Wednesday Notes: Recapping the Lions' Rookie Minicamp
- Ndamukong Suh was excited to get back on the football field last weekend, as was Caleb Campbell.
- The Lions' next OTA that will involve rookies is May 17 (the entire team will come together on that day). Until then, the rookies will be busy studying the playbook.
- Pittsburgh cornerback Aaron Berry, who signed with the Lions as an undrafted free agent, played extremely well during the first day of the minicamp. He had to sit out the second day with an injury, though.
- Amari Spievey didn't practice last Friday because of "some tightness in his hip flexors."
- Since injuries thinned out the numbers a bit in the secondary, Maryland defensive back Richard Taylor joined the minicamp on Saturday.
- Jason Fox practiced during the individual drills, but not the team drills.
- Jim Schwartz closed out the rookie minicamp by thanking the players for their effort.
- Taylor Bennett, a quarterback who tried out for the Lions this past weekend, was Calvin Johnson's roommate at Georgia Tech for three years.
- Lions coaches put Willie Young's locker right next to Kyle Vanden Bosch's, which should give the rookie plenty of great learning opportunities.
- Tim Toone joked about the No. 81, which he wore in college and Calvin Johnson wears for the Lions.
Rookie seventh-round draft pick Tim Toone, who wore No. 81 during his college career at Weber State, was asked if he [will] try to finagle the number away from receiver Calvin Johnson. "I don't have the money for that. I think I'll let him have it,'' Toone said, smiling. "Maybe I'll play him poker for it.''
If it was a hair contest, I think it's safe to say Toone would be taking that number away from Calvin with ease. - Jahvid Best thought Jim Schwartz's quote about watching his YouTube videos was funny.
- As you can imagine, Matthew Stafford is excited over how this offseason is playing out for the Lions.
- In case you missed it, Gunther Cunningham's "mystery linebacker" was revealed to be Utah's Koa Misi, who was selected by the Dolphins with the 40th overall pick.
- The Lions' official site has pictures from the first day of the minicamp.

Grounds keeper willie
Should really use this time with Kyle it will benifit him greatly. I think Schwartz probably drafted him with the idea that Kyle will take him under his wing. Vandenbosch is no spring chicken maybe in a few years Willie could be his replacment.
Louis Delmas is gonna lay the MAC down on your candyass.

Love Staff's manner of speaking in that article
"It’s a fun night for those guys. I got to do it last year. We were excited to have them. I was really excited and really pleased with the draft."
Guy is in command of his team. Gotta love it.
Also, I’m about 85% sure I saw Calvin Johnson at my work today.
When they aren't dressed auspiciously
not to mention where I live is near a lot of Detroit sports team players homes… If it wasn’t him (I checked on the Lions’ website to try and confirm), it had to be another Detroit player.
Hey, you got a job
The only way I would recognize calvin is if he had his helmet on

Yeah, what's funny
is that I couldn’t make ends meet in Atlanta, so I moved back to Detroit and now I have two jobs… Ironic, isn’t it?
Well, you were in Acworth
If you weren’t sleeping with your sister at a Klan rally you probably didn’t have the connections to get a job.
The sister-f#cking portion of the Klan rallies is where all the networking happens in north Georgia.
I guess I was oblivious
the absurdly open manner in which people were racist there did, however, put me off slightly.
So I gotta say it
If Gunny was saying that he sees something in that LB that no one else sees and the guy goes in the 2nd, then other people saw it. In fact, the cowgirls had him high on their boards as well, so multiple other people saw it. So, maybe our scouts aren’t getting the hiddne gems as much as we would like to think.
I know what you're saying, but...

Maybe Gunny just has as good of talent recognization skills as the Cowboys and Dolphins… not sure that’s a bad thing either
Dude, you could totally make a million with that idea!
Seriously, I think this was a case of us thinking the FO is now blessed with magic powers. I mean people were pointing to guys who went in the 5th or 6th and even some undrafted guys as the person he to which was referring. Not one of us (me included) thought to look in the second round.
I’m not saying Gunny is bad or our FO is not shitting gold; I am just saying that we need to realize that after having the functionally retarded running things for the past decade having someone who is merely competent at their job will seem like we have someone shitting gold.
Warning: if you experience shitting gold please contact your doctor immediately.
I said Koa Misi a few times but mainly because when you look at what we want in a 4-3 OLB
and the scouting reports, he was about the best fit for us. I mentioned Jerry Hughs and Donald Butler as possible guys to work into our system but they went pretty high too. For us the OLB is one of the most skilled requirements for a player. They have to have decent size, around 250. lbs is the goal, they have to be able to cover for a short distance, blitz, and shed blocks to run support on top of being good tacklers. For us its like the OLB’s are the do everything guys and its rare to find those coming out of college. I kept getting frusterated as people would suggest guys like Spoon. There is no telling really, he could develop into an amazing LB for us but he had a similar tool set as Ernie SIms, which is great in a traditional 4-3 but not our brand of a 4-3. Spoon was a speedy guy that was a good tackler and good blitzer. That is tops on some LB lists but we need more than that, namely the block shedding and coverage skills. I think he could be a decent cover LB he has the tools for it, but the block shedding, at his size in the NFL would be a chore and that is probably the most important tool along with the coverage for our LB’s. Anyways Misi was the only guy who could do it all, kind of the jack of all trades, and a Samoan too! Can’t go wrong there.
I'd be more excited if we had a decent secondary.
Here’s Rotoworld’s latest post on Chris Houston:
Chris Houston is likely the Lions’ No. 1 corner, according to beat writer John Niyo.
The Lions gave Atlanta a sixth-round pick and a conditional seventh-rounder in exchange for their new top corner. Houston fell out of favor with the Falcons and you can be sure he’ll be attacked consistently on Sundays. Defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham will have to work some magic to make this secondary respectable.
We should look into Ken Hamlin, to say the least.
