Lions claim WR from Redskins

Marko Mitchell. He is a big body to add to camp at 6'4''. I saw one game of his a year ago in preseason with the Redskins and he seemed to get a lot of attention from "tryout" defenses late when the starters were out but still looks huge on the field. Supposedly had an outstanding preseason a year ago and was believed to pass Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly in the depth chart before being waived. I would definitely take this little known talent rather than keep Northcutt.

big and fast. hopefully he can be coached up. don’t expect alot from a guy who was waived. you never know though. hopefully this means northcut or bryant johnson are gone soon.

could

be true. we’ll have to see what he can do when our weapons are doing all the work and he gets single coverage. Who knows maybe ha can tackle a little.

4.46 according to link above

that is good WR speed. he’s right with this year’s draft class (see below). i still think quickness, route running, and ball skills make the difference. that is why short 4.45 CBs can cover—better acceleration and quickness. i have no idea about this guy in that department.

still, at 6’4" 215, a 4.46 guy would seem hard to cover though.

compare this to this year’s combine numbers:
http://www.nfl.com/combine/top-performers

top WR performers at combine:
Ford, Jacoby 4.28
Price, Taylor 4.41
Sanders, Emmanuel 4.41
Tate, Golden 4.42
Banks, Brandon 4.43
Williams, Kyle 4.43
Easley, Marcus 4.46
Roberts, Andre 4.46
Long, Scott 4.46
Mitchell, Carlton 4.49

and CBs:
Haden ran 4.57/4.60
Ghee, Brandon 4.45
Cook, Chris 4.46
Owusu-Ansah, Akwasi 4.47
Pender, David 4.47
Jackson, Kareem 4.48
McCourty, Devin 4.48
Thomas, Kevin 4.48

Safety:
Berry ran a 4.47

Looks like good hips.

Seems to need 6 or 7 steps to get going tho. Can he really get open that much?

yeah,

why is he still a Lion? is he cheap?

by myPride on May 4, 2010 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

No, he's actually pretty expensive

That’s probably why we can’t trade him. Also, there might be a cap penalty if we cut him.

Which is why it doesn't make sense to cut him

productive or not, it doesn’t make sense to cut the guy when it’s an uncapped season. And BTW, Northcutt may have played poorly last year, but the guy has had a solid NFL career. I wouldn’t automatically assume he’ll be bad again this year.

by motown313 on May 5, 2010 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions

you cut him because we can only have 53, and if he is not one of the top 5-6 receeivers your better off going with upside youth over declining vet.

If the goal is to win the decisions are not based as much off finances. Also if your taking a salary cap hit for cutting a guy, that is acceptable to a degree. A couple mil a year will not hurt a team to have a better player on the field. Honestly, if your keeping a guy of lesser talent because of your contract then the GM (Mayhew, Lewand) have failed.

well said smurf

I’ll take my chances with Tim toone and Derrick Williams

I like the move.

I don’t think he’ll make the 53 man roster but at least we’re gaining some talented depth at the position and we’re giving the scrubs like Northcutt and B.Johnson a little competition.

The real reason...

I believe he has an outside chance of making this team but the real reason the Lions brought him in may be to help the corners, Houston and Spievey mostly, be physical and have a body at camp aside from Calvin that they can expect to go up against at some point this season. Mitchell has a huge frame and his presence should only help those young corners out. Anything more we get out of this will just be an added bonus especially if he takes away a spot from Northcutt.

by Calvin21 on May 4, 2010 10:21 PM EDT reply actions

good point

Rice in Min. Randy Moss, Marshall in Miami, Edwards in NY are all on the schedule smart move.

Cool...a stunt double for CJ

Like the idea. Wish the rest of the league could recognize the star he is.

If you look at the WR position

Starters from last year: Calvin Johnson, Bryant Johnson, Derrick Williams, Dennis Northcutt, Eric Fowler

Of this group only Calvin Johnson can be penciled in as a starter this year. I think you could give strong consideration to Bryant Johnson because he is the second best from last year and not likely to get bumped completely off the roster. Also Derrick Williams was a rookie and initially put in as the 3rd WR, I think he will get a shot to step up his game this year.

Additions to this year: Nate Burleson, Tim Toone, Brian Clark, Kole Heckendorf, Mike Moore, Marko Mitchell.

Of this group you can pencil in Nate Burleson that leaves only one spot left if we carry 5 WR. I would figure on it being both Tim Toone and Mike Moore. Both of these guys could make the roster on special teams alone and there could still be a WR spot available if so expect one of the remaining guys to fill that spot.

Guys likely to make that 5th spot if both Toone and Moore are slotted in as special teamers are Dennis Northcutt and Eric Fowler. Brian Clark, Kole Heckendorf, and Marko Mitchell will have to beat them out to prevent being cut and assigned to the practice squad.

My odds on the odd man out from last year is Eric Fowler. He rarely seen any playing time and adds nothing to special teams that I am aware of. I also think he would be easily replaceable by Mike Moore who has a better upside.

If Marko Mitchell makes the 53 man roster you can expect to see Northcut go as well. Brian Clarke and Kole Heckendorf are pretty likely to be practice squad guys.

Nice pickup

glad to see now maybe we can get rid of Northcutt and trade Bryant Johnson to the Steelers for Bryant McFadden

by SmittyJ on May 5, 2010 10:26 AM EDT reply actions

why...

would they trade McFadden when they just traded back for him…I think they realized their secondary was kind of weak when Bruce Gradkowski looked like John Elway against them. Wishful thinking though.

Pickin' up a lot of WRs...

What do you guys think the chance is that one or two of these guys can play CB?

by UndaDawg on May 5, 2010 7:34 PM EDT reply actions

Very little I suspect

by hasselhoff on May 9, 2010 8:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I hope he can be productive

but keep in mind guys that the Redskins are looking for receiving help, and if they didn’t think this guy was good enough to make their roster then we probably shouldn’t expect anything out of him. Still, I love big receivers, so I’m glad we’re taking a chance with him, and as Brandon Marshall and Marques Colston have shown us, late-round big receivers can definitely be productive in the league.
