should be their only two concerns. Unless they can control their division they're not going to win. And right now there are two teams that are playing better than they are, and that's Green Bay and Minnesota. That's not good."
I understand in recent years that the Lions haven't been competitive in the NFC North (or all of football). But last time I checked, the Lions are also in the NFC North and we have professional players as well. We have played the Bears twice a season for the past 50 years. Some we have won, some we have lost, but obviously Ditka thinks we are a non-factor. I know ripping the Lions was probably not what Ditka was getting at, but his statement speaks for itself.
Either way, if I was a actual Lion player, this is going to get posted on my locker for the rest of the season. This is the first piece of bulletin board material we have had in a long time (albeit indirect) - in the past when the Lions have been criticized they had to just take it. The 0-16 season was a reality...2 years ago, times have changed. Now with Mayhew, Schwartz and our young core of talented players, I'm not taking any crap from anybody anymore. I really hope someone from the Lions says something about this - internally or externally. Motivation can be a an extra man on the field and something we can always use.
